Have been "lock-free" ever since we broke one of the key during a Summer/Winter tire change. Can see if the car has expensive aftermarket rims/wheels, but definitely more of a PIA than they are worth for stock wheels. Get some nice chrome bolts and call it a day. We have been using these from Boothe Design and they have held up well for over six years:by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
We have had them since June. Great Summer tires. The Hankooks were a bit noisy, but with the top down, who cares? Also, can't beat the price!!! Switched them out in November for some WinterForce in anticipation for a snowy winter. Will put them back on in late April/early May. The next thing to see is how many seasons will they last.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Thank you for all the great conversations in 2012. We look forward to another enjoyable year here on PedrosBoard!!!by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
It would be a pretty interesting way to watch football :-)by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Reading that article kind of got me a bit worked up. Imagine if a Porsche dealer or the Mothership tries something like that? That is just not right.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Thanks for the info! I did pick up a bolt at the dealer...just $5. Picked up the PB Blaster at Home Depot. Will check around for the Helicoil.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Almost all of the bolt is still in (perhaps 2-3mm out?) when the head broke off. However, I am tempted to try extracting the rest. What size heli-coil/ timesert did you use? Can't seem to find the actual spec for the caliper bolt...12mm, but not sure of the thread count.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum

If I actually HAD a garage to work in, I would probably give it a try. However, if I mess it up, getting the car to the dealer would then be a real PITA.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
None of the independent shops I went to today was willing to drill it out due to the fact that the knuckle (wheel bearing assembly) is aluminum. The dealer offer to put a new knuckle on for $1000...which was actually a lot cheaper than another quote I got from an independent. Guess there was not much of a savings on this rotor DIY :-)by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
That makes more sense. I did know the different pieces (compression, knocking, etc), but did not have it all straight in my head as a logical whole. Will check out the article and get a clearer understanding. Thanks!!!by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Yeah...going to ping the dealer today. Looks like the monthly trip to NYC is going to have to wait :-) Would have been a nice drive this weekend!by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Have wondered about that...so will give Pedros' experiment a go and see if we can detect an MPG difference.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
I have wondered about that and it was on the "list." Will give this a try with the next tank. Currently, there is a huge difference between MPG for city and highway driving. Around Boston (how the car is used 90% of the time) the MPG is around 12. On the highway (to/from NYC and road trips w/ highway driving) the MPG is about 22-23. Wonder if the cleaner burn will help. It should be an interesby RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
I know. That is what I was reading as well. It was stated by the tech that looked at it. I'm going back today to chat with the garage owner to see why they didn't think they could do it. Will also check with the dealer. Pretty sure they must have seen this in the past. There is no way I'm going to replace the whole structure (quote was $1700) for this :-) The upside is the caliper is still secuby RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
They are saying that there isn't much room to work and is hinting that they may have to replace the entire wheel bearing housing. Seems kind of extreme to me. Will probably try other solutions before it comes to that.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Have been running on 87 octane no-name for the past 7 years...have not notice any difference.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Got through replacing 3 of the 4 of the rotors...the bolts on the fourth caliper just would not move. After trying for a while, finally got it to move a bit at a time...then a loud snap. The head of the bolt broke clean off. Didn't think I could do that with muscle alone!!! Good thing my neighborhood mechanic is just a few blocks away (the benefit of living in a city :-)) Thought it was time tby RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Bought one used in 2000 for $2K and never regreted it....have used it every Winter since. Paid the asking price only because Winter was coming, the color matched, and it was in "like new" condition. After 12 years of use, the top is still in awesome shape...and had not thought about the purchase price until now :-) So if you see one you like and will use it every winter, our advice is to think lby RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
The noise has been getting louder and more frequent. Sounds like the driver side radiator fan is about to go. Anyone replaced one of those before? If so, how tough was the job?by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Had a problem with the following symptoms in 2009... The car started when cold, ran for about 10-15 minutes, then die. After which, turning the key would be met with silence. The car started up again after an hour or so...while we were trying to find a tow truck. The problem turned out to be the crankshaft position sensor.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
The last one failed in less than two years. At least Porsche refunded the cost of the part, but it didn't make being stranded on the way back from NYC any less of a PITA. However, if one had to breakdown on RT95, best to do it 3 miles from Fairfield Porsche...they really took care of this out-of-towner a week before Christmas. Had the car back in 2 days.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Boston is not a parking-friendly city. We got our Boxster in 2000 and do have a private driveway, but no garage. So in the Winter, the car will look like this when it snows...: After 12 years, the finish is still in great condition as most of the time it was under the Porsche all-weather cover. We switch to Blizzaks in November and to PZeros in May. That may change as it seems to be impossibleby RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
Thanks for the tip! Will check it out next week.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
When to two shops with Hunter equipment (JP, Dedham) and both were unable to do the alignment because they did not have the right adapters for the Boxster wheels (2000 Boxster, stock 16" wheels). Just wondering if there are any recommendations.by RainyDayGarage - Main Forum
