Gotta love Porsche for sweating the details. My favorite 'detail' on my 986 is the little half-moon cutout on the bottom of the drivers side door strip that allows you to run a charger wire under the door without overly compressing the weather seal.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Coolant tank? Just did mine last year on my '01S after I noticed some mystery coolant loss. You are definitely 'in the window' for an age-related replacement...by jlegelis - Main Forum
In case you haven't noticed used Porsche's are going for 25K over sticker (eg ). Like housing prices I just don't 'get it', perhaps prices will come back to 'normal' at some point. In the meantime I'm sure dealers are quite happy to sell new GT3's at 50k ADM (additional dealer markup) and used 911s rather than the hassle of ordering a new Panamera for some paltry markup. YMMV.by jlegelis - Main Forum
AOS & Coolant tank for sure (if they've not already been done). Just did both last year on my 01 986S. Tank was already leaking under pressure, and figured AOS was only a matter of time. I did them both myself: AOS was pretty simple provided you have the spring clamp removal tool extender. Coolant tank was a PITA despite studying lots of videos. Probably could do in 1/3 of the time noby jlegelis - Main Forum

No cats? Yeah you can expect CELs for all time regardless of the condition of the O2 sensors...by jlegelis - Main Forum
The internet is your friend... They all look to be O2 sensor codes. I assume you have Fabspeed sport cats, so consider replacing O2 sensors per the diagnostic. Considering the age of the car you may also want to replace the MAF which is considered a wear item and will cause wonky issues. While ur in there I'd strongly recommend the coolant tank and AOS if they are original (you don't mentionby jlegelis - Main Forum
Don't get me wrong, I adore by 986 S MT, and have been double clutching and rev matching with the best of them since my 'no synchro' Alfa Spider days. For me what's seductive is the PDK's versatility: I life in suburban Boston where gridlock is a way of life - so much so that I take my 'other'/lesser car on weekends or choose my departure times based on my gear box just to avoid traffic. The PDKby jlegelis - Main Forum
Driving MT's for 40 years, and a 986 S MT since 2002. Turo'd a base 300HP 2.0T 718 PDK in Miami last weekend and was *blown away* how great it was. Sure the engine note was farty, but the engine was cheeky and eager, and the PDK was a revelation: Miami traffic? NP!. Exit ramp with blindingly quick downshifts? Piece of cake? Left-foot braked launch control? Bring it. Seriously thinking abouby jlegelis - Main Forum
I was at the dealer yesterday test driving a new Macan for my wife and was amazed to discover a 'market adjustment' applied to... almost everything in stock: $2k on 718 Boxster S, $5k on Macans, $40k on a Targa! Sure, I get it's just 'supply and demand' / 'whatever the market will bear' but I'm amazed Porsche contracts don't prohibit such brazen and shameless profiteering, especially from a branby jlegelis - Main Forum
Guessing the % of ppl that change their own oil is even less than those that shift their own gears. In other words, to capture the revenue stream today's business model assumes dealers will conduct oil changes with their purpose built equipment, so manufacturers have little / any incentive to support home mechanics IMHO. In any case 'oil changes' and 'gas stations' will be quaint anachronisms inby jlegelis - Main Forum
@Boxsterra - thx for the link. so to confirm there's no service tool for aligning B&M?by jlegelis - Main Forum
@Boxsterra does the Porsche OEM alignment tool work with the B&M shifter... 've seen conflicting reports? I installed my B&M many years ago without the alignment tool (didn't know the tool even existed until this thread) and feel the shifter in need of adjustment so perhaps a nice fall project? Please LMK your experience. -JohnL Boston 2001 986Sby jlegelis - Main Forum
Are you sure it's not the cables that need to be readjusted due to stretching or age?by jlegelis - Main Forum

Take the indirect route - make it 5000 miles. Seriously 'drive it like you stole it'...by jlegelis - Main Forum
Roadtrip! What better way to enjoy a new 981, isn't that what it was built for? Take the 'blue highways' rather than the interstates for the drive of a lifetime.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Get thee a flexible hose clamp plier: Invaluable if you are doing the AOS, coolant reservoir, oil pipe or any related engine compartment hoses. egby jlegelis - Main Forum
I'm replacing the coolant reservoir on my '01 986S due to the typical age-related cracking. I've read Pedros FAQ and watched a number of YouTube videos (some better than others). Aside from purchasing the spring-clamp cable tool (done!), looking for guidance / experience on how many of the five tubes need to be removed from the *engine compartment* side, vs those that can be removed from the *truby jlegelis - Main Forum
Really intrigued by the new PCCM radios with Carplay, etc. However, noting only the double-DIN PCCM 'Plus' lists 986/996 as a supported configuration. Not wanting to give up that much dash space and losing an additional storage cubby, has anyone tried installing the single-DIN PCCM in 986 (my current unit is a factory Becker CDR220)? Science project anyone? PCCM: PCCM Plus:by jlegelis - Main Forum
From the C&D diagram, while the two units share parts they are quite different in architecture: two input shafts vs one, automatic wet clutches vs. manual dry clutches, etc. While I've driven neither it would seem the 'manual' is still (mostly) a manual and not (God forbid) some newer version of a 'Tiptronic' which was an abomination any way you market it...by jlegelis - Main Forum
Thx @blkbox and @jmstamford >> see if your water pump is giving you any signs of green stalactites Are you saying check the pump itself to see if it's dripping? >> AOS - it will go soon, so probably best to do it while you are in there. Looks like a total PITA based on videos... anyone here done one themselves? -JohnLby jlegelis - Main Forum
My amazing 2001 986 Boxster S 6 speed is about to turn 20 years old (build date 02/2001), 55k miles. She runs perfectly, driven hard but virtually untouched mechanically except for filters, fluids and similar wear items (clutch / IMS / RMS are original). Time for a major service / 20th bday present, so looking for guidance on what to touch. For reference, here's the official maintenance schedulby jlegelis - Main Forum
>> I'm hard pressed to believe that the car did not overheat in the absence of that much coolant. As Mark said, these cooling systems are over-designed, so in 'normal' driving it's highly unlikely the car overheated unless the coolant was so low the water pump wasn't able to circulate enough to cool the engine internals, so I wouldn't worry and I'd guess the temperature gauge was reading acby jlegelis - Main Forum
Congrats, but do keep an eye out for 'bore scoring' on these cars, which seems to incite equivalent paranoia as compared with the Boxster IMSB. Knowledge is power... see article in Feb 19 Pano for those who are PCA members:by jlegelis - Main Forum
New 718 GT4 is your friend... launching in July at Goodwood if the rumors are to be believedby jlegelis - Main Forum
Multiple reports indicate the 7-speed manual will still be offered (eventually) : Also, the (manual only) GT3 Touringis a big hit, and Porsche GT Boss Andreas Preuninger is a big fan of manuals, so I'm hopeful that manuals will at least continue in the GT3, GT4, and Boxster Spyder, though perhaps not for more 'pedestrian' offerings.by jlegelis - Main Forum
Alright - thx all - looks like I've got some suspension research to do first! Thx!by jlegelis - Main Forum
10 seconds?? That's crazy talk. What are they like in on the street compared to the 030? If you remember I'm up in Boston area where the roads are pretty poor.... May just have decided on my xmas present!by jlegelis - Main Forum
I'm contemplating a winter drivetrain upgrade, including new clutch, flywheel, IMS, and while I'm in there, possibly a limited slip diff such as Guard, Quaife, Wavetrac. Car sees a number of DE dates each year, as well as aggressive street driving - just trying to find a way to put down more power in tight turns, etc. Wonder if any of the track rats here have gone this route?
