Do the 986 and 7 windows do this or is it new to the 981?

Locked, top down and side windows up. Hit unlock or either hood to open and the windows drop slightly, then when a door is opened, the usual happens: that window drops more.

Nope -- on my '03 986 the windows stay up until you actually open a door.
