Does oil go bad????
Joanne in OC - Tuesday, 31 December, 2013, at 4:25:56 pm
I am redoing my entire garage and am in the process of taking everything out so the current cabinets can be removed. I found a case of Mobil 1 oil. I don't remember buying it but it must be a long time ago when I had my other Boxster. It used to drink alot of oil in the beginning but then it stopped. I think there was a sale and I stocked up on it.

Is it still good? I don't see an expiration date on the bottle.

Thanks
Joanne

It's mostly likely over 8 years

I don't need it right now.

Just not sure if I should toss it or keep it for when I will need it.

Thanks
Joanne

Excellent question!

Here is what I found on the moble 1 site.

"ExxonMobil recommends a five year maximum shelf-life for engine oils, including Mobil 1™ synthetic"

Thanks...... Now I'll have to really look at them and see if there is a date.

Should be like meds and food with expiration dates smiling smiley

Thanks
Joanne
The answer will have little actual merit except to limit their liability.

I still cant think of anything that will degrade much, if sealed

The oil? Stable until the next dinosaurs. Most additives likewise. Antacid? I still sue 10 year old tums.

I recall reading that if you live in temperate climates the freeze/ thaw effect causes condensation in the bottle the same as in the engine during warm up and cool downs.
There should be no water in a sealed bottle of motor oil. *NM*

Is there an expiration on the bottle? Is your car under warranty? If answers are no, and yes...use it.
