i will never have a better drive to work
Steve (Morro Bay) - Thursday, 17 February, 2011, at 10:35:25 pm
Was getting a little overwhelmed at work, so during an open part of my schedule this tuesday afternoon I drove up to Big Sur and stayed the night. Rain came down all that night while i prepared lectures in the motel. Just in time for my drive back to work on wednesday, the sun broke through. I don't think I'll ever have a drive to work like that again. Two hours of hwy 1, with hardly another car on the road. I was in a rush, so didn't have a lot of time to pull over and capture the majestic views, but these few random shots give the idea.

With all the rain we've been having you were very lucky the road hadn't slid out. Having said that, you must not have had too much in the way of inhibiting traffic!
There were a couple recently repaired slide areas

I was worried that the rain from the night before would somehow block my way home, but it turned out to be no big deal. There was one patch with a handfull of fist-sized stones in the road, but they were easily avoided since you have to go so slow anyway.
Great stretch of road!

I have driven it several times, and hope to many more.

That is a beautiful drive this time of year

Very few RVs and sometimes you're lucky enough to head down to Morro Bay with some Boxster Budies smiling smiley

That last location looks familiar.

Sepember 2009. Temperature in the mid 80's.

Same place... just missing the seagull. smiling smiley

Absolutely true, but I'll take the 85 degree sunshine over the seagull any day. Specially, knowing what the seagulls leave behind. grinning smiley

We have some beautiful top downs drives in SoFL too.....
Gary in SoFL - Friday, 18 February, 2011, at 3:05:09 pm

BTW, I made that PCH drive about 30 years ago in the wee hours, averaging well over the century mark, to stand up at a good friends military wedding. No radar dector, no rain, no pictures, usual fog, some chirping from the right seat, and best of all....no CHP speeding tickets. Great memory!

BTW, is that a Passport 9500ix or ci on your dash, David, and how do you like it?
Really disappointed in you Gary

I would have thought that with a headline like "We have some beautiful top downs drives in SoFL too..... " the picture would have been a Gary special.

Not that that actual picture is bad, it's very nice.

is the first time in a while Gary has heard "your resources amaze me..."

OK, maybe that was a little below the belt . . .

that is the 9500ix on my window
Steve (Morro Bay) - Friday, 18 February, 2011, at 3:42:59 pm
I'm not David though smiling smiley I've had it for about 3 years now, and I love it. Too bad it was unplugged and in my glove box when I got pulled over last month. The ticket I got is going to cost about as much as the detector...

I can't even imagine averaging over 100 on hwy 1. I was usually faster than the other cars around me, but nowhere near that fast.

Yes, you can average over 100 on the PCH. Not saying that I HAVE done it, but I know it can be done . . .

The RVs and slow cars would not use the turnouts. angry smiley I had an F430 behind me and I could tell he was more impatient that I. I could not make a safe pass (All solid yellow lines), so I stayed in the cattle congo line.

Low and behold, he passes me and 3 other cars on a blind outside curve. Like the quote above, what a maniac. He could have taken out many lives if a car had been around the bend.

I wait for more appropriate opportunities on passing manuevers, thank you..
Thanks for the pics, Steve...

The Big Sur area has to be one of the most dramatically beautiful places on earth. I can't imagine how cool it would be to head out of the office and have *that* amazing stretch of road waiting for you!
