Thanks for the instructions Pedro. Just carefully pulled the glass assembly out. One of the white nylon push-rod balls had come out ,so I snapped it back in. Seems to work OK again now. Isn't this internet thing brilliant! A guy in sunny Florida can help a bloke in the snowy middle of England in minutes! Cheers!by marty - Main Forum
On my 1999 Box' the passenger side wing mirror glass has developed free movement within the housing. If I gently push on the bottom half, it re-aligns with the motor setting position and the motor will move it in one direction, but not back again. You can rock the glass up and down through approx. 5 degrees but not from left to right. Can anyone please explain or show photos, of how the mirrorby marty - Main Forum
Just to be clear, the noise is only present when the car is moving. The faster the car, the more noise there is. Revving the engine has no effect. What does a failing wheel bearing sound like? The car has recently passed it's annual MOT test, so there can't be detectable play in the wheel. Could it be from a CV joint on the half shaft?by marty - Main Forum
After sitting for a week un driven in wet cold conditions, my '99 Box (97k miles) has developed an intermittent noise, from what seems to be the RH rear wheel area. The noise sounds like a plastic bag or leaves caught under the car. It starts once I've covered a couple of miles and usually while turning right, carrying a bit of speed. It does it in neutral with the engine ticking over. Once iby marty - Main Forum
I fitted the new pump last week and so far so good... Had to add coolant as the system purged it's self though. Treated the car to a brake fluid change too! Cheers for your help Marc. It's nice to know we are not alone when things go wrong!by marty - Main Forum
Also - I can feel a bit of play in the two fixed jocky roller bearings. Should I replace these?by marty - Main Forum
Thanks for the valued advice Marc. Can you advise me the flow directions from the attached photo please from the coloured arrows? I pray to be able to reverse flush the system by connecting my garden hose to one of the big hoses near the water pump? As I have the car on high ramps, I can't get under the front to remove the bumper to access the rads. [by marty - Main Forum
I have just removed the water pump. What a struggle to get the socket on some of the bolts! The bearing and seal have gone BIG TIME, the impeller is broken and the vanes have been worn down. Any tips on trying to flush any impeller debris out of the system?by marty - Main Forum
My '99Box suffered a sudden coolant leak yesterday while driving at approx. 60mph. I had the car flat bedded back home and I have searched for the source of the leak. It seems the water pump seal has failed. Is it normal for Boxster water pump seals to fail so dramatically? Their has been no gradual water loss or any squeal from the bearing.by marty - Main Forum
When I replaced the MAF sensor I checked all the rubber was tight (i striped cleaned the throttle and idle valve last summer), fitted the new Bosch MAF - and crossed my fingers! So far, one week on the intermittent rough idle problem has gone and the car revs out cleanly. So I feel it was money well spent. Had a good blast out in the country to go paragliding yesterday. After having a problem with my Box' refusing to rev to the red line, I followed the excellent advice of you guys, cleaned the MAF sensor and disconnected the battery to re-calibrate it. Things have worked fine till recently. Once the motor is almost up to normal temp. it sometimes idles erratically, sometimes stalling. It re-starts OK and doesn't do it again. As I don't like stalling at roadby marty - Main Forum
When driving round say a hair-pin right hand bend quickly, I hear a noise from the inside back wheel. It only does it on right handers and sounds a bit like it's coming from the steel disc cover plate. There is nothing loose that I can feel. Could I have a wheel bearing grumbling?by marty - Main Forum
Ahhh! It now makes sense! I shall take your advice re the non Bosch MAF. If (when...!) the flat spot/misfire returns I will get a genuine part. Thanks ever-so-much for your help and advice. I love my Box. again now! Marty.by marty - Main Forum
The first few minutes the low rev power had flat spots. This I put down to the ECU "learning" the cleaned MAF. I kept things gentle and as it warmed up and I gradually increased the revs. The flat spots went and it was smooth and normal. Once the motor was warm I floored it in 3rd gear. Straight to and into the red line! Repeated tries in other gears were fine too. I held it at 5500rpm andby marty - Main Forum
