Spent a week in the ICU following some virus and my insulin pump wonking out. Called my mechanic and told him to find me a tip transmission and put it in the car. Life’s too short to drive a Subaru year round. Thanks for all the input. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
The $3K was labor to drop in a ‘new’ $3K tip purchased out of another car.by AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Struck out with Tom - outside his wheelhouse and his only referral (in Norwalk) doesn't do this either. Looking grim for Betsy. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I can buy a transmission for about $3K; my mechanic however is quoting $3k in labor plus fluids plus all the other ‘stuff’ that he would have to do as part of the transplant - ie not brakes or something. He is saying the car is worth about $5K in parts. I know of no one else to get a quote from in Central Jersey, but $6K makes no sense even though I love a 22 year old car. I also don’tby AndyInNYC - Main Forum

My 2000 base Boxster destroyed its tiptronic transmission years ago and was replaced with one we found online. I developed ‘bad’’ noises and had it towed to my mechanic over the weekend. He is telling me that the transmission fluid is full of metal and my trans is dead. Aside from trying to find a working 2000-2004 tiptronic, and spending more than the economic value of the car to fix (aby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
My local firestone, via the 'installer' page on tirerack is $22/tire + $5 for TPMS (my car doesn't have it, so I wouldn't pay that) + 8% shop fee + tax. That's $102.16 for the installation with 7% tax. I know we paid more for mounting/balancing when my wife put tires on a car without me. Are you stating that your dealer's price on tirerack.com is $196? Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
When I have ordered from Tire Rack, they offer a list of 'approved installers' from which I can pick and they (Tire Rack) provides the price. I've found this is MUCH less than the individual installer has wanted for the job without the Tire Rack pricing. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I'm not sure if I love or hate the plaid fabric detail. But since I'm stating it, it's obviously a wow-factor/unique thing. Hope you got a chance to do some fishing while you were there. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Responding to my own post. This little battery has come in handy. I've jump started a number of people's cars (but I've never had to use it on the Boxster). In one day during the summer I jump started 3 different cars; thought I had a 4th, but they had a broken hose or something so I couldn't help . Even though I have AAA, I'll keep one in my cars from now on. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Happy to send you the key and take my chances. I understand the problem though - since you can't prove the negative you only 'know' that it's fixed when you try it. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I have two keys for my 2000 Boxster. One key, which has been the backup pops the locks each time. My 'main key' lights up when I press it, but no longer locks/unlocks the doors/sets the alarm. It's my foggy recollection that this is caused by tiny breaks (or big ones) in the soldering on the key and can be repaired by clever people (I'm not clever). Can this be defined as my problem, or couldby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
A number of things were wrong with my 2000 Boxster and I took it in to Provost Motorsports in Bordentown, NJ. Provost has done all work on the car since we moved to NJ and the car went out of warranty. I've been hit, I've hit things, stuff has broken - they've always put her back together and done great work. I had a troubling list of ailments and was concerned something was going to be more eby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
That's probably a big plus in selling - my son (17) thinks the Tip is very cool (and he doesn't have to worry about stalling/paying attention to shifting when he doesn't want to). I feel the same way (and I suck at stick). Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Golly, it doesn't stretch back 22 years to cover my car. Bummer!by AndyInNYC - Main Forum
My old key for my 2000 Boxster was giving me issues (the two sides wouldn't click together and hold.). My mechanic transferred the electronics and pill to a new housing and all was well. Now, however, SOMETIMES when I press the unlock button, while the key lights up the lock/alarm doesn't disengage. Then, eventually it will. Is there an easy fix for this on a 22 year old car? Got the new one. Stuffed in my nifty new LED bulb. Stuffed it back into the car. Boom! White light for the next 20 years when I open the doors Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
The Good: Changed the bulb. The Bad: Snapped every clip in the assembly The Not So Bad; $25 w/shipping and tax and I'll stick a new one in there Might as well call it a disposable part.by AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Guenther, I'll try to find my manual. Does it indicate which side to push/pry in #1? Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Do directions not exist anywhere? I can’t find anything online. Not sure if I pry out left to right or back to front on a 2000. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Thanks for your reply. My bigger issue is 'how to get it out'. The videos I've seen appear to show a different layout than I have - but I'm really bad with visual layouts. Do I pry out the rectangle or do I 'pop off the covers' or do I follow this: The few messages I've seen say that prying out the rectangle usually results in broken retaining clips. Is there a good set of directions out thby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I appears that the overhead light (controlled by a 3 way rocker above the rear view mirror) has burnt out. Can someone tell me what bulb I need to buy and point me to a set of directions to do the replacement? This is a 2000 base (non-S) Boxster. Thanks Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
All true, but my plastic is now 22 years old.by AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I'm actually in the Princeton, NJ area - if there are people who are interested in beer, pizza and gas money (likely more than the mechanic fee with current inflation) please respond and I'll pursue a new top. Any more local to me parts dealers I should check? Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
So I bought a cheap ODB2 reader from Amazon: OUK-BT OBD Scan Tool, Red Universal OBD II Car Diagnostic Scanner Code Reader Automotive Fault Diagnostic Tool for All OBD2 Protocol Compliant Vehicles for $16 + tax The device had no problem recognizing the car and reading the error - great $16!. It read and I cleared a P0440 - which may indeed be due to the gas cap. Now to see if the error, on myby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
And my mechanic said $800 or so to remove old and install new - 1/2 day and lots of fiddling for adjustments. Local guy wants $850 to sew in new plastic on existing top (which he removes). Might make sense to see what he charges to drop the new top on the car . Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I have a CEL (not blinking) on my dash. I recently filled the tank. I opened and reclosed the gas cap. If that 'solves' the problem, how many start/stop engine cycles will it take to clear the error light? Or must it be reset via ODB2/mechanic? Can someone suggest from Amazon a cheap ODB2 reader that will let me look up any error codes? I seem to remember the 2000 Boxsters weren't readable bby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
Shipping coast to coast might be as much as $600 per the guy in AZ I just spoke to. Wow! $600 for the part, $600 to ship it. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I replaced the struts on the rear trunk of my 2000 - super easy and huge bang for the buck. From so annoying to back to the girl I love.by AndyInNYC - Main Forum
I have two which I replaced new. one side is clear and the other has yellowing. This is off a base 2000. send me an email/message as well. Andrewby AndyInNYC - Main Forum
