"Clunk" when shifting up from lower gears
JerryW - Wednesday, 18 January, 2012, at 2:59:34 pm
I hear a distinct clunk when shifting from 1st to 2nd and sometimes to 3rd. The noise sounds like free play is being taken up abruptly. CV joints are new. Is this likely to be the result of a worn engine mount or transmission mounts? Others have mentioned vibration in connection with engine mount but I'm not experiencing anything unusual other than the "clunk". 2003 S with 78,000 miles. Any thoughts are welcome.

Sounds like the classic symptoms of a broken front motor mount to me.

If you want to confirm it, you can put a jack under the motor (use a spacer/pad) and raise it slowly/gently you'll see the front of the begin to lift w/o lifting the rest of the car. I did this with the car already on jack stands.

Are you on your original motor mount?

If so, then the problem is almost definitely that.

Yes...the motor mount is the original. Thanks to Pedro's DIY it looks like a relatively easy replacement so I'll give it go. Thanks for the input.
