I have to ask if there are precautionary procedures for a later Boxster. The idea of the windows opening in a rainstorm is particularly disturbing. Any references would be appreciated. Thanks, Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

Sorry you had to cancel the track event. I had a discharge problem with my 987.2 which has never been resolved and has not recurred. My solution was to purchase an emergency starter which actually fits in the glove box. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Well, the car acts like it thinks it is not in park. I don't have PDK, but I assume there is some indication on the dash that it's in "P". Next time this happens check that the indication is there if you haven't done so already.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Does this behavior happen when you have just unlocked the car? Reason I asked is that I had a strange electrical experience, battery drained when the car sat for 5 days in my garage unlocked, and the service advisor told me that it's best to have the car locked even in one's home garage. Something about the car going into a "sleep" mode. there was no problem found and I have not had the probleby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I'm in the Minneapolis area, and I wait for the first rain to get rid of the salt. The parking lots have patches white with salt. I have two cars in the garage which I plan on keeping indefinitely and hope to avoid the coming changes to our sports cars in the future.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

I admit I am biased. I have not looked at prices and availability for the 987.2 with the 9A1 engine lately, but I was surprised when I was car shopping at the relatively low price for the Boxsters with the newer engine without IMS. It may be that the cause is fewer units out on the street, but there seems to be a very low number of 987.2 cars with problems.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I just had my cataracts done this last October. For the first time in my life, I don't need contacts or glasses. I don't trust your doctor to understand the stresses placed on the body on the track. Ask the doctor how he would feel about you taking a wild roller coaster ride at an amusement park two days after surgeryby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

I followed your postings on ppbb and this forum for years before I finally bought the Boxster. This forum was very helpful in making the big decision to risk owning a Porsche out of warranty. Good luck in the future. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
It sounds like you plan on keeping the car for awhile. Since the transmission will be replaced, the DOF from Pedro would be a good idea IMO. It would be a real shame to put the money into the car and then have the engine go. At least do your own research on the subject. Good luck. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Just curious Mark. What are the issues that make the GT4 expensive to service/repair? Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Unfortunately, I don't see that there would be that much difference at first glance. Thanks for the detailed rundown of the costs. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I suggest you not attempt to start the car. The most important thing is to determine the cause of the over heating that you experienced and to check for any possible damage. The cost of the flatbed tow to the Porsche dealer is small compared to that of possible damage to the car.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I have heard of no serious widespread problems with the 2009 and newer Boxsters. There seems to be more than usual battery issues with Porsches. I had an unexplained discharge issue a few weeks ago that has not recurred. I was told by the service manager that the car should be left locked, even in the home garage. The tire pressure sensors are due to be replaced if this has not been done. Inby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

I thought I would try out my new emergency jump starter by discharging the battery by leaving the rear trunk unlatched. I found that the rear trunk light turns off automatically after a few hours just as the front trunk light does. There must have been an upgrade from earlier Boxsters to the 987.2.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The car was parked in my garage, so water was not an issue. Most of the time the car sits for less than a few hours unless it's parked at home in the garage. My plan right now is to park the car with the hood unlatched in my garage and see if the problem appears again. The front hood light turns off automatically after a couple of hours so that will not be the cause of any discharge. I can chby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Just to be clear, my wife inserted the key before she realized anything was amiss. My plan right now is to keep an eye on things to see what I can learn. Pedro's comment was very helpful. He has seen the problem on more than one car caused by a faulty rear trunk lid latch that did not shut off the light. On a scale of 1 to 10 I place the importance of a rear trunk light at about 1. and that wasn't it. Interestingly, the front trunk light goes out by itself after a couple of hours. That makes the battery maintainer more efficient since the front trunk lid is open to access the battery. That's not to say the rear trunk light isn't the problem, just that it happens to be working today.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I did not remove the key after the car started. I will keep an eye on the behavior after the car shuts down in the future to make sure there are no instruments lit on the dash. Thanks.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Just over a week ago I got a call from my wife that the Boxster was completely dead and the key was stuck in the ignition. The car had been sitting for 5 days, but the battery is fairly new, just over a year old and I use the CTEK battery maintainer during winter storage. The car sat for 5 days over Memorial Day weekend in May and there were absolutely no issues. I tried using the procedure inby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

I just had a complete set of Pilot Super Sports installed by the dealer, and the readout on the panel is 30 front and 31 rear when cold. I checked the door sticker, and sure enough, that's the spec for my car.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Through a non-scientific process of looking at older vehicles in parking lots, I believe that Honda and Toyota are more resistant to body rust. I was going to get another Honda Pilot until reading reports on a Honda forum of reliability problems and driving a new Pilot uncovered a complete lack of steering feel which is a definite consideration regarding driving on icy roads. I live in the Minneapolis area and need something as a year round daily driver. I just sold a 2005 Honda Pilot and bought a new Lexus RX350. I've had a Macan loaner, and prefer the Lexus in every respect except steering feel. The Lexus isn't bad, but doesn't equal the Macan in that area. The maintenance cost of the Lexus should be less than the Porsche and it uses regular gas. I agree that Iby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

After spending some time searching with Google, I have come to the conclusion that I will live with the problem for the time being. The elastic straps that pull the sides of the top into position lose their elasticity over time. The straps have some holes that allow some adjustment but don't address the root cause and removing the slack in the straps just causes the remaining elasticity to vaniby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I am having an issue with cable hangup on the top guides when I close the top. I can work around the problem by closing the top part of the way and guiding the cables into position by hand. The problem is on both the driver's side and passenger's side. I have to believe that I am not the first person to have this problem, but I haven't seen it discussed here. The picture shows the issue:by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
