VIR operated from 1957 - 1974 then lay fallow as a grazing pasture until 1998 when the current ownership began the renovation. This was one of their scouting rides, as work had begun ( as you can hear from the conversation).

Actually I was crewing for some friends with a bugeye Sprite. Back then the place was a real $h*t hole! Facililties were non-existant, restrooms were essentially outhouses, nothing nearby. My how things change!

Its a country club for cars. Fancy ( and quite good) restaurant in the old plantation house, good bar, on-site hotel, villasnd over-garage efficiencies. Nice classroom. Some of the least -awful track food around. Concession stand that also sells essentials (oil, brake fuid, etc.)

They are also paving the paddock as we type, and plan to largely re-surface the track before next season. The back (main) straight is becoming ocean-like - lots of waves. of course, that's part of the fun too.

I always wondered why that turn was called "hogpen", it was interesting seeing the actual hogpen.
