ANBC: Drive down California 101
jwdbox - Friday, 3 June, 2011, at 11:06:32 pm
As part of an extended West Coast drive including visiting our son in Seattle, taking in the awe inspiring scenery (Federal and State Parks), golfing and enjoying the varieties of primarily great seafood, in our drive today in from Oregon to Napa California, I was amazed at how many police we encountered with live radar and pulling people over along the entire run. In all of my years of driving I have never seen so many police on the road as on 101 today. Is this the way California is attempting to make up their budget deficit grinning smiley ? In addition to spectacular scenery and some super twisty roads around Petaluma, my Escort almost never stopped going off and with the exception of the 'your speed' signs, there was always at least one police car present, frequently giving someone a ticket. Did come across a very nice Carrera, a couple of 911s and a couple of 986s (along with a caravan of great looking Chevy and Ford street rods, a Morgan and two Cobras and of course RVs).cool smiley
but really where I drive in the bay area speed enforcement is pretty thin.

If police would more strictly enforce the traffic laws (not just speeding, but following too close, cell phone usage, stop sign and red light running) CA would be running a budget surplus.

If you're driving today be careful. Most CA drivers can't drive worth a darn in dry weather let alone in wet weather. In the rain they're killers behind the wheel.

Sincerely,

MarcW.
Thanks Marc. We did take extra care when we went out to some of the wineries today, after our golf game at Silverado in the continuous downpour For some strange reason we were the only ones on the course smiling bouncing smiley . Had to get some more Heitz Cellar Bella Oaks. Also ran across a group of 'Rodders' doing their own multi-winery tour and one fairly new 911 and one winking smileywinking smiley hard top Boxster. cool smiley
a hardtop. Never takes the hardtop off unless he needs access to the engine compartment.

Sincerely,

MarcW.

The Wine Country Historic Races are going on this weekend. Might explain the chp presence.

Sounds like you are doing our Napa trip in reverse as we live in Seattle. Be sure to catch some highway 1 in both California and Oregon if you have time. HWY 1 North of Fort Bragg has EPIC curves and views!

You should also consider the road from Crater Lake West back towards Highway 5 if you are headed on the Eastern path.

We have some recommendations for lodging if you're interested.

Enjoy!

TechJockey,

If the OP is not interested in lodging suggestions I am since my wife and I are planning a late July/early August highway 101 trip down the coast.

Thanks very much for the offer of suggestions. We are now on the way to Yosemite. We did enjoy parts of HY 1 and some of the truly epic curves. Ran into fresh snow at Crater Lake

and near the end of our mini-grand Western tour for now.cool smiley
On today's drive in Yosemite en route to Glacier Point the drive was phenomenal: Spectacular views and tons of twisties. We were very lucky with light traffic. Started on the western side and the road surface was in very good condition as compared to the eastern side which was older and with some frost/pot holes. One had to take care particularly in the sharp curves for fallen rocks. Here is one look back at the road up:
