Track tires
grant - Saturday, 12 May, 2012, at 9:56:50 am
Folks,

I'm seeking experience and advice for track tires.
Must be available in 255/40-17 and 205/50-17 (this rules out many, including the Michelin SuperSports)

The requirements:

1. as sticky as possible, but limited by the following
2. must be street-able tires to get me to tracks as far as 600 miles away
3. must have lots of warning at break-away - very progressive

SO i believe that all pretty much rules out true R-spec tires.

I've narrowed my search to the following, but i'm open to considered experience on others:

1. Dunlop Direzza Star Spec
2. Bridgestone RE-11

I'd prefer the Direzza, but its Tire-rack only and

a) i dont like the finger pointing i've had from them in the past with OOR tires
b) i like to support my local PCA shop

The Bridgestones are a bit more costly, and are said to be very heavy and noisy, balanced by indestructible even in AutoX.

Your two pence?

Have you considered these?....

I used them for many seasons and earlier this year I started using Toyo R888.

Racecar spelled backwards is Racecar

"Racing is life. Anything before or after is just waiting" ... Steve McQueen as Michael Delaney in "LeMans"

"If you wait, all that happens is that you get older"... Mario Andretti

"Being second is to be the first of the ones who lose" ... Ayrton Senna
Definitely NOT abrupt.

Victoracers are a great DOT-R track tire. I think the concerns about abrupt breakaway for track tires in general is way overstated. And for the Victoracers it is not an issue at all. They provide very good feedback. Unfortunately they became scarce in the sizes I needed last year. And now I need the RA1 as a spec tire (which so far is also pretty good).

These are supposedly the hot ticket for track tires you can drive on the street:

The 205 size isn't available, but the 225/45/17 will fit a 7" boxster front rim; Discount tire carries these also.

Does the Kumho XS come in those sizes? It's a good track tire but I wouldn't want to drive in a thunderstorm with them.

Another choice could be the Sumitomo HRTZ lll (?); an inexpensive max perf. tire that some guys like at the track.

That bad in water? It is for the track after all.....

C&D did a test a few years back on these and they had the highest level of dry traction in their group but became iffy on a wet track which i can attest to. If you're not going to drive these on a wet track then the only issue is how they'd handle a wet drive to and from the track.
BTW, these wore like iron and didn't seem to require as much camber as some tires do.

No 255/40/17 in the R-S3? TR showed it on their site..
Good info. Thanks. I will look again re: the 255/40-17.

i'm still processing.

However, i'm leaning toward one of several that are hybrid street/track tires rather than the purer track tires, since i do need to drive thousands of miles on public highways on them, and since in autox season i will likely nto want to swap them out all that often.

The Yoko 08s look really good, as do the Direzza star specs (my original quest).

One of them is likely to be on my spare wheels soon.

At some point i'll likely be able to have an even purer track tire - so all the info is very, very appreciated.
