Driving to work this morning, down 112th in Bellevue, I came up on a 987 that had its brake lights on the entire way (a couple of miles). At first I thought maybe it was a malfunction, but when I got next to the driver, it looked more like just someone riding the brakes. It was an older man or woman, I really could not tell, driving hunched over the wheel with a death grip. 30 mph, light traffby garyinseattle - Main Forum
My cars were both same generation, 05 987 and 07 997, and close in mileage, both about 29K. I hate to say it, but I view the Boxster as a sports car, although quickly moving "up" the market, and the 911 being a high performance GT. My previous 911 was a 90 C-4 coupe that I sold about 15 years ago. The 911 has changed a lot since then.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
On top of the bump in hp, the real treat is going to 3.8 liters. Growing up on muscle cars there were lot's of sayings like "no replacement for displacement", that are still true today. However, I still really do miss the smaller and lighter 987. You can really feel that extra 10% in weight, and it even shows up in the sounds the car makes going over bumps. To answer the other question, yesby garyinseattle - Main Forum
Bruce, your experience sounds very similar to mine. I recently traded from a base 987, to a 997 S Cab. Very different experiences, with the 987 being the better all-around car, but the 997 s being just a flat-out hoot when you are feeling like nailing the throttle, breaking the rear end loose, and hearing that incredible sound.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I recently changed from a 987 to 997s Cab. I find that I don't get nearly as many comments on the 911 as I did on the Boxster. Several negative looks in the 911, and I almost think that part of it is that the Boxster seems to be a more approachable car for many people, while the 911 may have a somewhat stereotype of being driven by a D-bag. On the positive side, Porsche owners seem to reallyby garyinseattle - Main Forum
Thanks for the suggestions and the past 5 years of advise. Since so much of this board is dedicated to P cars in general, I plan to check back on a regular basis.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
After months, maybe even years, I finally pulled the trigger and traded my Boxster: For a 997 S: I will post thoughts after I put a few more miles on it. Initial thoughts are that you cannot overstate the amount of additional torque you get from the 3.8 liter motor. I have already found myself sideways in a corner on my favorite on-ramp. Interior is much more upscale, mine has the fullby garyinseattle - Main Forum
The good news is that it turned out to be just an oil plug gasket issue. The dealer fixed it, no charge. The bad news is that I really want an excuse to upgrade to a new P car. I can't justify it, having just purchased new PS2's, and have had the 30K major service. I guess I will just have to get by with more of the same permagrin.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I took my car (05 Boxster) in for service to the dealer in Bellevue about a month ago. Had the major service completed, at a cost of about $1K. Car has 29K miles on it. I noticed a few drops of fluid on my garage floor about two weeks after that. Never had any fluid leak on this car at all. I assumed it was maybe just some excess oil from the change, so I wiped it up. However, I now seeby garyinseattle - Main Forum
I am still thinking about replacing my 05 base Boxster. One of the many options I am considering is a new Boxster when they come out. I was always thinking I would get an S the next time, but have to admit that except for the odd on-ramp, I rarely have my foot in it. One of my favorite things about the Boxster is the low weight and center of gravity. I could see how the extra weight of the Sby garyinseattle - Main Forum
What I meant by "add another car to my garage", is that I have space for more cars, and could, for the $45K difference, add an 04-05 911 coupe, and keep the Boxster. I also could add something fun like a mid-60's corvette convertible. I have owned 911's before, and agree they are very different, that wold be the reason for owning both Box and 911.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
Just looked up the trade-in value of my 05 Boxster. 29K miles, S wheels, premium audio and a few other options. In excellent condition, which I feel mine should qualify, trade-in is only $19.5K. Given that I really like the new Boxster, really have the bug for something different, and that a reasonably equipped S model is $65K, the difference will be $45K. For that amount of money, I couldby garyinseattle - Main Forum
Great video link. I know the opinions on this board are mixed, but I gotta say that I like almost everything about this new car. Like the 911, the Boxster is going upscale. For me, this is perfect, since it is my primary driver. I don't want the much heavier 911, since I mostly drive in city traffic, but I do miss some of the luxury touches. This is just the middle ground I have been lookingby garyinseattle - Main Forum
