Thanks all for your responses. Pedro - the 1/4" tear in the roof somehow did not puncture entirely through the fabric and the drains were clear (ish), so there was no water in the car at all, thankfully. Did a video chat with the adjuster today (since they can't do in person due to COVID) and showed him all the scrapes and dents, etc. They did an estimate for repairs over $5000, and are sendingby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Guy at the shop called to say that he really wasn't interested in working on the Boxster. No worries, plenty of choices. So, I drove the car the 100 yds back to my work and parked it and hitched a ride home with a co-worker. That night, along comes Hurricane Isaias (sp?) right over top of us. The next morning I got a flood of texts and pics from my co-workers that the Boxster is buried uby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Aha - got it. Thanks for the clarification! When I took the car in, the mechanic did look at the brake fluid reservoir and it was clearly still full, so he said he didn't think there was a brake fluid leak.by boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Guys - Just curious, and please forgive my ignorance - but, how does the clutch slave interact with the braking system? Seems like those would be two completely separate systems in the car. Thanks! Amyby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Thank you Pedro and Frogster - I relayed the message to check the clutch slave to the mechanic, and will see what he says. I appreciate the comments and will keep you posted. Amyby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Hi guys - I'm hoping you can give me a bit of advice on how best to proceed. I have a 1999 986 with a scroch over 110,000 mi. I don't drive it frequently - maybe, once or twice a month (more in any season but the summer when it's just too damn hot.). Anyhow, Thursday I'm heading back to work from lunch and my break wear sensor light comes on. I was moving at the time and not touching the brakby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Hi guys - So, after much gnashing of teeth, scraped knuckles, many socket sets and even a torque wrench, I was able to retreive the lock and immobilizer unit to ship off to get new keys made and programmed. Yah, like you I was a bit of a skeptic, but willing to give it try as much much less $$$ than any dealership I spoke with - not to mention, not having to have the car towed a minimum of 90 miby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Thanks Pedro and Boxsterra - No, pulling the lock is indeed not trivial but not major surgery either. The lock is fiddly but not difficult. The main issue is that you mostly can't see what you're doing and have to work by feel. But, that said the lock is now safely out and I'm working on getting the seat out to pull the alarm/immobilizer unit. Of course, seat bolt #4 is stuck like a bugger anby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Thank you much Pedro! After much Googling (the magic string was "lost Porsche keys" ), I found a place in UT where you can ship out your door lock and alarm unit and they can cut keys and reprogram the alarm unit, then you re-install everything. It's well after hours now, but I will call the company tomorrow, but they seem legit and do transponder/key work on Saab, Porsche, etc. I'll reporby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Hi guys - I'm hoping you can help a sistah out. Before I even ask the question, yes, I have searched here, there and everywhere on the 'net and am more confused than ever about replacement keys. My issue is, somehow the one and only key to '99 986 is gone gone (bought used about 4 yrs ago and only had one key). I've looked everywhere. Seems like opinions on the boards range from, "order partsby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Hi Clam - I can help you with this one, as I've just done the fix. Basically, the weight of the airbag is supported by four rubber septa (I'm sure there's a better word for this...) with a metal sleeve in the middle all supported by a metal frame. Over time the rubber septa degrade/split/fail allowing the frame to hit the horn contacts and giving you the beeps every time you hit a bump (veryby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
I appreciate your kind words. Luckily, I'm just the diagnostician/Google-foo-er and parts buyer, and not the actual mechanic. My demo skills are top notch. My get-it-back-together skill.....ummmm...notsomuch. Today was a good day though. It was 75 and sunny. Perfect top-down weather. (I should say too as a caveat to all my grousing... so far this car has been completely reliable and runsby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
Hello Pedro's Board and former PPBB'ers! Very long time visitor but have never posted. I have a '99 986 that is pretty much straight stock- arctic silver, blue top and interior. Not a daily driver, except when the weather is nice, and currently has 87K miles. Bought the car off the 'Bay about 3.5 years ago, and have had, mostly, permagrin ever since. And have very much enjoyed the lively disby boehmaj986 - Main Forum
