I decided to est how the level display works under various conditions. So i just walked into the (medium cold) garage and checked the level. It displayed, despite not being warm. I suspect it stored the last good measurement and somehow knows the car has not moved (but could have leaked, let's not go there). Next I want to drive it, and park it on an incline and see what i get. Some mechanicby grant - Main Forum
I have PSS9s in my track rat (2000 S). I actually find it quite acceptable on all but the worst roads. I am even thinking of further stiffening it. I'm also not sure that the adjust ability in PSS9s is a good thing overall. I believe it gives many wrong possibilities ....by grant - Main Forum
to your finished product. Why the ride height increase/ was it really slammed? Did you replace it with something else for the track? Grantby grant - Main Forum
.. confidence- inspiring. I fear many things. Over-filling (how much drained out?) Under filling (could it go somewhere? Well.. anything's possible [1]. I just find it ridiculous that the oil level, as measured, non-level and all, cannot be displayed. and i suspect there is a secret work around if only i knew how to access it. 1 from C&D 1 from MIT 1 from DoE all agree. All look at the cost and environmental impact at many stages across the life cycle - mining & manufacturing (vehicle, batteries); generation cost, conversion to work. Its quite the significant break-even analysis. he up front impact is large. The running benefits, even if its, say, coal, are positive. But they have a large sunk impact to oveby grant - Main Forum
Assume oil is fully drained and consequently car is cold. You calculated, guess and add fresh oil, prime he filter cannister, etc. now.....i what? Without staring the car?by grant - Main Forum
The electronic dipstick does not register at all - simply provides an error message until: 1. fully warmed up (something like > 175 degF) 2. Level surface 3. trunk/hatch latched There is NO WAY to get any measurement at all until you have driven the car. Simple on a 986 or 987.by grant - Main Forum
no gush. Just the ever slower drip. I suspect the retained oil was due to the slight angle my car was on (backed up onto ramps). That would account for some significant portion of the 0.5L. No biggie, is 15/16ths changed. Gby grant - Main Forum
.. i didn't test the "trunk open" lockout, since i had to drive the car to warm it up anyway. I did test it with the oil at 80, 100 and 120 degrees (F). No go.by grant - Main Forum
I even wonder if there is some double secret way to measure it that only dealers know. I need to ask....by grant - Main Forum
Oh, the physical job is not tough at all, aside form the fact that the filter is waaaaay up there. Much like M96 / 986 oil change. But ......... The lack of a dipstick is a serious issue IMO. This is now combined with an oil measurement system that will only work if the car is a) fully warm, b) level and c) hatch closed. Does anyone else see a problem here? There is no way to confirm that yoby grant - Main Forum
I had the AS/4 (years ago). Nice quite tire. Yawwwwwwwnnnnn. This was on my Audi s6. unless you drive in snow.... The BFGs i suggested are n fact Michelin's other brand. Are they as nice as the Michelins? Now. But they are better in cold and 70% of the price and have a treadwear of 300by grant - Main Forum
... i do know that many mechanics like both Cooper and General; and General is basically Continental USA. Tire rack had some with attractive prices relatively speaking that you might dig a bit further into. Gby grant - Main Forum
Its is moderately priced, solid quality (Michelin), winter /snowflake rated (not an AS tho), decent treadwear. I even have quite a few track days on them as rain tires. I am not commenting on tires that are awful in terms of wear or wet. Certainly not RE-71R (which i run year round on my boxster, unless i decide to put on 16" snows) or Pilot Sport Comp (on my GT4) territory; a bit below the Mby grant - Main Forum

that's way within spec and very normal. However - changes in consumption are typically not good. yes, the edge 5w40 is supposedly very good - per specs, per the guy who formulated it, and i have used it. Then again, both he and Audi's "tech support of last resort" both think most oils are fine - just make sure you have the right amount, right weight, and change it enough that its neither brokenby grant - Main Forum
needs more explanation When the motor wore out (didn't fail per se, but zippo compression), i built, with a local shop, a 3.4L race motor with hardened liners (nickis) JE pistons, Carillo rods, etc. Its not that fast, since its an early S with the super slow feedback loop on the FI, but it torque y and supposedly durable. That said it burns a TON of oil, especially at the track. Rings and boreby grant - Main Forum
My 986 now has about 77,000 miles, including about 50-75 track days (those ended long aga) when i built a track car) and maybe 75-100 autocross days. Its still my autocross competitive car (classes well). I bought it new, with a 5.5 year long extended warranty (long story). Here's the deal: i never collected one penny. In fact it was never back to the dealer, except to say hi, ever. Nothing brby grant - Main Forum
I did a little sleuthing. I will also reach out to my moles in the labs (exxonmobil and BPL). The new Mobil1 ESP meet's Porsche's going forward C40 standard but explicitly not backward compatible with A40. I need to read the data more carefully to guess why. the simple answer is, of course, "because Porsche says so". The replacement for the old Mobil1 0W40 is called FS. It meets Porsche A40.by grant - Main Forum

Hi all, I finally found a new image hosting site (tinypic is no more). Here is the inside of my 986 key. You can see two microswitches that sit under the plastic pushbuttons. There are typically 3 switches - doors/alarm, frunk and trunk. I simply "stole" the trunk switch and placed it where the defunct main switch was (top, center). Pres-to :-) Most switches i see are 3.5mm high to topby grant - Main Forum
the problem is that most switches are far too "high" (base to top of switch plunger)- 3.5 or 4mm rather than 2.25ish as needed. If they fit i will make available onsey-twosey here. I need to find a new photo hosting site but will post picture of what i did. Grantby grant - Main Forum
... observations for others. I did take a gamble an ordered 10 microswitches that look very close from ebay 10/$4 shipped Gby grant - Main Forum
but i cant say for sure for that device.by grant - Main Forum
impact the bulb, but not the housing It will give off all 30W to its environment somehow. The question is how hot the device itself gets. So these ought to be safe if all the specs are the same. Gby grant - Main Forum
