Another coolant temperature gauge won't help in this case because with the loss of coolant there will not be enough coolant to circulate and thus it doesn't flow past the temperature sensor. You can check the coolant gauge for signs of over heating due to say a radiator fan that no longer runs. However, I can tell you from experience with my Boxster and Turbo even with one radiator fan non-operaby MarcW - Main Forum
Not aware the drive was that short. But I just am not comfortable heading out with any vital fluid low regardless of how brief the trip might be.by MarcW - Main Forum
Suspect the battery is low or just bad. (New battery can go bad at any time. Had a new battery go bad in just 5 months once.) Be sure the battery is good and then you need to ensure the alternator output is good. Does the car have a battery voltage gauge? If so the battery voltage should be in the 13V+ range. This can be "tricky". The output can be ok from a cold start but over time -- minuteby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteJMstamford,ct I stopped the car and restarted. The light was off. Upon my return home, the light was still off. but I checked the level - and it was borderline low. So I topped off. I will check the cap this weekend. I hope that is it. But I changed it with the coolant tank just a few years ago. So it is not original. New, of course, is not a guarantee of continuous non-defective perby MarcW - Main Forum
Why didn't you check the coolant level and top it up *before* you drove away? Boxsterra I think asks the right question, is on the right track. Most likely a bad cap. Both the cap on my Boxster's tank and the one on the Turbo developed a leak and I replaced both of them. (At different times.) The cap can't hold when the pressure gets too high and vents vapor which of course is water and the cooby MarcW - Main Forum
When I wanted to carry a bike in my Boxster I bought a folding bike from Bike Friday in Eugene OR. Drove there and had a Bike Friday employee fold the model of bike I wanted and fit it in the front trunk of the Boxster. It fit but the front wheel/tire had to be removed and stored along side the bike frame. Not a deal killer. So I ordered a bike built and shipped to me when I lived in Oak Grove,by MarcW - Main Forum
"fiddling with it" denotes a certain lack of concern for how really dangerous an air bag is. Absent being fiddled with, while rare, there were reports of spurious air bag deployment. I believe in one case a two way radio was being held by its strap with the driver's hand on the wheel and the vehicle traversing rough ground and the movement of the radio over the air bag was deemed the cause of thby MarcW - Main Forum
Same thing. When safety is in the balance better to speak up. Years ago I was in my Dodge pickup truck. Ended up behind a young woman driving some British sports car with New York plates. Noticed a rear tire low. Got out and walked up to her window and told her then turned around after she acknowledged the observation. On way back to truck heard her ask someone in the vehicle next to her's aboutby MarcW - Main Forum
Quotescallahan Hi All, I am a first time poster dealing with a couple of issues with my 99 986 that I am not sure if they could be related or not. 1. CEL P1691 error code, based on everything I have read on this board and others this is usually a burned out or malfunctioning light but in my case the light is on which is how I knew to use the code reader and got the P1691 code. Any assistance oby MarcW - Main Forum
151K miles if the AOS is orignal is impressive AOS longevity. With my car an AOS lasted around 80K to 100K miles. My 2002 Boxster had 3 AOS failures. Only the 2nd one manifested any error codes. The 1st one manifested various symptoms. One of the first symptoms was a variable idle coupled with a bit of a stumble/hesitation taking off. At the end -- so to speak -- lots of smoking. Oh, and anotherby MarcW - Main Forum
What Boxsterra asked? If the CEL is on there will be at least one active code. Even if the CEL is dark there could be a pending code. Prolonged cranking -- even for a few seconds -- with my Boxster (and Turbo) was rare. Besides the time the Boxster fuel pump failed and the engine would crank as long as I cared to let it crank with no start the few and infrequent times for any cranking time out oby MarcW - Main Forum
Quotebb1 Hey folks - Can you share guidance on whether the 2000 Boxster has a timing belt or chain, and when the recommended replacement interval is? I am pretty sure it has a chain but want to confirm (and not sure of how much, if ever, that needs to be serviced/replaced). Thanks Paul answered the question belt or chain. There is no chain service/maintenance or replacement called for by Porscby MarcW - Main Forum
Had the ignition switch replaced in my 2002 Boxster. It was not clear it was the problem but I hate a car that is unreliable and not starting at random times is my definition of not reliable. So I was willing to throw a new switch at the behavior. After having suffered from trying to fit myself under the dash to replace several of the various switches related to the clutch interlock, cruise contby MarcW - Main Forum
I used clear packaging tape to tape a small crack/split in my Boxster's rear window. It kept water out when it rained or I washed the car. I never put the top down with the tape or it would not have lasted very long at all. (The window cracked when in cold weather I tried to put the top in its service position and didn't do the "chop" quick enough.) Finally had the rear window replaced at a highby MarcW - Main Forum
If I were in the market for another Boxster that 1st one, the 550 SE, would be my choice. If the 2nd one had a 996 engine from a similar MY 996 installed that might not be too bad, but with the 997 3.8l X51 engine.... It is a Frankenstein and if there's ever any issue there's always going to be the question about is the problem due to something with the swap raising its head.by MarcW - Main Forum
Ran into this years ago shortly after I got my new 2002 Boxster. (And a few months later when I got my new 2002 VW Golf TDi.) With my Actron OBD2 tool I was able to view among other things speed and the OBD2 speed disagreed with speedo speed. The difference was very close to 5mph. The speedo was 5mph optimistic. IOWs,with 75mph showing the OBD2 speed as 70mph. I had a Garmin ETREX -- not a NAVby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteBLKBOXS After a tank of gas, after a winter hibernation my Check engine light came on with the subject codes. My Indy cleared the code and told me it was system too lean and keep an eye on it. Well the next day my eye saw the CEL. I will assume the codes will be the same. After checking the internet it looks like the AOS. No White or Blue smoke is noticeable. Quotebb1 Hey folks Looking at some Race Ramps for the Boxster They advertise as "Unscootable! Won't slip or slide, no matter the surface"....however, I can't find any pictures that show the bottom surface of these on the web. Can anyone share what that looks like or how well they perform in this regard? Thanks Race ramps I don't know. I had a set of Rhino Ramps for use with among other cars mby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteEddien Hello, I’m here looking for expert advice in purchasing a BO Dyer. Storage in a temperature stable environment helps. The car I ran across the one that had sat several (3 years I think) had sat outside somewhere in the tri-valley area where summer time daytime temps can get over 100F and then fall 40F at night. The fuel in the tank won't get that hot but the smaller fuel lines will and that just cooks the gasoline in them over time. That the car started manifesby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteMichael SYS Driver Thanks for the ideas. It sounds like I need to find a good mechanic. Actually, I did start it and drove it for about 10 minutes 2-3 years ago and it seemed fine but... Frankly that's amazing if the thing sat for 6 to 7 years without being run any. My SOP is to err on the side of caution. QuoteMichael SYS Driver Hello everyone, I used to read this board on a daily basis but I stopped driving my Boxster. It has basically sat for 9 years and I want to start it up again. I was bad and I did not remove the gas or get my car on blocks. So the tires are flat spotted. What do I need to do to get the girl up and running again? Thanks in advanced. QuoteEd B I'm helping my local Porsche body shop on a 2002 996 Turbo. Front end fire in the driveway. Not running at the time. Fire didn't get as far as gas tank but lots of melted wires and plastic. Radiator fan is suspect. Donor crashed Turbo has supplied wire harness and other parts. ABS unit replaced and recoded with my PST2. Unless you are a collector of rare cars my advice is to buy a car because it is the car you want to drive not because it is rare. The Miata while I'm sure is a nice car -- I watched an online review of the 2019 model and it has come up in the world: More power and less weight, folding hardtop; I can't see it delivering a ride anywhere near as exciting and as good as the 981 GTS. QuoteAl in Melbourne Beach It is beginning to look like my first hunch was correct. You know, suspect the last thing you did -- bought gas. The preliminary conclusion is that there was no engine damage except for that caused by bad gas. They drained the tank and it was UGLY! Engine is now running but not well. They plan to change plugs, clean injectors, flush fuel lines, replace filter, etc.by MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteAl in Melbourne Beach Saw the PM, thanks. This was a sudden and catastrophic failure. One minute he was driving home from getting fuel for a trip the next day and about 4 blocks from his house engine started running rough, check engine light came on (solid), low oil level warning (he thinks) came up (no apparent oil loss) and the engine died. electrical power rather than something seriously wrong within the engine. Before suspecting something internal in the engine ensure the battery is good and the car's electrical system, alternator, can supply enough power to not only run the engine/rest of the car, but can also recharge the battery.