Thanks Guenter, exactly what I was looking for. Anyone have any experience with Center mount versus angled mount for 05 or newer Boxster?by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I know there have been many posts on i-pod interfaces, but I am interested in just a simple holder for my i-phone for use in an 05 base Boxster. I use it for navigation, and can't find a good place to attach it. There has to be a simple holder that works well in the Boxster. I don't care about charging or plugging it into my radio, just a holder. Any suggestions?by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I have to admit that up until 7-8 years ago, I bought everything through Tire Rack, especially when I lived in smaller cities. Now, it seems that the local tire dealers in Seattle are matching the TR price. Discount Tires in Bellevue always come within a couple of bucks of the TR price. I have 3 cars, and buy a set every year for one of them. At times, DT actually pulls up the TR pricing, telby garyinseattle - Main Forum
Used the opportunity to get in two rounds of golf, and also found the time to clean up the Boxster.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I was interested in hearing from members that have both. That is an option financially, and garage space wise, but the pragmatic side of me says I don't need both for the limited amount of driving I do.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I have been the happy owner of a base 05 Boxster for the past 4 years. It is one of 3 cars in my household, and is my daily driver. My round trip daily commute was 35 miles, but I moved 2 years ago, and now it is only 5 miles. I drive to work, and the golf club, so I am never in the car more than 10 minutes at a time, and rarely get above 45 mph. Total annual miles are now about 3K. I love tby garyinseattle - Main Forum
ALex, I live in Bellevue, which dealer did you buy from? I assume it is Park Place or Barrier. don't recall seeing the cobalt blue in inventory.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I put the Conti Extreme DWS on my daughters MB C-230. The previous tires were PS2's. I did not really notice a big reduction in handling, like I thought I would, and they worked reasonably well in the one light snow we had this winter in Seattle. They also seem to be a little more smooth and quiet. I have PS2s, N on my 05 base Boxster, and can tell you that they work great, and I personally wby garyinseattle - Main Forum
I replaced Bridgestones with PS-2 N rated about a year ago on my 05 base Boxster. Very noticeable improvement in handling, vibration and noise. I would buy again, even with the premium.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I had a Kawasaki 750 for about two years when I was in college. It was scary fast, would lift the front tire off the ground in 1st if you twisted the throttle too hard. It also would make my arms go numb after about 60 minutes of riding if I didn't take a break.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
Agree that it is not a cost savings idea to buy new. However, I would bet that the total cost of ownership over a 5 year period is closer than you think when you add in repairs and depreciation. That being said, let's face it, we don't buy P-cars just for transportation, and there is an element of fun involved with buy, driving and owning a new and different car. So, it is all part of the costby garyinseattle - Main Forum
Couldn't agree more. When I was doing more highway driving, I really enjoyed my 911 C-4. More stable at speed. Now that I am doing all city driving, the Boxster (05 Base), is the perfect car. Small and light, just more fun to drive.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I installed my antenna for Sirus under one of the plastic covers that sits at the base of the passenger side of the front windshield (under the front hood). Reception was pretty good, and compared favorably to when I had it mounted on the outside of the rear clamshell. BTW, I had a portable head unit that I transferred between two cars. It was all not worth it however, since I only bought thby garyinseattle - Main Forum
Switched from PS2's on my daughters MB C-230, to Conti DWS. Agree the summer performance suffered a little, but the gain in winter performance has been fantastic. Drove the car once in light snow, and was very pleasantly surprised at the amount of traction.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
The great thing about being a "car guy", is that you can enjoy different cars for different purposes. I love my 05 Boxster, but also enjoy driving the family 07 MDX. Very different, but both good in their own right. Heck, I even enjoy my daughters 05 C-230 in certain situations. If there were only one choice, we would all be driving Civic's. BTW, why is Boxster not on the spell check?by garyinseattle - Main Forum
I agree with you on the side vents looking a little out of place on the 987's. I called Eric at Bumper Plugs and replaced mine with body color (black) Cayman vents. They blend in much better.by garyinseattle - Main Forum
Despite all the quantitive analysis, go with what moves you. You will have the car for a long period of time, and the 986's already look a little "dated" when compared to newer cars (my impression, the 986 is more curvy, less angular than the 987, looks like an early 00 car). In 5 years, that will be even more of an issue for you. I personally like the 986, and drove a few prior to buying my 0by garyinseattle - Main Forum
