Using an intaglio burnishing tool made it a cinch to lift the locking clips up.

Ok, a second hint: the clips don't have to be completely removed.
Thanks Laz I notice that struts on mine are getting a bit "lazy". They still hold the lid up, but a bit of wind from behind will knock it down..
a brand I found on Amazon called "Boxi". They are still working today just as the day I installed them & they have been the longest lasting replacement struts I have owned. Here's a link to a pair of the front trunk Boxi struts I purchased. Don't know the model year for your Boxster, but you might check on Amazon to see if Boxi has a strut that will fit your car. Likely a good idea to replace the 2 front & 2 rears while you're @ it. Best!

Thanks John. I just checked and there doesn't seem to be a listing for newer Boxsters on Amazon. Mine is a 2014.
Sorry about Boxi being a no-go for you, Guenter. Just found these on Amazon & the customer reviews are good, but I have no experience w/them.

My originals were on the car for 20 years. Replaced front and back with Boxi brand in 2020 Nov and Feb respectively.
Replacing the struts was the best and cheapest upgrade I can remember making.

Whenever I do this I always wonder why I didn't do it earlier
