Just for the thrill of extra acceleration in a straight line blast. How quickly does a tank of nitrous get used up when you press the button?by marty - Main Forum
Does anyone have experience of fitting a nitrus kit to a Boxster? These things are not very common here in the UK. The very idea of it brings up loads of questionsby marty - Main Forum
A couple of the steel heat shield sections, on the exhaust of my 1999 Boxster have developed rattles. I have clamped the loose ends with jubilee clips, which has stopped the rattles. Just how important are these heat shields? Is it OK to carefully remove them?by marty - Main Forum
I have traced the rain water leak into my passenger foot-well, to the seal around the steel cover that the air-con pipes pass through. The bottom edge of the cover has rusted and a rusty stain is clearly visible in the foot-well under the carpet. I have tried to scrape flaky bits of rust off the cover but with the pipes etc in the way I'm struggling. My plan is to press gas tank sealing puttyby marty - Main Forum
There is a flexible foam piece which partly covers the air filter then a big plastic top cover with a hole for the washer bottle.by marty - Main Forum
Having spent an hour with the vacume I believe one of the drain holes beneath the air-con connections might have been restricted. We had very heavy rain a week or so ago. Perhaps the one drain couldn't cope? The wetness is beneath the removable plastic backed foot mat, so the water must have got through the bulkhead somewhere and gone beneath the fitted carpet. In your experience would a blocby marty - Main Forum
I have a rain water leak into the left side foot well in my British right hand drive '99 Box 2.5. It's coming from under the dash board above where your feet rest. It's not the door seal, as I replaced that last year and the carpet from the door seal downwards is dry. The drain hole under the hood in the compartment to the side of the battery is clear. Any ideas as to the culprit please beforby marty - Main Forum
Thanks Grant. Hopefully by the time the rears need changing, I'll have forgotten what a pain it was to do the fronts!by marty - Main Forum
I have just finished fitting new front wheel bearings to my'99 Box. What an arm aching job, even with a four foot extension tube! After I removed the brake caliper the failed bearing was clearly audible when you spun the hub. Only one side had failed as I suspected, but I changed both sides anyway. I pulled the wheel carrier off with a slide hammer. Even after a good heating with a blow torcby marty - Main Forum
Thanks for the info. I've ordered new bearings but still need to order a threaded puller tool.by marty - Main Forum
I'm about to purchase a 32mm, long type socket to use in replacing my front wheel bearings. I've been offered one which is meant for an air gun. It has 6 rounded flats which grip on the sides of the nut rather than the corners. Is this type better than a flat sided 6 or 12 point type? I'll be using it with a long breaker bar, not an air gun.by marty - Main Forum
Would anyone have the bearing size (or FAG part number) for the front wheel bearings on a 1999 2.5L 986 please?by marty - Main Forum
Unfortunatly I don't know anyone I could borrow a set of wheels from. I did consider swoping the wheels from side to side. I wouldn't drive in the wet, as the tires are directional. As any feathering would then be rotating backwards the wear pattern of the rubber shouldn't make the same noise?by marty - Main Forum
They are Goodyear F1 Eagles. I replaced them 7 years ago and they have done approx 22.5k miles.by marty - Main Forum
I will try and find a big, smooth dirt or grass carpark (parking lot) and see if I still get the noise at 30mph.by marty - Main Forum
I have spent some time reading about other people's experience of worn tire noise. I found a guy on a motoring forum who described my noise and the circumstances which produce it to a tee. He changed wheel bearings and CV joints. Turned out to be his worn tires! The general consensus seems to be that if a tire has a sharp edged feel when you run your hand around it against the direction of roby marty - Main Forum
Thanks for the help. Did the recording suggest a cause? Reving, cornering, shifting to neutral have no effect on the noise. Increasing the car's speed with the engine at idle makes the noise louder. Slowing down reduces it.by marty - Main Forum
I have recorded my whining noise as a WAV type file: View My Video It was recorded while coasting down a steep hill in neutral with the engine at idle. I reached 50mph then braked gently to a stop. Touching the brakes has no effect on the noise. Any clues please?by marty - Main Forum
I have borrowed an MP3 recorder and will try and record the noise tonight and post a link tomorrow. If it turns out to be the carrier taper bearings in the diff (which support the short shafts to the main drive shafts) that are worn, should I get it sorted straight away? Is it a job that can be done at home with the car on wheel ramps? Having searched the net for people with similar noises, Iby marty - Main Forum
I tried pressing the clutch and it has no effect on the noise. I get this noise in gear and when coasting. As my Goodyear F1 Eagle tyres have been on for several years could they be the culprit?by marty - Main Forum
I've just been driving and I think whistling is not quite the right description of the sound. It's more of a mechanical whine.by marty - Main Forum
Right, just checked the bonnet (hood). The leading edge is below the top of the bumper cover. I loosened the +head screws under the wide plastic trim and pushed the bumper cover back as far as it will go. It was already right back. What do a wheel bearing or trans axle sound like when they go bad?by marty - Main Forum
Over the last couple of months I've noticed a slight low pitched whistling noise. It gets louder with speed ie. rolling down hill in neutral with the engine ticking over. It does seem to be getting louder with time. With the top up or down I'm not able to identify where it's coming from. My manual '99Box has done 99k miles, has the original wheel bearings, the discs and pads are good all rounby marty - Main Forum
I have used Autoglym two part soft top cleaner and water proofer for years. Even with a good scrubbing and rubbing there are always small patches of green algae remaining. Can anyone recommend a method to shift it? Has anyone dared to use a pressure washer on the soft top? I worry that it might de-laminate the outer from the inner layer.by marty - Main Forum
I carry my Border Collie in my Boxster a lot. I have fitted the Porsche child seat rail, plugged it in and paid an independent dealer to activate it. When I plug an old seat belt clip a warning light flashes to say the air-bag has been de-activated. I have a nylon seat cover and a soft fabric lined picnic blanket for Frosty to sit on. He wears a car harness which fastens to the main seat beltby marty - Main Forum
My water pump failed big time last year and I had to have the car flat-bedded home. I replaced the pump myself with the car on tall home made ramps. A very awkward finger scraping job. I also fitted a new belt, new ball races in the pulleys and bottom hoses. The pulley bearings are easy to push out using a decent vice and a lot cheaper than complete pulley assemblies from Porsche. This Youtube clip shows a simple way to attach the rope:by marty - Main Forum
Here in central UK we have had a decent fall of snow over the last few days. When I couldn't get my Box' off the drive this morning I used the poly rope trick to get traction. This is old trick but new to me so I thought I'd share it in case it helps others: Take some 1/4" dia poly rope and wrap it through the wheel at each spoke position to form a simple snow chain. It lasts only long enoughby marty - Main Forum
