I've had 4 power window regulators fail (on other cars, NOT on a Boxster) and never a motor failure.
The regulator would be my first guess.

... never have had to replace motor in a Porsche.
What generally goes is a plastic spacer in the regulator that keeps the cable tight.

I assumed it was the regulator that went bad in mine and it turned out it was the motor. The motor would only turn forwards. You may as well open up the door panel and diagnose it or you may end up with a spare regulator like I did.
