AoS - funny hose clamps
grant - Wednesday, 26 October, 2011, at 12:23:41 pm
Folks,

I was scouting out my AOS job, and i see these odd plastic hose clamps. I was expecting either the standard VW/Audi spring clips or normal turn-to-tighten hose clamps. But i see these.

How do they work? I hesitate to push/twist/etc anything too hard.

They look real hi tech. To me, it seems that they are simple zip ties: Zip Ties
squeeze on the ridges, and then wiggle.

IIRC, i had a hard time doing it the way it should be done, so i used a screwdriver to gently pry the clip over the retaining bump. [sites.google.com]
Thanks. I thought that might be the case. So as i squeeze....

... they expand, and then while squeezing, i work them over a ridge. got it?

Thanks,

Grant
Yes and don't break the clips

You push on it and it flexes. All of the muscle should be in wiggling the hose, not pushing on the clip.
they can be replaced if i DO break one. either with like, or with a general purpose clamp?

Grant
I don't think they can be replaced with a general purpose clamp

They are clips, not clamps. They just position a piece of plastic in the way so that the hose doesn't slide off. You'd be hard pressed to find a substitute. They don't usually break unless you assume that the reason you can't get the hose off is that you're not squeezing hard enough.
Minus 40 degrees... Is that Fahrenheit or Celsius?

VW uses those clamps too on the air box.....

I believe u squeeze at the 9 and 3 oclock positions and wiggle/tug them off...

P
True, and if you don't like 9 and 3

the clip freely rotates so you can reposition it where it is more convenient.
I broke mine

I guess I squeezed them too hard or something, but when I finally got that hose off, it snapped. I was glad I'd bought a replacement just in case. If I remember, the replacement is pretty cheap, around $10 I think.
a brief thanks to all for all the tips and cautions
