But if the market hates them now, what will it be like to sell them. You buy a hated car to run it into the ground. That way you benefit from the low selling price when buying and get the utility out when using but don't suffer when selling.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
How important is sportiness? Visual appeal? For the next 6 months implies the winter, what kind of weather will you be driving in? Need winter tires? 4WD? Are you planning on selling at the end of 6 months? Thought of the transaction tax/costs? Can you see a older well cared for car with records like I just sold for maybe $4k? Cars are sold for lots of reasons and my wife was just tired of iby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
wife called out 'what is that shaking". Felt down to the desk and sure enough for about 30 seconds. And once out of warranty, why would you worry about voiding the no longer existent warranty with a LN IMS part? It isn't like Porsche is generous about extending the warranty....by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
But the invitation to participate is via online forum postings. Isn't there a probability that more of the folks reading online forums are there because they had a problem? And isn't there a greater probability of participation if you have something to report (a problem) than if you don't? I know in my case there were sometimes years in between anything worth reporting. And I'm sure I delayed mby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
and you'd want a warning if any of those were to start shedding pieces...though as you say they fortunately don't as often as the part under discussion. And the IMS sheddings can exist in the pan where they are exposed to the magnet as well as in the filter. To me it is easier to look at the plug than the oil filter media. The problem is still the inspection interval. Neither inspection is aby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I've participated in the survey. I've been one of the trouble free...heck almost expense free ... statistics. But when you post an invitation to participate, you get a disproportionate number of people with an agenda to participate. And when the sample is as small as it is, that selection bias influences any meaning the statistics you derive from the information might have. is ferrous. Only thing that sheds ferrous particles inside the engine. The magnetic drain plug does see enough of the particles for them to collect on the plug's magnets. Only problem is you have to inspect the magnetic plug at the right time while the bearing has just begun to shed and before it has vibrated itself to death. And who knows what the right time is. Is it 100 miles after the laby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
There are horror stories of the poor fit and finish and the effort necessary to get the Zeintop looking good. Many have pursued the original designer and maker over orders where cash was accepted but no product delivered. And there have been rumors of someone buying the molds and planning to bring back production. They seem to surface every 6 months or so but always seem to turn out to be rumorsby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
But the maintainer that goes through the lighter only works to maintain, it doesn't charge. It detects a very narrow range of voltages in which it attempts to bring the battery back up to full charge. And if your battery is dead, the voltage is liable to be well below that threshold. The wiring to the lighter is not robust enough to attempt a full charge or jump through the battery to the starteby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Oh I don't know that it can't be detected. Maybe not today. But there are people who are trying very hard to prove that IMS bearing failure can be detected in the early stages and the engine saved in enough time that only the IMS bearing needs replacement. They are using a many decades proven approach. There is a difference in the 2005 engine and the 2008...just price the IMS bearing replacemenby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Back in the days when Boxsters had mechanical dipsticks, you could visually tell just how far down into the engine the oil would pool after a fill. Now you can't. As Pedro says, none would be in the tube that leads from the filler cap/lid down towards the engine after you had run for a while as gravity would have it down in the engine. That tube runs perhaps the length of your arm. Which is notby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
The phrase "no visible sign of oil at all in the the oil well in the boot of the car" would worry me. Since you have no dipstick, and weren't told to use the electronic oil level feature, I'm not sure how they could say that. But in any case I'd be asking lots of questions and asking for (as Mark suggested) a longer warranty in writing even if the extension was from the dealership and not Porsby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I bring the crush ring, filter, oil and even an extra clean drain plug. They add ~$35 in labor and the use of their lift. I stand there and watch. I take any extra oil home with me along with the dirty oil plug in a baggie. I drive away with clean hands and clothes. Has worked for years...no drips. I check the level after the 10 mile trip home. I live in a labor market where turnover is low soby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
when the pricing is done at a certain planned run rate. If you then sell 50% or 100% more than you figured, most of the overhead already got absorbed in the planned units so the increase in unit sales is disproportionately/wonderfully profitable.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Based on the "worn tire" sales line done without measurement? Based on the $15 patch? That isn't the charge for a quality inside and out patch where I go. Did they rebalance the tire? Bet they didn't for that price. So why the confidence in this shop?by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
done by someone who only understands that he has to get the numbers in spec and someone who understands what settings at one end of the spec do versus settings at the other end...both approved by Porsche specs. Took out both fenders and the hood. Hard enough so that the frame was flexed back behind the doors. And still no deploy. Nor did there need to be as there was no damage to me at all. Not even a stiff neck. Yes Boxsters are crushable.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I insure my autos big time because, if there is a claim, I want there to be no question that I am entitled to full coverage from the insurance company. Thus I am super careful to fully disclose, report everything, give honest estimates of miles per year, cost of cars, etc. Suppose the worst happens, would I want to have to pay millions to have saved $1k? But the paid was in the bad old days where everything wasn't linked and where I could be sure the insurance company wasn't going to learn of my involvement. Once collected cash three times for the same fender within a month. But that was 50 years ago. One on a white Lincoln with a gouged quarter panel I was preparing for an estate sale. Not truly white and the shop actually painted and then rejected their own work and repainted until it met their standards. I couldn't tell. They had a devil of a time because there was some rose in the paint hue and no amount of computer matching would get it right, it took trial and error.
