Karmann built several body program runs for Porsche, but the cars were always assembled at Werk 1(save for the 4 cylinder 914--Sixes were assembled by Porsche). This was the case even at Reutter who's coach building plant was across an ally from Werk 1. It was eventually absorbed by Porsche to ramp up for 901 production. A neat side note: Reutter did not sell all of their business interests toby SPG356 - Main Forum
Serial numbers of early cars have kind of a neat pattern. Starting with 356A production and the 6 digit serial number, Reutter built coupes started with a "1", the Reutter cabriolets started with "15", Karmann built Hardtops started with "20" and Karmann coupes started with a "21". Early 901's started with a 3, and thank you Laz, I did not realize the Karmann built 912's started with a "4".by SPG356 - Main Forum

Year 'round top-down driving state!! Yesterday I cruised the Boxster top down for about an hour and a half here in Ann Arbor (unheard of in early March--mid 60's !!) This means the top has been down at least one day each of the last 12 months. Should I alert the Michigan chamber of commerce so they can advertise our great state as a warm weather destination for the snow birds? Guenter, you shby SPG356 - Main Forum

I Pay it!! I drive mine year round. A set of winter tires and good to go. Most years there are only a couple of days out of the winter that the snowfall is too high to get out of my neighborhood. One thing I love doing is motoring by people with FWD cars that are stuck in the snow BTW, top down in Ann Arbor again today!!by SPG356 - Main Forum
Top down again today here in Ann Arbor and tomorrow is going to be even warmer!! This is absolutely unheard of. Pics this time (above the windshield):by SPG356 - Main Forum
Newt, I was so excited I didn't even think of taking a picture. I have actually had the top down at least one day during each of the last four months. That has never happened before here!!by SPG356 - Main Forum
If you want some "fun", read any British 356 publication...always full of obvious errors. One thing that they are consistent with is they always refer to calender year and not the model year when stating that a certain model, feature or option appeared, thus the 1999 appearance of the "S" and the 2002 appearance of the glass back window. Everything else--accuracy wise--take it with a grain of saby SPG356 - Main Forum
I'd like to hear everybody's opinion again in a few months... when they see it in person. I've been in the auto business 20+ years and many a time have people been disappointed by pictures only to be excited when seeing the car for real. And it goes both ways...I've lusted for a car in pictures only to be supremely let down when it goes into production. Let's hope we all just end up liking it!!by SPG356 - Main Forum
QuotedghiiI finally got a chance to drive a used one while working in Charleston, SC and was immediately hooked as the car felt and sounded like a real sports car. The one I bought was bullet proof in the five years I owned it and was just as much fun when I sold it as it had been when I bought it. I totally agree, if there were no such thing as a Boxster I would have another Miata, the secondby SPG356 - Main Forum

Quotedghii Yes, very limited color choices back then. My first choice would have been red but instead, I purchased the car 'used' with 4000 miles in the spring of 1991. It was an 'A' package and was a great car. I kept it for five years before selling it to a coworker. Off topic, but the only other silver '90 Miata I know of was the Detroit Auto Show car!by SPG356 - Main Forum
Quotedghii This is the 22 year old back when he was almost 3 years old behind the wheel of my 1990 Miata You had a rare car, just like the '55 356 Speedster, the only "official" colors offered in Miata's first year production were Red, White & Blue! Regards,by SPG356 - Main Forum
Andrew, 1) Swapping the remote is easy, just remove the panel. If you move and need to reprogram the remote, it can actually be done right in the car if your garage door motor is compatible. If you sell the car and want to remove the switch and remote, just do so and replace the switch with a dummy switch. 2) The switch does in fact work on a two button remote and open both doors; that is howby SPG356 - Main Forum
I know this does not directly answer your question, but...... I used a 996 Targa switch (the graphic on it looks like a garage door going up and down) that replaced one of the dummy switches next to the climate control. I wired it to the guts of a hand held remote that was programmed to my garage door, and powered it +12v to the car. The guts of the remote are placed inside the panel that holdby SPG356 - Main Forum
QuoteJohn99Boxster I did a search and found only one posting that pointed to the fuel door as the culprit. However it did not address fixing the problem It is not clear what you did at the fuel door, but could be the fuel door lock actuator that is located inside the right front fender liner. When they go bad they make a horrible noise. The part is about $50 at the dealer and takes about anby SPG356 - Main Forum
Grant, I went ahead and installed my original set of winter tires just to see if they were as "bad" as I remembered. It snowed today and they worked great, the wiggly feeling is much slighter than I remember, and probably due to the sipes in the tread more than anything. Maybe I was just itching to spend some money, but you guys saved me quite a bundle as I will just stick with what I've got fby SPG356 - Main Forum
Thanks Boxsterra, I will hold off on buying these. Do you have any guidance on what would be the "right" tire vs a "wrong" tire. At the very least I still have a set of one-season old tires that had good traction regardless of the feeling at the rear. Sebastianby SPG356 - Main Forum
Grant, thank you for the info on all of this. Boxsterra, I hear you about traction and narrow tires, but I would give up a little bit of traction to get rid of the unstable feeling of the narrower rear tire. I did not slip much at all last year, but boy was it squirrely to drive and I attribute that to the narrower width of the rear tires. I did find a 255/40r17 winter tire today and I think Iby SPG356 - Main Forum
Thanks Grant, I appreciate the info. One last question: If I were to find a winter tire in a 255/40 size, I imagine the car would feel more stable like the summer tires that size. Is it a big no-no to have different brands front to rear? Thanks, Sebastianby SPG356 - Main Forum
Greetings, Last year I purchased a set of the General Arctic X winter tires for my '98. The fronts are the same size as my summer tires, but the rears are 225/45 and my summer tires are 255/40. I immediately noticed that the rear of the car did not seem as stable as with the summer tires; the car seemed to "sway" as I would turn the steering wheel at speed. QuoteBoxsterBob - San Carlos Did you consider adding a "core charge"? Bob, He did have a core charge which makes it even more astounding that he would not get them back. I snoozed (put it off for a couple of months) and when I went to place my order for one, it was NLA. Even though I missed out, thanks Pedro for trying to do the right thing!! Guys, Does anyone know if Jeremy at IWireP make his cable for an IPhone 4/CDR220 that plays AND charges? I have left two messages with him and not heard back, so either he is busy, or the answer is "no" and he is tired of all the inquiries about it!! Does anyone know one way or the other for sure?? If he does not make one yet, then I need to move on to plan B. Thanks, Sebastianby SPG356 - Main Forum
