I think the extremely low temperatures and just enough salt turned them into ice rinks - I almost spun Red Lightnin' out on Connecticut Ave. in Chevy Chase (where the county had done no salting, no plowing, no anything). Thank God for my time on the skid pad! Scared the heck out of the guy behind me! First, I will reiterate what everyone else on the Board has said - $19K for an '02 S is high. There is a 2000 with 46K miles for sale on this Board right now with the owner asking $16,000. So you can probably get the 986 S that you want for $15 - $17K. That being said, $28K for a 987 S is actually a pretty decent price. Total cost for new top and window installed: $1000 I have heard mixed things about the aftermarket glass window tops - some people really like them, some have been disappointed. But Marc's point about Service Access is true - we had to access a friend's engine at the track with an aftermarket glass window top it is was very, very difficult. I have a '98 and have had occasional problems. First, check to make sure that the locking computer under the Driver's Seat isn't wet. Then make sure everything is locked, pop the front trunk and disconnect the battery for about two minutes (don't close the front trunk, watch yourself around the terminals, and make sure you have your radio code). Could be several problems: 1) Bad temp sensors (unfortunately don't know much about these, but you can probably find out more at the Pelican Parts board) 2) The gates in the ducts are malfunctioning - but you should be able to check this by switching back and forth between heat and A/C 3) Problems with the heat exchanger (you haven't had any coolant or engine cooling issues have you? recent cooby Red_Lightnin! - Main Forum
Yes, and remember the temperature sensors are not where you are sitting - depending on which model you have, you can lose a lot of heat through the top and have a cold head while the dashboard is nice and toasty. You can observe the same phenomena in the summer, where the A/C is still blowing despite having an icicle up your nose b/c the sun is shining on the dash. On the 986, there is a plastic line that runs from the clutch master cyinder in the front back to the slave on the side of the tranny in the back. IIRC, the plastic line is blue and connects to what is basically a flexible brake line that then connects to a metal line that looks like a steel curly-fry that connects to the slave in the tranny. Probably true, but I think the challenge for all these cars now are the laws. With the Feds pushing for mandatory 40MPG+, I just can't see having normally aspirated performance without a Lotus Elise type format, unless of course they make a pickup truck version of the Boxster and slip it through the SUV loopholes - "El Boxstero" I think your point about the M3 is interesting, but remember thatby Red_Lightnin! - Main Forum
The general theory is that part of the problem stems from not driving the car enough. If you look at the posts, the failures tend to be older, very low mileage cars (though not always) and one of the theories is that if you are not running the engine regularly (at least once a week, several hours plus, etc.) the oil drains out and causes the bearing to fail. Bruce - the smell you are describing is more consistent with coolant than A/C refrigerant. Looks like it is pretty easy to get in there and do this, and if there is any coolant in the box, you have your answer. This is actually an important repair, since this is the same coolant that cools the motor and you don't want a leak in the coolant system.by Red_Lightnin! - Main Forum
But given modern regulatory realities, I think it is going to be harder to get the performance we want, stay street legal, and do it with traditional NA motors. The reason for the IMS was to get rid of the use of timing belts and chains and the need to replace them every 50,000 miles at substantial cost. Definitely not a perfect fix, but then again, no engine is perfect. Toyota and Honda, widely considered to be the paragons of quality, have engine failure issues too. IIRC - that is the layout the WRX uses. Would result in more power and less weight. More importantly, as the Fed Gov't ratchets up the emissions, safety and fuel economy requirements, it's gonna be hard to deliver the power to weight ratio necessary for Porsche performance with a normally aspirated motor.by Red_Lightnin! - Main Forum
