QuoteJackintheBoxster There seems to be a consensus among reviewers, thankfully including the relatively few written by reporters who can put a sentence together and are not just copying from what is already out there, that the 718 is a remarkably good car, better than the competition, other than the sound. The latest I've seen is this one, comparing it to the Jaguar F-Type (really? you guys thiby MikenOH - Main Forum

Looks like you had perfect weather for the event. Agreed on the mixed run group visuals--when the Red/Black runs groups are mostly high HP cars with experienced drivers, you end up seeing a lot of tail lights go by at speed. At VIR, the track is long enough and has enough straights to help clear the trains out, but you have to keep your eye on the RV mirror at all times because of the closing spby MikenOH - Main Forum
Bruce--thanks for the reply. I had forgotten that you had two and Grant brought one of them back to life, so you two guys have a lot of experience with bad Porsche motors. From the reports I got, there was no gushing oil or loud metal on metal noises, just a loss of power and he turned off the engine quickly. The car was taken to an experienced Indy that pulled the motor and started going throughby MikenOH - Main Forum
Thanks for the reply, Marc. I've seen reports of this type of failure on internet searches, but the frequency would seem very small relative to the IMS bearing failures. FWIW, when the engine was inspected, the IMS bearing assy. looked fine.by MikenOH - Main Forum
A good friend sustained engine damage due to his engine cams going out of time due to the IMS sprocket slipping on the shaft--first time I've heard of it. The cause was determined during the engine tear down to see if it was repairable. Does anyone know how this sprocket is attached to the shaft at the factory? I ask since I've seen youtube videos that show the sprockets being attached via drillby MikenOH - Main Forum

Quotegrant QuoteMarcW Vehicle emissions never accounted for that much anyhow. The only reason vehicles were caught up in this in the first place was when the power generating plant operators -- the electric companies -- were told to clean up emissions they started pointing fingers at automobiles. I wish. We do a Halloween party every year and there is usually a conflict with the NNJPCA date for that DE. We will be at Mid-OH next May for the NNJ event for sure. So, it sounds like the automakers will have a heck of a dilemma to get certification--wack NOx emissions and raise mileage, while still provide a power plant that will move the car along. IIRC, CO2 emissions track mileage--less gasoline burned, less CO2; NOx--I'm not sure; is this a product of the burning of diesel fuel with a turbo motor or does this occur with the same frequency with gasolineby MikenOH - Main Forum
Not hitting NOX or mileage numbers required with new emission testing methods. Seems to suggest hybrids will be the future for high mileage cars rather than diesels.by MikenOH - Main Forum
From Motortrend. so take this with a grain of salt. A couple of observations: --The 911 S was timed 0-60 in 3.1 seconds. 11.5 in the 1/4 mile--that is very fast. --The GS was nearly a second faster round the track, courtesy of OE track tires that were huge--285 series tires on the front. --Roughly $40K difference in price either decked out or base. --With regard to styling, these two cars coulby MikenOH - Main Forum
As Chris puts it, "And so what we have here is a car that has lost a good deal of its emotional appeal". Shouldn't that be what a sports car is all about? If I just want something to get me from here to there, there are lots of other choices out there. If I'm spending that much money, I want something that I'm excited to drive. ...and that I am, every time I fire up my Boxster. That is exactlyby MikenOH - Main Forum
Lot's of power, feels a bit more nimble, styling still good-- but the noise is God-awful. I'm thinking the stock exhaust note is a god-send to aftermarket vendors like FVD and Fabspeed; whatever exhaust system they produce for this model will be an improvement .by MikenOH - Main Forum
QuoteGuenter in Ontario Compared to last September, Boxster/Cayman sales are down about 30%. 911 sales are down almost 40%. ...hmmmm I wonder what Porsche reads into those figures. I think after a few more months we'll have enough of a trend to see if Porsche has laid an egg with the 718. Locally, the 3 launch cars that I drove 2 1/2 months ago are still on the dealer lot. I was a a local Indy's place the other day and heard the same story. A guy had bought an early 80's SC with an engine that had never been touched and now decided to go through it. The deeper you get into it, the more apparent what the needs are--which means more money. I think it's pretty clear that on Porsche NA 6 engines, the bumps in HP come at a very high premium--and you didn't get very much after you spent all that $. It will be interesting to see what Porsche or aftermarket tuners do with the new turbo motors. It seems pretty clear that turbos can be tweeked to deliver significant HP/TQ increases. But it is superior in many ways for a track car - better visibility, slightly better protection, easier to maintain, etc. I believe they are required for all forms of club racing in PCA as well. The closest one is in Warren, OH about 2 hours way--which makes it tough sell for roughly 10 minutes of seat time/event. Not sure how much of that he wants to do anyway-- it seemed he was more interested in bumping the power a bit just for street use. I had them in our car for the past three years and had a new set installed last fall; used both at the track and on the street. Quotegrant What i can say is that the 981 series cars were a real chassis step-up from the 986/987 series (which were pretty similar). From my experience driving them on track and especially at autocross ( as well as 100s on the street) they are just plain better planted - fewer handling quirks.
