You absolutely need to replace with a top from a 2003-04. I upgraded my 2000 2.7. Best upgrade I could have done. Those have the glass rear window with defogger - needed for northern climes. Those also have the headliner that although cheapish, does make a difference. If you have a helper, it is a DIY job. Basically a few bolts on either side. On my car, there is plastic wire mount in the way. Without the extension hose clamp pliers (purchased for the coolant tank) the job would have been impossible. The rear portion of the bellows became kinked when I removed the blue clip. It might have held, but I was not willing to risk it. I tried to replace the blue clip, but no luck. One of the most unfulfilling jobs I have ever done on a car. It would have been easy enough had the blue clip come off the clamp without disturbing the rubber bellies. But the clearance was so bad.... Three hours later and a trip for a jubilee clip later and I was back to that point. The job was not hard per se. I submit that with the amount of oil i observed leaking into the intake from the throttle body, there could well be micro-droplets (if that is a word) of oil that could contaminate the MAF. Otherwise the MAF codes from last week are an unusual coincidence with the failed AOS. I am not going to remove the entire intake manifold. It is simply too big a job for limited benefit. There was an obvious "V" shaped leak of oil through the bottom of the throttle body flap. When removed from the air intake, there was obvious oil in the intake that was visible dark brown to the touch. I did not reach in to clean it up yet, but there is clearly more than a sheen. Perhaps coincidentally, I was getting MAF codes last week. There was no obvious oil on it when I cleaned the MAF,by JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum
I think have to get both black cross pipes off the intake manifolds to clean them. I thought there was a valve of sorts in the cross pipe next to the "T" pipe the throttle body attaches to? There was oil pooled in the bottom of both intake manifolds. If i do not wipe it out, it will take a while to burn through the engine. no? It was also in the air intake, so I will clean that too.by JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum
The oil was all over - actually ponding in places. It easily took 10+ paper towels to clean the T-section. I have to get the rear cross piece off tomorrow. So and AOS is definitely in the offing.by JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum

Huge plumes of white oil smoke. I think I have an AOS replacement in my future. I should know the symptoms by heart, but I don't. I will pull the throttle body tonight and see what is in there. Are there other obvious symptoms? Is there a way to distinguish AOS from something else? I know, I know I should have done it profalactically. My general view is buy the newest vehicle you can comfortably afford. There are pros and cons of every version of the car and no magic bullets. If I were in the market, I would be looking for an '03-'04 model year "S" model. I would plan an early clutch and IMS job and then enjoy the car. That view incorporates a bunch of personal preferences - in particular the view that 986 models are the bby JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum
One of the aides I did not disable was the front end collision sensor. I has annoyingly triggered the brakes, but it does seem to legitimately help. I might fell differently if'n i gets me rear ended. But for the sudden stop in front or the dart out kid .... I agree.by JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum
Whether it be faulty snesors or faulty code - or whatever - the computer effectively overuled the pilots. We started the conversation when I said that in most cases, electric and autonomous cars are better - but not all. I stand by that view.by JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum
Some years ago I was acquainted with an airline pilot. He used to complain about the differences between Airbus jets and Boeing jets. His concern focused on the amount of computer control Airbus insisted upon vs. the ability to manually control a Boeing if one needed to. (There was more than that, but I do not recall exactly). I do not profess to be and I do not want to extend the debate. But by way of one singular example.... On my way home from work there is an extended slope. The roadway is slightly elevated, but not a bridge or similar. The roadbed is just higher than the surrounding area. Autonomous cars are coming. And for commuting on freeways, I generally support the idea. It will maximize the number of cars on the hwy and maintain the speed that can be maintained. Ultimately, the freeways will be like trains and cars will move very efficiently. Off freeways, I am not sure how long it will be until truly autonomous cars take over. I suspect that is true in many, but not all, situations. I am not sure that equates to "better" in all senses. To be clear, I am for safety, but there is a line somewhere. I remember having to replace child seats because of a regulation based on - "if is save one child then it is worth it." The seats we swapped out were one of the most advanced when new. when was the last time that most people pulled out a dipstick under the hood to check the level of dinosaur juice in the engine? Sunday - on the Tribeca. ( I have two cars without dipsticks - it drives me nuts - along with a bunch of the other electronics in the car.) We also changed a light bulb. change a tire? About 3 mos ago -swapped snows on. Electric cars are but the first step. The Tesla's and even my volvo could probably operate without a driver on the highway already. Driving will be a lost art/skill within 20 or so years. I am not happy about that. I am also not happy about electric cars generally. It is a step toward making them appliances. Other than stability control - which can usually be disabled in some respect, the rest of the innovations are clear improvements. Even moldy figs would not object to them. They do not radically alter the experience. Changing to electric - driverless vehicles will though.by JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum
I am just not interested in electric cars. But it looks like all the companies are heading in that direction. My grandkids will not understand what it was like to drive. They might understand steering or piloting, but driving may be a thing of the past.by JM-Stamford,CT - Main Forum
