My friend and I went up Mt. Evans in Colorado (over 14,000 feet) in a puny Volvo B18, but were able to maintain a decent clip at times, even with the automatic transmission constantly hunting through gears. What really killed much of our progress, here and several other places* were VW buses, etc. My friend referred to them as "the scourge of the highways."

*Like along the Salt River Canyon in Arizona, if I recall correctly.
