Michael Schumacher is apparently fighting for his life following a skiing accident in France. Hit his head on a rock...
Schumi is Fighting For His Life

Lets send this guy some prayers, like him or not, he was an amazing driver.

I saw that last night ...

... it just seemed weird that the press release repeated three times that he was wearing a helmet.

He's been an avid skier for some time.
A friend of mine who frequents Jackson Hole told me a few years ago he shared a lift with Schu.
He told my friend that he loved skiing in the US because of the relative anonymity.
I hope he pulls through.
Happy Porscheing

Racecar spelled backwards is Racecar

"weren't you wearing a helmet?

Apparently yes, although the repetition made me wonder.

He must have been moving pretty fast through some gnarly areas.

I love skiing - and skiing trees, bumps and outback. But you have to have a LOT of respect for the mountain.

Wish him well.

Sure hope he makes a full recovery.

definitely sounds like the most serious of the injuries he's suffered.

Helmet is very helpful with tree branches, less so if you screw up badly enough to hit a trunk, even less effective with a nasty hit on a rock or lift tower. Bad things can still happen even when you are well-prepared. Those of us who choose to ski off-trail in more gnarly terrain take a calculated risk doing so. I am sure he understood what he was doing.

I hope he comes out of it OK. I enjoyed his career and still believe he has contributions to make to the sport in some other capacity.
That's what I thought, it just seemed odd. *NM*

that means on trail or on route.

The info from the European news is there was a lot of fresh snow but with wind which left some areas a bit thin with snow and I take it MS took a fall and encountered a rock just under the snow.

Regardless, put me down as hoping he has a full and speedy recovery.

on piste (marked trails) are also ungroomed.

There's also the matter of what's "marked" when a named sign points to a bowl or wall or......

In those areas one must be very, very careful, which is difficult to do.

if you suffer a fatal accident "off-piste" this is not classified as a skiing accident. There was something on this the other day in one of the papers in response to some skiing deaths.
So are you equating "off piste" to "out of boundaries"? *NM*

Here is a statement from the family spokesperson:
jg wnc - Tuesday, 31 December, 2013, at 10:25:12 am
"It was not an off-piste track. They (Schumacher and his son Mick) were skiing on pistes, but in the moment that it happened, it was not on the piste."

I am not fully sure what this means. It is pretty ambiguous. It could mean that they were hitting the areas between marked runs, or maybe they ducked out of bounds on a run that bordered on the edge of the ski area.

Regardless, I saw that he had a second operation last night and seems to be improving. Wishing him and his family the best.
My interpretation
Boxsterra - Tuesday, 31 December, 2013, at 8:25:32 pm
is that he was on-piste until he lost control. Then he was off-piste.
Latest is he's stable, but still critical. *NM*
