Glad it worked out. I took a lot of time researching the problem, with no definitive answer. Some people spent thousands replacing all the solenoid valves, carbon canister, etc. with no results. But when I pinched off the hose from the purge valve connecting to the throttle body and everything was fixed, I took a chance on the purge valve and that was it.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Take a look at this thread, I just went through this. [986forum.com]by San Rensho - Main Forum
If you are really worried about a dry start, pull the fuel pump fuse and crank the motor until the oil pressure light goes out. Now you know oil has circulated through the engine. Put the fuse back in and start it up.by San Rensho - Main Forum
QuoteBruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) If you don't know the torque spec to tighten a bolt, and you have a digital torque wrench, can you "figure out" what the torque value is by loosening the bolt with the digital wrench and reading what value it was to move the bolt? BTW, I just received my Brownline digital torque wrench...... and I have an active imagination.... oh oh... bad thinby San Rensho - Main Forum
Hey, we're suffering here in Miami. I had to use the AC today it was so hot.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Jack up the car, take a crowbar and lever al the major suspension members, except the drop links and Tie rod ends that you cantest by hand to see if they are loose. If nothing seems loose, bang hard on the suspension members with a rubber mallet. If something is bad, you will hear a clunk.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Why does this style of ostensibly 2 seat race car have the drivers seat on the right. Is it a Brit thing?by San Rensho - Main Forum
Splain me how the horizontal baffle works and how it's superior to the products out there that copy the X51 baffle designs.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Real easy guys. Jack up the entire rear end by jacking at the at the rear end of the under tray, where the U shaped support connects to the under tray. Once the rear end is up, jack the front end at the frame rails shown in the Pelican article. I've done this countless times. Once it's up on the jacks, go linebacker on the car, push it as hard as you can, forward, backwards sideways. Alrightby San Rensho - Main Forum
I always use a torque wrench for critical fasteners. Absolutely clean threads, lightly lubricated fasteners and a torque wrench and I have never stripped a fastener, had anything come loose or had anything leak. It's takes a bit more work to clean all fasteners and threads, but it is wel worth the effort.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Lane discipline doesn't exist in south Florida. The left lane is full of idiots who seem to think that because they have an expensive car, they are entitled to drive in the left lane at 54mph. I have found that I can easily go at 80+ in the right hand lane because all the morons are int eh "prestige " left lanes.by San Rensho - Main Forum
It's not a rip off if you pay it willingly. If you are worth 50 million, 28 k is chump change, and many rich guys like to brag that they had to drop a big number on something stupid. I wouldn't feel to sorry for them.by San Rensho - Main Forum
First of all, the bearing will be completely out of the oil with the motor running. Go start your car and using the dipstick with the motor running, measure the oil level. It won't even register on the dipstick. So Pedro is right that you will get no direct oilong of the bearing. But his demo does not simulate real life splash oiling. I don't have a link, but there are several videos out theby San Rensho - Main Forum
Quotegrant ....many are either steel or a harder alloy. Even in the LN case - and i have lots of respect for LN, its hard-anaodized and can damage the softer oil pan. The factory one is designed to be sacrificial. I have in fact sacrificed one already. We have discussed this at length - i assumed the info was already out there.... QuoteBruce In Philly (2000 S Boxster, now '09 C2S) I am doing my own changes now. It is the LN unit, aluminum so it is not really different than the Porsche one. Same torque specs etc. I guess the risk is wiping it into the threads. But the particulates, if there, are so microscopic that I can't see any issue. Peace Bruce in Philly The torque spec is not the same. It's 19 ft-lbs, check theby San Rensho - Main Forum
No codes. Check the crankshaft position sensor. If its intermittent, it will not throw a code but it will shut down the car. Otherwise, check the fuel delivery, a fault there will not svhow acode but will affect drive ability.by San Rensho - Main Forum
I've rarely heard of oversteer on a Boxster, on the contrary, everyone complains that the car pushes, due to the understeer that is engineered into these cars. Loose is generally good. Most racers want oversteer which is much easier to control with throttle and steering inputs than a pushing front end. Maybe it's your driving technique, trail braking, that gets the car loose?by San Rensho - Main Forum
My understanding, and I'm not a rocket surgeon, is that the coil has to generate more power to bridge a longer gap, which lessens the life of the coil.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Change the plugs early and often. As they wear, the gap increases which makes the coils work harder, so if you want the coils to last,z replace the plugs.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Get a replacement screw at almost any auto parts that sell fasteners. Just take one with you and match it up. Quality doesn't matter, its going into aluminum at a very low torque.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Try changing the gear oil. Use only Porsche gear oil. It solves many shift problems. And don't slam the gearshift! The instant before you put the clutch in on the 1-2 shift, apply a small amount of pressure on the shifter towards second, put the clutch in and without applying any more pressure, the tranny will go smoothly into second every time. And I'm not sure that synchros are covered byby San Rensho - Main Forum
It's a good idea to drop the pan because these motors shed sealant throughout their lives and the sealant can clog the pickup tube with disastrous results. Just be sure that you use the absolute minimum of sealant when putting it back together. Less is more. The spec is a 1or 1.5 mm bead.by San Rensho - Main Forum
There's no reason to estimate, according to docs provided by Porsche through discovery, the Failaure rate for double row IMSBs and the post 2005 models is less than 1 percent. The failure rate for single rows is 8-10 percent. The numbers are posted somewhere on rennlist but I can't find the exact post.by San Rensho - Main Forum
I had an Alfa Romeo GTV 6 with no power steering and the feel and feedback were wonderful. If the car was a a dead stop and you tried to turn the wheel, then yes it was very hard, but if you just got the car moving the slightest bit, the steering loosened up and was fine. And by the way, turning the wheel on any car while it is at a dead stop puts a huge strain on the steering and suspension mecby San Rensho - Main Forum
Look on the 986 forum and rennlist and you wil find numerous posts where someone used other than P gear oil and the tranny balked shifting when cold especially into second. I first changed the tranny oil to Mobil 1 and had bad shifting, changed back to P oil and the tranny shifts flawlessly. Want to save 30 bucks and use non P gear oil,be my guest, good luck.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Use only Porsche gear oil. With the bottom plug out, stick you finger in the hole and remove the sludge that has accumulated on the magnet which for some unknown reason, is to one side of the drain hole, instead of being on the drain plug itself. To refill, the best contraption is a mini hand pump that attaches directly to the gear oil bottle. Costs about 10 bucks at popular autoparts stores.by San Rensho - Main Forum
Don't spray it. Use a brush and goober it on.by San Rensho - Main Forum
It works great, for a couple of days or a couple of weeks, but it's not a permanent fix. I live with it because I only hear it a about once a day when I am going up a slight ramp at the entrance to my office parking garage. I think I can live with that.by San Rensho - Main Forum
The stock brake/gas pedal height works really well for heel and toe on the track. On the street, the gas is a bit of a reach because the brake is high, but on the street, everything is so much slower that while heel and toe is a bit of a stretch, its really not a problem at all. I can't see changing the gas pedal to accommodate street driving.by San Rensho - Main Forum
