Reference my original post in another thread, copied below for ease and context. Car 2004 Boxster So, i opened my key up again to look for the trace Stefan mentioned. No bad traces - but (doh!) i forgot another problem i found ages ago and was too busy to followup on. The microswitch (tiny surface mount job) on the board was bad and i had REMOVED it. Duh, it didin't work. I grabbed one of thby grant - Main Forum
... 30 watts is a lo of power to dissipate in such a small area. I design electronics and even 3W will make a small heatsink supid hot in a closed environment. How much heat does the original dissipate? I'd ensure that a) this is below the original and b) i watch them and if things seem amiss, remove them. Have you searched more generally for LED/Halogen replacement? Its not really a porscheby grant - Main Forum
Hi all, The air filters for the 981 Cayman (and boxster?) are long tapered cones. They can fit very tightly and several folks have suggested some magic lubes on them (silicone based in one case). I think a light lube is probably a good idea, but why does it need to be anything special, and not "whatever good grease i have lying around?". Any takers? BTW, after what i presume is 27k miles mineby grant - Main Forum
Hey Stefan, I have a problem with my original key as well. 1.Spare key works great 2 regular key opens and starts car mechanically (so "pill" is good?) 3. regular key remote does not work 4. regular key remote does flash LED I did replace the key body & buttons since they had disintegrated. I thought that might be the issue. If memory serves i did replace the microswitch too (soldered aby grant - Main Forum
I've actually had the beasty for about two weeks. took it on a beautiful PCA rally last Sunday where my nav and I, who won the last Rally outright, managed to miss an early turn within 10 minutes. Still had fun though :-) Aside from enjoying it, i'm now learning how to access the motor, filters, etc. This thing is a beast! Happy Saturday all, Gby grant - Main Forum
remember that a rally good car, with a known service history, is worth much more than the incremental price it will command, while a neglected car is worth less than someone will pay, thinking they are getting a deal. 986s seem to be on the rise. anywhere from $8k to $12K+ if its really good. That car looks sharp and the hard top adds at least $1k Base i presume? Wonderful street and Solo1 caby grant - Main Forum
They were replacing the 0W40 "European car formula" with 5W40 "same" (which for me is a good thing). The real key is to look for Porsche A40 on the back. Or of course, don; worry about it since a significant part of most approvals is paying a fee, filling out paperwork, and going through testing that you have already completed for someone else. The 0W40 was always shaky on the HTHS test that isby grant - Main Forum
When you turn the key to "on" **but do not crank the motor**, do you hear a slight whir? That is the fuel pump. NO? I may not be working. Typically fuel pumps begin to make noise, then fail intermittently, as bad spots in the motor make themselves heard. Agree that two other culprits are known and in fact more common: 1. Hi Laz, and I'll look into it. It seems Rennlist is the place to begin.by grant - Main Forum
I don't actually know, but i would suspect some form of binding. I would look at all the support joints looks for dirt, ensure that they are well lubricated. I would also look for some obstruction - something it needs to "crush" to close. Could even be part of the top hat is not folding properly. or a cable frayed at the very end? Since it eventually gets there, it cannot be the motor or limby grant - Main Forum
Awwww. I lost my Shepherd, Anja years ago, but my buddy's doodle LOVES to ride with her nose above the windshield! thanks for the rennlist tip. I'll go there, search, read, and then ask a bunch of pointed question. Already foudn that access to the serpentine belt, with a harness bar anyway, is a total PITA. Air filters seem needlessly complex too. but its a GT car. All part of the price ofby grant - Main Forum
And you! thanks, i suspect as much and am digging around. My 2004 runs like a new car still. My 2000 track car blew a freeze plug out at 7k at Summit Point. Out apart but not yet fully tested. Motor (rebuilt by me and the shop) 5 years ago looks like new. So its either fine, or if hydro locked, total junk. Cross fingers. Grantby grant - Main Forum
First, Hello, and sorry to have been a stranger. But between work, starting (maybe) another company, Covid (no, not me), track, Autocross, and life, i have not had much in the way of excess time. That said, i appear to be very close to acquiring a 981 GT4, and so far find technical/repair info on it hard to come by. I still have my track rat (2000 986S) and my original Porsche a 2004 Base whichby grant - Main Forum
more likely either: 1. worn/stretched cables, or 2. Lubrication of the ball/shifter (spray lubricant, work it in, WD40 is not a lubricant.by grant - Main Forum
Well, i can't really say. I do recall this working once when the key/car synch was lost due to (I think) a dying battery). But that was > 10 years ago! In any event, neither of the suggestions above worked for me, this time. SO i guess its off to the dealer. Or not use the remote....PITA since the alarm goes off about 10 sec after i opne the door :-) Gby grant - Main Forum
Honestly, I've driven super HP summers in New Jersey winters. Even at 20 deg (F) they are adequate if you realize what you are dealing with. Add some snow and its a totally different story - scary!!!!!!!!. But i have, for instance driven from Bennington VT to Morristown NJ on Christmas day early morning, in my track car (Hi Bruce!) on -- get this -- Bridgestone RE-71Rs. Thanks for both #1 and #2. What i wrote in #2 as exactly what was suggested on a forum. As you note, it is wrong (certainly didn't work). Could I have tried 1024 times? very possible. Fortunately, the battery was effectively out so the car would never know :-) Tomorrow will tell, thanks again. Gby grant - Main Forum
1. The darned overflow tank. but you replaced that. 2. Water pump. First they leak, then they gush. 3. Loose hose clamp or failing hose. Sadly, there are miles of them under there. 4. An ageing radiator. Ask me how I know. I think you would know about a head gasket - that's a LOT of water. So consider that possible good news. I'd bet on the H2O pump Grantby grant - Main Forum
Long time no post! MY00 986S. have a question about how to re-train my key remote to make the car respond. For tow years+, since I tore the car apart and rebuilt the motor, they key works but the remote does nothing. Finally, last night, i began to test it **again**. I noticed that the LED did not light. I took off the cover and pressed the switch button directly. No go. I tested the baby grant - Main Forum
