Direct from both the factory and Bentley repair manuals, re: disconnecting the rear control arm from the wheel carrier/hub.

OK, i just did a dry fit to see if i had access. There is no way one has access, the torx points directly at the CV joint, less than 1" away.

What gives, those of you who have solved this puzzle?

I used a torx bit that was an insert to a socket. Then I held the bit with needle nose vise grips. You have to jack up the wheel to ease access, then use an open end wrench.
Thank you!

Not as simple as they make it sound, eh?

A 90-degree tool would be nice. Wonder if i can bend a cheapie? :-)

I use a short torn bit with a ratcheting wrench.

My access must be different from yours.

I cannot even get my torx bit (3/8" socket) in between the Ball Joint shaft and the CV metal case, much less the ratcheting handle....

You do not use a socket. Pull the bit out of the socket and use it with a wrench or needle nose vice grips.
Aha. That makes sense. I was...

actually at SEARs last eve (exchanging a breaker bar that did as its name suggests), and found some things that would work. inconvenient though. They have these stubby offset ratcheting handles that grab the hex-sided bits you refer to, but they dont come with torx. The torx T-40 comes in a $20 kit with a ratcheting t-handle. So, for about $40 you get the parts.

I think i'll see who might sell the actual Porsche special tool.

This should work fine

and has general applicability (also works to remove screws from dash speaker grills, for example).

It's a standard bit size so you can use almost any set

I have this set and I use it regularly. It's a great investment:

Lots of vendors of it on eBay too but I really like Harbor Freight for their selection, prices, and customer service so I tend to support them first.
Another way

If you soak the nut in PB Blaster, then use an impact wrench they will often separate.
