QuoteBarryL I enjoy my Boxster as much now as I did 15 years and 207K miles ago when I drove it out of the show room floor. Now its time to get a hands free cell phone solution. Anyone have experience upgrading? I have the standard becker radio and six speakers (floor, dash and rear storage console). Quotegrant A set of high quality, wired. earbuds or phones. best if with a boom mic. If bluetooth is essential, i like the Delton over-head, boom mic unit. G Although it is seldom, if ever, enforced, in FL it is (or was, the last time I looked) illegal to drive with headphones/earbuds in. I will never do that - if I had I wouldn't be here today. Found the alarm wire for the rsdio. Pulled it from the frame switch and all is well.by Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Here are a couple of pictures, one of the Nav screen and one of the SiriusXM screen. In both cases you can see the USB connector for iPhone integration and map updates in the top left of the cubby. Handsfree, Music, and Pandora, etc. work over Bluetooth. I'm not sure what the USB adds for iPhone, but I'll find out, I guess. Alpine does have an app that lets you save some settings. Here's the process I went through to replace my CDR-220 with the Alpine INE-W960: Previously I had performed the cupholderrectomy, moved the AC control to the top of the console stack, put the CDR-220 in position 2, and put the original and an added cubby in the two lower positions. I mounted an XM Roady II in the top cubby and a Garmin GPS in the bottom cubby. All this had to be removed. 1. Iby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
So, I got the new radio installed and was congratulating myself when I saw navigation maps and heard FM radio. Then I hooked up the Sirius XM tuner. The display acted normally, I could see the channels and tune around but I had no audio. I spent a half hour on the phone with Sirius (non-) technical support with no success. I was preparing to send the tuner back but had to head for BRBS so I tby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Since changing my radio out (long story re: audio problems to follow) my alarm system is chirping when I lock up. I finally broke down and read the car's manual. Apparently there is a contact that shorts to ground when the radio is removed. Does anyone know where it is? The service manual says it is part of the radio frame. I didn't see anything that caught my attention when I pulled the CDRby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum

Thanks Stefan, Actually, the part that is broken is the door/flap. I think I get that by ordering (which I wouldn't have found without your suggestion). I still haven't given up on finding the broken peg and gluing it on, or fabbing one somehow. Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Duh, I didn't think of that..... Thanks, Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
I think the visor was up, and the mirror flap got opened somehow. When the top closed it came down on the flap. Is the flap available as a part? I'll check e-bay. Edit - Folks are proud of these things. Best price for a non-lighted one is $49. Most in the $100 and up range. Maybe I can find the broken part and glue it..... Closed my top on mine and broke the vanity mirror door. Attending BRBS if anyone is coming and has one. Thanks, Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Parts for Sale
The display went wierd on my CDR-220. Also, I have an aftermarket GPS on a Garmin mount in one cubby and an XM receiver on another Garmin mount in the second cubby. I priced replacing the CDR-220 or just the front panel and wow! I couldn't believe the prices, even for used on e-Bay. I bought an Alpine INE-W960 and am installing it now. Should have put this in the parts for sale forum. Sorry, can't see how to delete it. So Duh, I was working on the car the other day and closed the top with the sun visor in the wrong position. It broke the door on the vanity mirror. Anybody got one surplus? If so, are you coming to BRBS? Thanks, Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Pedro, I'm not familiar with the arrangement of the IMS and its bearing, but if this kit pushes oil through the shaft and it gets to the bearing, wouldn't oil from the DOF flow into the shaft as well? Just curious.... Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Moved to proper level.....by Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Thanks Pedro - All good considerations. In my case one doesn't apply, since I have the ceramic bearing with no seals which I had installed before DOF was available, but the others are significant concerns. Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
I have not seen it before. If I am correct, it would be even easier on a Boxster as the oil pump is on the front of the engine accessible through the cabin as if replacing the serpentine belt. I can't speak to the efficacy of this mod, but on the surface it seems like a good idea, as long as it doesn't starve some other part of the engine for oil. Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Periodically I have trouble with my ignition switch not turning. I don't think it is the electrical part of the switch, and here's why: When the switch is operating normally and I pull the key out of the ignition I hear a "clunk" which, I think, is the steering wheel lock engaging. Sometimes if there is some residual torque on the wheel, it is hard or impossible to turn the key. This is exactby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Thanks everyone. Going with Tony's pulls. I just don't want to fool with building something right now and over $200 from Suncoast just doesn't excite me when I can buy good replacements for $50-$80 per pair. Although I have to admit Laz's guy was tempting. Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Thanks Tony and BurgBoxster. I have a little more research to do. It sure looks like the holes in the plate are large enough but I'll pull a speaker to be sure. The 3.5" units I saw said the mounting hole was 3-3/16. Mine is over 3" but may not be big enough. I'm inclined to try to upgrade to 3-1/2, but if it turns out to be a hassle I'll PM Tony. Thanks Grant. I was trying to decide whether to go Hi-Z (4-ohm 4x6) or Lo-Z (two 4-ohm 3.5" rounds in parallel). Sounds like Lo-Z is the way to go. Probably series MOSFET drivers in the amp. Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
I wasn't aware I could get just the drivers. I'll give that a try, but I was hoping to upgrade to something with a little better specs. I can find a lot of information on upgrading the dash and door speakers, but not the rears. I'd rather replace with two 8-ohms in parallel than two 4-ohms. I think the amp will be better capable of driving the higher impedance without clipping than the low imby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
All I can find is 4 ohm speakers in that size. The original two 6-ohm speakers in parallel would be 3 ohms. Two 4-ohm speakers in parallel would be 2 ohms. I don't know what the drive characteristics of the 996 6-channel amp are. Thanks, Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
I pulled my rear shelf speaker unit in the process of replacing my air filter and noticed that the suspension for the speakers is shot. Mold/mildew on the rings, tears, and will fall apart when touched. I have the Porsche rear speaker kit with the Haes 6 ohm speakers. Has anyone replaced these, and if so, with what? Thanks, Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Marc, I don't know what year your car is, but I put a 2003 glass window top on my 2002 base Boxster and it was a fairly simple job. I bought mine from a wrecking yard in NJ and had it trucked to FL. Total cost of around $1000. The visibility is a little restricted from the original but WAY better than the aftermarket tops. Do you have the CD changer? This cable requires there to be one, it says. I bought the Becker AUX adapter for my 2001 CDR. Alby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
Got mine from deutschepartsusa on eBay. Appears to be a genuine german-made OEM part. I did the install, but didn't pop rivet the boxster stop so now I have to open the door up again. As it says on the other boards, if you don't put in the stop, the window rattles when you close the door. I vaguely remembered something about having to move a clip or something, but there were no instructions wby Al in Melbourne Beach - Main Forum
