Again, not to defend any theory. We dont know. But the theory goes like this: 1. while sealed, all is well 2. the seal begins to fail, and the grease migrates out 3. oil cannot easily enter to replace it 4. seal further deteriorates 5. now tow conditions can exist - hgih pressure, high splash, constant use..... and the reverse 6. in the excellence article, and from track blabber, it seems trackeby grant - Main Forum
unlike the factory unit, it (the LN unit) is designed to catch engine splash oil for constant lubrication. The factory one seals oil out until it is badly failed, then still presents a small catch window. The LN one also has far higher bearing (balls) surface area, and the bearings are nade out of extremely hard (lower wear, lower heat) ball bearings. We don't know if it will work, but the ideaby grant - Main Forum
rotors every 2-3 sets of pads (we track rats do a lot of brakes) Clean the retaining pin and lubricate it At minimum bleed when i do brakes, of coruse change fluid annually (track) or 2 years (normal) I ditch the sensors and repalced them with shorting plugs. I can see when pads wear better than some damn wire. Grantby grant - Main Forum
First, the pads do wear at slightly different rates. one may be more worn. But i doubt that's it. Second, the sensors are embedded in the pads. Far enough in to give you lots of safe time to repalce them. So porsche INTENDED there to be lots of life left. Its normal. After my pad light went on at monticello i got nearly 1/2 track day in AND drove home. Had pads and stuff at the track, just iby grant - Main Forum
Then torsens are awesome. I've had them in a procession of Audis since they were introduced in 1991. I do drive my open diff 2.7 with snows in snow, but only if i get caught (else i'm in the aforementioned audi with snows - aka tank). So i've never driven at higher speeds in the white stuff. That said, it was amazingly good int he few snows i did get caught in, albeit partly due to low expectatby grant - Main Forum
That range is reasonable ( note that one shop publishes MUCH higher prices). It also appears that the M96 motor, while maligned, is actually a very logn-lasting motor with a couple serious faults The worst is the IMS. For track junkies, the fact that it can suck air on hard turns is an issue - for most its a non-issue Not much else really - they tend to run 200k aside from those things. even dby grant - Main Forum

look at the cam timing deviation for both cams. timing changes shoudl be constant. Ideally lay the two over each other or subtract one from the other leaving the diff. i was thinking of doing that on mine, just as another clue of how far i could delay the job.... I forgot about that. Of course, IMS is only one reason you could get timing deviation. Grantby grant - Main Forum
i don't know any way to tell without pulling it. Neither does Charles, or so he says. yes, a leak is a substantial clue. How did your old IMS bearing look? Do you have pics? (I'll post mine around Christmas) Grantby grant - Main Forum
the reality is that under the majority of circumstances, these cars wont spin wheels. Even on a dry, clean track, my (admittedly mighty 2.7) will rarely spin wheels - even on such spin-encouraging places as exiting Oak Tree, still turning right, in 2nd, at full throttle ( then again, i'm ALWAYS under full throttle!). So you spin a little on dirt and gravel. Big whoop. Sometimes Big Whoop! in aby grant - Main Forum

i realize that money's money, btu for $3k or less, you have a virtually now motor, with 200 cc additional to boot. Happy Boxstering! Grantby grant - Main Forum
My car (04, 2.7 37k, many track days) has been growing increasingly more coarse around 3k too. I worry that it might be MY IMS. I have the kit,and plan to put it in over the holidays when things get quiet. For the record, i also put new spark plugs in ( the first in nearly 6 years and 37k) and they made a substantial improvement in smoothness, as well as perceived power and general willingnessby grant - Main Forum