I have now cleaned and replaced the MAF. The voltage to the plug is 4.9V and doesn't fluctuate when you rev the engine. I disconnected the battery for an hour or so. I will take the Box. for a test drive this evening and try red lining it under/off load when warmed up. This may be of some consequence: Recently while replacing the alum. gaskets between the exhaust manifolds and the cat. flangby marty - Main Forum
Thanks for the wonderful help! I will try to answer your questions to provide you with accurate symptoms. 1) When I drove this morning the low revs flat spot was gone. My journey was short, and by the time the temp. was up to 80deg I could only try to red line it in 1st gear. It reved out with no flat spots. Could the ECU have taken a while to alter settings yesterday once it detected the nby marty - Main Forum
As I said in my previous thread I have replaced all 6 coils & plugs to try and cure a misfire and refusal to rev to the red line. I cleared the codes with my reader. All 6 old coils had splits and cracks in the plastic cases. It doesn't misfire now but there is a big yawning power flat spot when you hold your foot down. If you lift slightly the revs rise and the car surges forward then thby marty - Main Forum
I have purchased and fitted six new coil packs and spark plugs today, and cleared the error codes with my reader. I will let you know if this cures it. My local independant guy put his Porsche laptop on the car and got the same codes as my reader. He says coil packs regularly crack and fall to bits! Fingers crossed now!by marty - Main Forum
The only recent thing was I had the joint between the exhaust manifold and the CAT flange fail. It was prob. blowing slightly for weeks, then went LOUD! I fixed this straight away then. This was on the US passenger side of the car.by marty - Main Forum
My 1999 2.5 Box wouldn't rev past 5500rpm and missfired today. I plugged OBC reader in and got the codes: P0300, P0304, P0305 & P0306. The car has done 90k miles. I have not yet changed the MAF sensor. Do these codes point at this sensor? Am I OK to still drive the car while I find the cause?by marty - Main Forum
I have finally fitted new front springs and new shocks. Once I elected to separate the hub carriers from the lower control arms, things got a lot easier! Thanks Pedro for the advice. My home made laser tracking set-up comprises for each wheel: 3/4" MDF board half the size of the wheel rim, with three adjustable turned plugs. Each board has a small shelf with a cheap laser pointer attached,by marty - Main Forum
Yes I will. I have made my own laser set-up.by marty - Main Forum
Yes. I have changed both over the last few years. And the rear long trailing arms. ANd the front engine mount. And the anti-roll bar bushes. And the drop links! Removing one of the pins holding the suspension tower into the hub carrier is proving to be a right Royal pain in the a*$...! Hammering (sledge) with a drift has only moved it 3/4". Hope to try heating the carrier and using a longby marty - Main Forum
After tapping the front suspension components with a hide mallet I found a horse shoe size portion of broken coil spring! I have ordered a new pair and hope to fit them with the struts still attached at the bottom.by marty - Main Forum
No, I don't have a hard top.by marty - Main Forum
I have removed the broken cable parts and been for a test drive. The clunking sound now seems to come from the front passenger side suspension unit........! I have replaced both L & R lower control arms with the ball joint. Could it be the arm which connects to this?by marty - Main Forum
Whether this has any relevance but one of the short 10" long cables with snap ball couplings, between the folding roof and the inside of it's stowage compartment has snapped.by marty - Main Forum
The Clunk only happens while driving when you hit a rough bit of road. The Bump shows up when parked and pushing down inside the rear trunk.by marty - Main Forum
Overnight my '99 Box has developed a loud clunking noise when I hit a pot-hole in the road. If I push down inside the rear trunk while parked up I hear a bumping sound. I get this even with each side of the car supported on a jack. I can detect no play in any of the suspension linkages or shocks and the exhaust heat shields are secure. I replaced the two long trailing arms last year along witby marty - Main Forum
