I had the same problem last week Tuesday - I lowered the top but only one side lowered and the other side stayed as is. The metal cover was twisted at an acute angle when I heard the electric motor start to strain with the uneven tension. I was stuck with the top half up and half down and 120km from my nearest Porsche OPC. The diagnosis over the phone the next day was a snapped cable, but the biby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
Many thanks Mike for your valued contribution to all the Porsche sites, both in the US and the UK. My wife is in the same situation as yours and sometimes you have to correspond to the fact that we are all getting a little older and plans change.... I'm sorry to say it, but the Ferrari makes our Boxsters look very frumpish. Mind you, they should, considering the cost!!! I'll duck for cover now, but I'll stand by my observation.....by Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
The minimum voltage for a fully charged good condition battery should be in the region of 12.6 v. A 75% discharged battery usually displays 12.4 v. A 50% discharged battery will display 12.2 v. Fully discharged = ~ 12 v. Anything less should be looked upon as suspect....by Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
Up untill around 7-8 years ago (if I remember correctly), the Northern Territory of Australia did not have any speed limit - unlike everywhere else in Oz. But the carnage of cars, motorcycles and trucks hitting the local wildlife (water buffalo, cattle and kangaroos) made the government change the limit to 130 kmh (80 mph). The roads out there in the outback are really desolate, so if you hit aby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
I'm replacing my fluid this week - the original Porsche gearbox oil was replaced by the OPC in 2008 (@ 40,000 miles on my request) when I purchased the car - but then I found out that they use Mobil gearbox oil, not the specified Porsche stuff..... I can't buy the genuine Porsche oil here in Australia apart from @ the OPC, and its too expensive postage wise (because of weight) from the US - so Iby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
Are you serious......what do you think will happen to that hard piece of plastic (assuming it is only one piece) when it gets chewed up by the cams and chain ?? Sure it "may" lodge somewhere safe but.... No way I would leave it in there - the potential consequences are too serious to contemplate. Sounds like the cam box (valve cover) needs to be removed to access the broken piece(s). Even if youby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum

The alternator on manual Boxsters has a clutch system mounted inside the pulley. Tip Boxsters have a direct mounted pulley. Last year I was experiencing a low rumbling noise at idle rpm. After removing the belt and replacing the bearings in the idler and tensioner pulleys the noise was still there - so I removed the alternator and discovered the "clutch" was seized. Some of the Porsche parts suppliers are selling the genuine ROW suspension kits for about $1200 IIRC. The kits come with 4 new shocks, springs and sway bars (for both front and rear), all in one box. Sounds like a good deal to me as you can guarantee the quality and the correct fitting....by Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
Once you have removed the inspection cover, I would inspect all the idler pulleys (3 off), ancilliaries (A/C, alternator / water pump / power steering pump) and belt to see if there is anything obvious. If all looks OK, run the engine with the belt still attached to see if you can identify where the noise is coming from. If that proves fruitless, remove the belt (24mm spanner) and spin each pullby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
When I checked my bearing for oil penetration, I removed one seal - it easily flips out - and put the open side down on the paper. No seepage was evident after leaving overnight and what appeared to be a little grease was causing the bearings still to drag when rotating it by hand. I'm coming from a different angle, where in Australia a 10 year old 986 S is worth $40,000 and is still worth keeping - as apposed to the "do I part it out" syndrome prevalent in the US and UK.... As a purely selfish financial exercise, I replaced my IMS bearing (together with the clutch and RMS) at 46,000 miles last September. I installed the LN bearing assembly and when I removed one side of tby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum

I would replace both idlers #3 & #8 AND the tensioner #7. The idlers #3 & 8 just unbolt but tensioner #7 tequires an odd size 15mm spanner behind the tensioner to remove. If one bearing has gone, the others are not far behind......by Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
I replaced my 2001 S IMS bearing assembly last September with 47,000 miles on the odo, and, like JiminAZ, the original bearing was in good condition. But with Boxster prices in the US now approaching the low end of $10,000, its a hard call to put 30% of the cars value on a preventative maintenance bearing upgrade for no performance or visual gains.... Thanks for the kind words - sorry I didn't reply earlier but I've only just got back from flooded out Brisbane and read your message - most places don't have electricity or phones as the microwave towers have dropped out. Grant - Wayne indicates in his preamble that his book is really not a complete stand alone item and should be read as an addition with the Bentleys Manual, Porsche handbooks, etc. I was reading up on my next project (water pump replacement) and it starts by saying to pull off the radiator hose - nothing about draining the system. So you have to refer back to a couple of previous chapters regardingby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum
Well, they are dropping prices here in Australia by..... damn all. Base Boxster is $114,950 which with the $A on parity with the $US, would break your American & Canadian hearts. The motorway speed limits in the UK is 70mph, though most cars in the fast lane cruise around the 80-90 mph and don't seem to have a problem with the local constabulary..... The biggest problem there is the volume of traffic - you have a very small island with over 60 million people and probably the same number of vehicles - I'm pretty sure its the most heavily vehicle populated area in the worldby Stephen Tinker in Australia..... - Main Forum

Well its Christmas morning here on the Eastern seaboard of Australia, 28 deg C, humidity @ 85%, pouring with rain and a cyclone brewing off the coast in Northern Queensland.... Mike.. I can't answer your suspension / alignment questions, but I installed the Flat6 underdrive pulley about 5,000 miles ago and can't be happier. The installation is relatively painless, the HP increase is certainly felt, but the two biggest improvements are an increase in torque at 3000-5000rpm and a quieter engine due to the reduced rpm of the ancilliaries behind your ears.
