They don't say if this motor has the troublesome IMS:by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
If you go with DOF I believe Pedro recommends using the OEM IMS bearing and removing the seals.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I haven't looked at prices on used Boxsters since I bought mine in 2013, but at that time there seemed to be not a huge difference in prices between the cars with the new 9A1 engine and the 2008 cars.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The PC mag story has been updated after receiving comments from Porsche. Porsche flatly denies inputs from steering are used for emission control.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

It was a fantastic ride. I sold the R90S in 1992 and have no regrets. I'm a recovering speed addict, and I spent some afternoons on that bike going way too fast on the back roads of Minnesota and Wisconsin. I told a friend at the time I felt like a gambler who cashed in his chips and left the casino a big winner.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I predict the deadline will be extended. If not, even the wealthy few will not be able to easily find gasoline for their cars. It reminds me of a couple of situations from my past. After finishing grad school I bought a new Champion Citabria airplane in 1973. It used 80 octane avgas. The oil companies phased out 80 octane and replaced it with 100 octane low lead gas which had a lot more leadby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
A couple of things. There have been some less than complimentary reviews of the 718 based solely on engine sound. I would not be surprised to find discounts on in stock 718 Boxsters just to get them moving off dealers' lots. You could do a search nationwide to find one with the options you want if you like the car after a test drive.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I owned a 2002 Z3 for 13 years. Bought it new in February 2002. I had to sell it because my lower back problems worsened to the point I couldn't sit in the car for more than an hour. Bought the 2010 Boxster in 2013 and couldn't be happier. The only issue has been a broken shift cable fixed under the factory 4 year original warranty. By all I was able to find out a very unusual problem. My pby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
It effectively prevents an owner from suing individually for damages. I wonder what they are offering people that bought a used VW right before the scandal broke?by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I can't disagree with any of your points, however this would be your last chance to pick up a new Cayman with the six cylinder. There have been a lot of improvements over your 986 which I am sure you are well aware of.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The big advantage of buying a new car is that you get to order it exactly to your specs. You might find a deal on an in stock car if you can find one (nationwide) that is very close to what you want. The 9A1 engine now has a proven record of reliability. I understand your feelings about GM, but I have not had a bad experience here in Minnesota. My Corvette was purchased new in 2008 and my facby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Maybe. We are both car enthusiasts and don't see a 4 cylinder turbo as a possibility. So, if we upgrade in the future it will be a car new to us, but not a new car.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I was in a leg brace which allowed no movement for 2 weeks, and then a brace which allowed a 30 degree bend. I drove the Boxster a bit last week, but was careful not to take it in any kind of heavy traffic. My wife has been driving the Boxster regularly now, and has decided it's her favorite car. That makes a possible upgrade to a 981 in the future more likely.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
A member of our local Porsche club found out too late that the car tends to pick up stones which produce paint chips in front of the rear wheels. Protective film should be applied before the car leaves the dealer.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
My comments on my 2008 coupe are a bit further down the message list. My Corvette club runs a nice HPDE that allows a person to try out the performance of the car, and I hope you might have that option. Do you have manual or automatic transmission?by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I read somewhere that the turbo was supposed to be better for the European test cycle.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The Vette in question is a 2008 coupe with Z51 autocross suspension, sport exhaust (since we are talking about sound), and Pilot Super Sport tires (non run-flat). Six speed manual, of course. I had the car on a 3 mile track with 1 mile straight when it was only 3 months old. I had previously tracked a 2000 Vette coupe, and this car was significantly faster. We're talking 436 hp in a car onlyby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The problem isn't so much the 4 cylinder vs. 6 cylinder; it's the whole package including turbo. I see the main impact for me as a plus for retained value in my 987, not that I plan on selling.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
When I was much younger and just beginning to appreciate sports cars, I was fortunate enough to observe several 718's on the track. I don't recall being disappointed about the way they sounded. We need a comparison between a 60's vintage 718 and a new 718.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
A Boxster with performance better than out 2008 Corvette is worth lusting after. Not that a 718 is in the near future for us.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
So, what do they mean by "direct steering"?by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Part of the challenge in driving in snowy Minnesota is knowing the safest way between two points when the weather gets bad. The safest way is usually not the shortest distance. Think hills and stretches one knows to be particularly difficult. I am not worried that we will see self driving cars in the foreseeable future.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I found a good candidate locally, and my wife wouldn't even go look at it. Having another Porsche was not acceptable. House improvements come first. The Boxster we own evidently falls into a special category by itself.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
It's nice to be in no hurry whatsoever. My wife loves to drive the Boxster, so there is an advantage there. If I could find a low mileage single owner Cayenne for the same price as a new Honda Pilot or maybe a bit more, it might work.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I'm starting to do research on a replacement for our 11 year old Honda Pilot that has 110K miles on it. The comments by MarcW on his Cayenne diesel loaner, and my own experience with a Cayenne diesel loaner have started me thinking that I should not rule out a Porsche. The initial cost can be substantially higher than a Honda and still be reasonable if one keeps the vehicle for a long time. Whby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The only way that would make sense is if the recharging station was a special purpose built item - not standard house current.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I spent some time looking for just the right Boxster for me. The great majority of newer used Boxsters were being sold by Porsche dealers. I did not look at non USA cars, but this sounds fishy to me.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The most simple calculations of cost per mile for most cars will show that the biggest cost is depreciation. If my car holds its value, that's a lot better than most drivers will get. A big factor is that I bought the car used from the original owner. It's an Arizona car, and I don't plan on selling it. Of course, one never knows. There was an estimate that 25% of car crashes in Minnesota arby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
