Tire Woes
kosiba - Saturday, 26 May, 2012, at 2:56:31 pm
Bad week for my tires. Kuhmo Ecsta ASX tires, last weekend, the back left tire (1 year old, maybe 6K miles on them) is low in air, and I assume a slow leak. I take tire off and it is shredded on the inside. Go to Tire Rack and order two rear tires yesterday. Bummer.

Then this morning, I see the following little bulge in the front tire. So my question is: is this tire ruined too?

yes, sidewall failure ("blister"winking smiley - could blow out.

Did you hit something? Maybe a large sharp pothole?

Agreed - can't risk it on that tire - could blow out at any time.

++replacing tire with bulge. You might also check the wheel for damage too. A bent wheel may not fail but may be impossible to keep from imparting unwanted vibration to the steering wheel.

Does this happen to khumos?
IUs this a trick question?

It *can* happen to any tire. Khumos are not immune to the laws of physics.

Remember also that tires are rarely"good" or"bad". every strength usually forces a corresponding trade-off and weakness.

Sticky tires Wear. Rain tires have large voids, and shear under high load. Quiet tires trade off optimum grip. Summer tires get hard and slick in the cold. Winter tires melt in the heat. the list goes on. To pick a tire you will like, you must know what you want.
