how something you wrote probably 5 years ago still has life. Larry, the stuff on installing an Optima is here. No idea if the special mounting adapter guy referenced is still in business. The list of batteries is kinda old as it hasn't been updated in years but Pedro is right in the reverse of the posts bit being important. Also the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) of the TIP and manual trans cars arby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

until everything was warm for emissions reasons? The idea being to get everything in the cooling system to a steady warm state before you turn on the fans so you don't run rich as long.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
especially expensive items for which there is little or no statistical evidence on how often the problem you are thinking of fixing occurs or when in the engine's life it will occur, I have come to think that it is as much an emotional conclusion as a scientific one that informs the decision for most of us. If there are 25+ failure modes that would take out an engine, why are we trying to fix oby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
With the glass window version a one time thing. Try to buy a top and frame from a wreck of a '03-'04 is another option.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Happened to be on Ebay the other day and sorted Boxster by highest price. The top 2 were new Spyders. All the talk about sound reminds me of some other car brand forums I read and the comments about cars that no one has really seen in the wild yet. Lots of pre-production bad mouthing from the owners of the current model, but when the car is actually at the dealers the noise subsides.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

as the story now is that priority goes to those who have already bought another of the $70k to $140k Tesla's models. Performance is known, range is known, even space is known. Test drives for selected reporters in the pre-production cars have been done. A Tesla doesn't fit my needs/wants. But I'm glad someone is shaking up the automotive status quo.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I had a Noah fabric cover that protected from rain, 10" of snow, 1" of ice, bird droppings and chestnuts. Good as new after 5 years of winter use. California car covers IIRC.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
No federal tax credits after yesterday's orders is the current guess. And you think the wait for a Porsche is long, maybe get one in 2019 if you order now with your $1k deposit.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Chevy Wagon bought as a 100 miles demo and 10 years later rust emerges and an investigation reveals prior repair work. No sense in complaining after that long. I've also seen a guy pull up in a van and out in the open on the dealer's lot he begins spray painting bumpers on new cars where they needed it. And not just a few cars.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
because the turbos on the base and S 718s are different. You could have dozens of possible head to head comparisons just in the P-car ranges. In the end imagine how you will use it, what will the probability of passengers, probability of 2 people's stuff for a weekend away, what other options to you have in making that trip. had a PPI done by a trusted and well reputed mechanic and then did what was recommended. Exactly what I did for my second Boxster and it had wonderful reliability for the next 5 years of ownership. I budgeted in the costs the PPI told me would be needed and considered if I'd pay that much total for the car in that condition. I sometimes tell people that my Boxsters experiences were wonderful but that they are worth little in predicting what theirs will be like. Too small a sample. The choice of how much preventative maintenance to do is often a matter of personality and risk tolerance. Well bank account too. No reason your choice should be mine.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
given that you are in PA. Mine ('70 with every option around $3600) was so difficult to maintain (despite me working 4 blocks from the dealer) that I sold it a week before the 2 year warranty ran out to a young doctor from Philadelphia. Around $2300 as I recall. Next up '70 BMW 2002. That was before I knew the 914 was prone to rust. And I did run it 365 days a year with frequent winter tripsby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

Two things that struck me from the article. One, the huge proportion of total group profits that Porsche and Audi contribute compared to their sales volume. Two, the VW Golf platform based vehicles are available with over 110 variations of steering wheel. And we think the Boxster has a long option list! How Porsche marketing milks every anniversary, nameplate or bit of nostalgia. Discontinue a color, call it a "Porsche exclusive" option, paint to order, etc. The permutations are endless. No wonder they cost so much. Love that color Roger.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
And no the ~$30k motor isn't a race engine, just a very powerful fully rebuilt with all improved parts version designed to be a daily driver. I only offered it as an upper boundary. with the used motor to show how the math could change (There is someone who bought one.)by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Or I can make the math work the other way with a $30k US engine. Not sure it is a math driven decision. Pocketbook and emotion.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
One has to be careful when describing things like probability of problems or failure rates to specify which they are talking about. A 3rd generation bearing as in the '08 is the best of the 3 and the one that is the most cost to replace. So much better and costlier that few are replaced.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
The lawsuit was years ago and worked out to about 1% per car year then. And I think Pedro's extrapolation from those figures make sense for the single row. Is the cumulative probability of the other 20 something failure modes greater than that of the IMS? I have no data but would guess it might be. How much to spend on preventative maintenance is something that, after owning about 50 cars, stilby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

aftermath leavings after a crash done in modern cars. Things like front wheel making a dent in the drivers seat, or the engine sheering off and being driven under the passenger compartment after the car launched into the air, hit a tree about 6 feet off the ground and flew over a fire hydrant only to land ass end first. In both cases the occupants climbed out on their own. OTOH, the old cars weby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
