Pedro's TechnoPower2...reflections after 500+ miles
Kimo - Monday, 16 January, 2012, at 8:11:04 pm
I just recently purchased and installed Pedro's TechnoPower2 (TP2) gadget on my 2.7L TIP 986. First, let me say that Pedro's gadget works as advertised (I don't have a dyno sheet, as a caveat). I recommend the TP2 for any 986 owner...you will not regret the extra power; however, see my before modifications, below, which I would highly suggest to take advantage of additional torque and HP increases from the TP2. If you have no idea what the TP2 is, please go to Pedro's Garage website. Pedro provides you good instructions and a help-line...if you get stuck; it's not that hard, except for one part (below).

Also - Pedro did not have a 2.7L TIP program set up, prior to mine, but he now has it; I was the guinea pig. I made a few recommendations to Pedro to help others out during installation. Although, Pedro is just a call away if you need him to talk you through; he's extremely helpful.

Reflections after 500 miles of test/grin "varied" driving (and no CEL):
- definite gains in torque (seat-of-pants dyno - but the obvious torque increase is enough to dismiss the money-out-of-wallet dyno effect). My Boxster is my daily driver, so I definitely notice any changes. Believe me, it's a considerable increase in torque...way better that the coffee can ricer gadets...lol.
- throatier exhaust sound is a bonus (i already have a DIY sports exhaust)
- bonus ROW reprogram...Pedro reprog'd my DME to ROW, so I can delete the 2ndary air pump--> weight savings.

Other modifications before Pedro's TP2:
- Fabspeed headers w/ sportcats
- 2ndary cat-delete pipes
- DIY sport muffler
- Cold air intake mod (dry cone filter)
- lowering springs
- TechnoTorque (can't reuse due to larger 997 S TB ); you can, however, reuse the rubber gasket...fits in nicely and no leaks...below is old gasket on the new 997 S TB T-section....exact fit.

- PowerChip reprogram

Some photos:
In the Box (Pedro needed my CLU+key...guinea pig duties)

Before

After (I had to cut the elbow by 3/4" to give me room for the rest of the piping...hence the extra protection tab)

The elbow to TB was a very tight fit...and consumed most of my installation...olive oil around the rim was the difference in the end...I was smoked (i.e. my butt was kicked)

even tried using a spoon...prior to the olive oil...LOL

AOS tube broke during installation...Pedro's instructions address this possibility and provides a solution: went to Lowes and bought a 3/4" heating tube for 50 cents. Dealer charges $148 + tax for the tube fittings alone...

Only one problem (my fault) - I have an airbag warning light on because I removed the CLU (under left seat) without disconnecting battery first. Pedro needed my CLU to get the 2.7L TIP baseline program; my DME was write-protected from PowerChip. If there is anyone in the DC with a Durametric that can help me reset the warning airbag light and want to see Pedro's TP2 up close, please let me know.

I'm definitely a satisfied Pedro customer...please let me know if you have any questions...I (and Pedro) will be happy to answer.

Vroom-a-grin,
Kimo
Happy to hear Kimo. Happy Boxstering. *NM*

Improved gas mileage as well...

I forgot to mention this important observation: it normally takes me much more than 3/4 tank of gas to drive from NC to Washington DC; today, it took me less than 3/4 tank of gas...and the only difference is the TP2...thanks, again, Pedro
We've noticed...

... an improvement of 2.5 to 5.0 mpg depending on which particular engine (2.5, 2.7 or 3.4 liter) you have and how you drive the car.
Because it has so much more torque and HP the engine work less to perform the same work and therefore gets better mileage.
This TechnoPower2 Kit will actually pay for itself someday winking smiley
Happy Boxstering,

... on your installation.
1.- The hose clamps on the blue silicone hump tube need to be moved to the outer edge of the hump tube.
In order to be effective a hose clamp needs to be no more than 1/4" from the edge of the flexible fitting it secures.
2.- The heater hose you use to rebuild the AOS to Tee tube needs to be reinforced so it won't collapse with the engine's vacuum.
These reinforced hoses have an internal coil made of steel wire that maintains the shape of the hose under vacuum.

BTW, you actually weren't the guinea pig. We had tested on half a dozen cars before.
The reason we needed you to send us your CLU and car key was because the previous remap you had on the ECU was encrypted and could not be written over.
So, with the CLU and key chip we were able to first, bring back your ECU to RoW OEM spec, thus erasing the previous program, then we were able to remap your ECU so that it would accept the new (and existing) hardware in your car.

Happy Boxstering,
Pedro

Re: Kimo, I noticed two things that you need to address...

I don't know what these particular connections look like, but you don't want to have any clamps sitting on top of a flare that is near the edge of metal or plastic tubes or pipes. I couldn't find an image of what I mean, but the flare looks like a bulging ring (think of a gold wedding band) right at the end of a tube. Clamps should be positioned immediately past the flare, on the side away from the end.

Thanks, Laz...I understand what you're saying...

the throttle body has an initial lip (but not obviously flared) and the clamp is beyond that portion, as you stated. There is a groove between the TB lip and where the clamp would go, so the seal is very tight. After 500+ miles, still no leaks in the system that would generate a CEL. I will move the clamps (around the blue tube part) that Pedro addressed to ensure the best seal, since there are no flares worry work around. In this case, the position of the clamps make all the difference, as Pedro stated....I'm always learning.

Thanks for the feedback.
Another thing...no more backfires from muffler...

I guess the PowerChip remap didn't fully account for my sports muffler and straight pipes (2ndary cat deletes), even though they knew about it...Pedro fixed all that with his remap...now the exhaust is smooth and throaty.

Bravo to Pedro...thanks for all that you do for us.

I appreciate you and your son meeting me today and helping out someone in need.

Driving your Cayenne S was a treat..thanks for letting me have that experience. I may purchase one for the winters in DC.

Enjoy the wine and cigars...
