Very sad loss for music lovers. I have to say it's my favorite option on my 981.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
It all began with six cruel little words. Six words that Ferdinand Piëch, the chairman of the Volkswagen Group, one of Germany's largest and best-known companies, had told in the hopes of undermining one of his most high-profile colleagues, VW CEO Martin Winterkorn. Piëch had skewered many men with his words over the course of his career -- but in this case, he got far more than he had bargaiby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
I've seen spy photos of a 981 Boxster Spyder, so there may be one last normally aspirated hurrah past the GTS. Like the GT4, it'll be tough to get, so as Guenter & Walter say, better get one before it's too late. Kevin the Slow can vouch for mine. I have a little seat time in a 987 Boxster Spyder and a fair amount in a Cayman R. The biggest difference to me is the hydraulic steering is suby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
Always off. First thing I did on delivery, turn key to On, turn off AutoStop, then started car. Haven't touched it since.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
No, since I made sure I bought mine before the shoe dropped. One of the best articles I've seen on the topic:by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
You probably already saw it, but if not, check out page 73 of the December Panorama. Freeman's 1972 911T at sunset, in one of your favorite colors. I wish they'd make a poster of that shot -- I'd frame it and hang it. Oh, the article is superb, too.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum

Quotekmmcdonald Talking to the Porsche salesperson, there is not much more time to order a 2014 S. He says that the 2015's will be the same, will probably cost 2-4% more, and that my tradein (2003 S) will be worth less if I wait. Is this good advice? thanks Keith I wouldn't be in a rush, though as Guenter mentioned, it's unlikely it'll be a '14 unless he's got an allocation to fill before theby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
Yes, the options can be picked on an S. However, some people think that the GTS gets special chassis tuning that makes it more than the some of its parts. At least the 997 GTS, for example, in Andrew Frankel and Pete Stout's reviews. The power bump would have to be imperceptible.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum

DQ'd for Guenter, no manual transmission. -- I glance to my right at the guy driving the Volt and do a double take -- why is he grinning and videoing the Porsche 918 with his iPhone like that? Ah, yes. Of course. The 918 I'm in is whispering along in its EV mode right now, which makes he and I sort of like EV buddies! QuoteRoger987 I've been told by Porsche roadside assistance (FWIW) that the Boxster's battery does not charge while the car idles. My experience is consistent with that. This sounds right based on what's in the Service Technik book. Charging occurs when under braking, etc., as to maximize efficiency.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
I thought it was supposed to be done at the same time as the brakes? I don't know the interval for certain on a 987. The factory brake fluid interval, I'm pretty sure, is every 2 years. Jimby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
The 997TT didn't have any sound fans, it had a big, undistinguished vacuum cleaner type woosh. It's tough to get an exhaust note sound good when it's been chopped up by the turbo impeller. I realize Porsche is stuck between very unfriendly motoring regulations and demanding customers. I don't know what percentage of their customers are enthusiast hard core like us, but I don't see me spendingby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
I was fortunate enough to be standing in the Road America pits (behind the wall0 when the Muscle Milk Spyder was fired up. The crew laughed at me for plugging my ears, but it was LOUD. Great. but LOUD. I was standing maybe 2 feet from it, and the left exhaust was flapping my pant legs.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum

In the owners pack for the 2014, there's a sheet specifically recommending the use of a battery maintainer (the Porsche-branded version of a CTEK 3300). Battery maintainers are far more particular about state of charge than the car itself. After returning from the Keystone Parade, with three stops for gas and food, almost 900 miles, the battery maintainer though the battery still needed a top-oby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
Any time a major change comes, reliability issues are likely to increase. There's also the issue of heat soak, perhaps curtailing power in high ambient temperatures. Plus mid-engined cars can have issues with engine compartment temperature management. There's lots of fuss over the 991GT3 fires, but as you may recall, the F458 had a bunch early on, because they got hot enough to melt the glby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
It reminds me of the 2014 Formula 1 engine debacle, with 1.6L V6 turbos that sound like an Accord with a fart-can muffler. Fans and venues up in arms. Welcome to the CAFE/CO2 future. Low revving, small displacement engines with turbos and batteries for catch-up. A lot like 1974, when engines were choked off. Everyone loves 1973 911s, 1974, not so much. The way it was phrased I thought read (who knows with translation) up to 395 HP. "Up to" being key. That would be at the end of the 981.2's life span in a Cayman R, methinks. One thing is for sure, the 981s are not going to be allowed to generate numbers as good as the base Carreras. They will be kept in line in MSRP order. So until the base Carrera gets faster, neither will the 981s. I cby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
The Service Technik book says the starter will tolerate the duty cycles and the battery is now an Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) type to better cope. From the way its phrased it makes me think the battery is going to have the shortened life. In my case, the Autostart disable button was the first thing pushed in the dealership, and it'll never be back on. If it helps Porsche with an EPA credit, butby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
I am surprised nobody has mentioned German watches. Yes, the Swiss are more famous, but the Germans have a tradition, too. Starting at the modest level, Stowa has a number of handsome pilot-type (as in Luftfwaffe) watches. Pardon the long-winded URL: Moving up, we have Sinn of Frankfurt. I had a question on a recent oil test report, so I called the lab. As long as I had the lab tech on the phone, I asked a bunch of general questions that I'd been pondering. There may be no area in the automotive world as varied as oil advice. Porsche AG has a list of approved oils. In the U.S., most dealers and owners use Mobil 1, and it's factory fill. Some people think this list is a goodby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
I asked at the factory why the build-up with DFI? It's because they inject fuel into the cylinder with the exhaust value open to pre-heat the cats to improve the cold cycle emissions. So the build-up is left over from that.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
They don't go into detail on the coating. I assume it's something to keep the carbon buildup down. I should have said CO rather than CO2, BTW.by Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
There are a bunch of priorities in the temp cycle, and the baseline temps are different for the 2.7 vs. the 3.4. The cabin gets first priority, if it's calling for heat. They list the thermal management as contributing 2% to the efficiency. As for the auto-start/stop, I get the EPA credit they get for putting it on, but the first thing I do after starting a Porsche so equipped is to push the dby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
I was poking around Suncoast's website awhile back, and after looking at what I wanted, I stumbled into an interesting sounding book on the 981. It's called "Service Information Technik: 2013 Service Introduction." They have the cover and one page on their site. Always being a sucker for another book, I ordered one. I found it really interesting, and learned a bunch of things. If you likedby Jim in Iowa - Main Forum
The 981 has a number of exterior black plastic pieces, the rear diffuser, the side intakes, the under door mirror area, and the nose slats and center section which used to duct to the center radiator. While these black plastic pieces look good when new, as the plasticiser cooks out, the sun works on them, they eventually turn dark grey, then a bleached-looking middle gray.
