Using an impact wrench on the center shaft locking nut can brinell the bearing races and balls. Actually, any impact wrench use on the engine could damage the bearing. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
The Vertex roller bearing and oiling system is interesting. Installing a new IMS bearing with an impact wrench will cause it to fail quickly. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
Removing he seals from the bearing would let the oil in the shaft drain. A hole in the shaft would add to oil spay in the crank case, not necessarily a good thing. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum

Thanks Mark, Grant and Pedro. Yes it was fuse E6. I hadn't checked the fuses. I didn't expect a bad fuse would prevent filling the tank. Codes P1128 and P1130 are caused by air leaks according to the factory manual. I did a smoke test with no leaks found. Codes P1128 and P1130 came back. Negative smoke test. I replaced the MAF sensor. Let's hope that fixes it. Now I can't put gas in it. There is a good thread the on Pelican Parts forum. It doesn't seem to be the purge valve or the magnet sensor. No "click". Maybe the tank valve. Stay tuned. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum

For those of you trying to find vacuum leaks, there are units on Ebay in the $80 range. Or you can make one. How to videos on You tube. One uses a 5 gallon plastic pail and a cigar. Others use a 1 gallon paint pail, a burning rag and baby oil. Made one yesterday. A pressure regulator from a gas grill has about 1/2 psi output. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
Mice and I have been at war for years. Current weapons are "Decon", "Tomcat" and peppermint oil. Been through moth balls and "Bounce". Had them build a nest in the air filter of my F250 diesel. Got a CEL for low boost. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
Marc, Thanks for the additional tips. The mice here seem to prefer older Porsches and Audis. This is the first time they they have picked on the Boxster. At least they have good taste. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum
I checked the oil filler tube in the trunk and didn't find any cracks., I did find evidence of mice though, and took approbate action. No damaged wires! I looked in the engine bay earlier, butI can check again. The Pelican forum has a thread on these codes caused by the MAF unit. Since mine doesn't show codes often, I'll see what happens next. Marc, I ran diagnostics again this morning with the PST 2. Referring to factory diagnosis manuals (Group O, part 1). For DME set points, some of the numbers I get don't agree too closely with the manual. I'm looking at pages 24-D53 thru 24-D55 issued in 1998. My Boxster is a 2000 S. I have the supplements through #3, issued in 1999. Is there a later supplement that covers the "S" and if there iby Ed B - Main Forum
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll get back to it next week. I do have the full set of factory shop manuals. The car is driven between DE events, varying from a hundred to a thousand miles. The first occurrence was coming back from the 2015 Parade. I normally run DE's starting with a full tank. It was over half full when the codes appeared this time. Marc, The oil filler cap was OK the previous time I had the codes. I didn't check it this time. will do. I can't confirm this, but the codes seem to appear after some track sessions when the engine is hot. Edby Ed B - Main Forum
It's been a while but codes P1128 7 P1130 are back on my 2000 Boxster S with 40k miles. Runs great. Happened at Palmer Motorsports Park DE last weekend. (Oxygen sensing at enrichment limit, idle) . Shop manual says fault is air intake leak, fuel pressure supply too low or dirty injectors. I have found no exhaust or intake leaks using the carb cleaner test. Thanks Marc and Pedro for your suggestions. The oil filler cap is tight. The plastic hoses on the AOS look good but it's a likely suspect. I did find a hose on the secondary air injection pump not fully seated. I reseated it and put a clamp on it. It's a subtle leak since it tock almost a year to re-appear after the first occurrence. I'll try the carb cleaner approach if/when il. reappears. Eby Ed B - Main Forum
Hi all, Last year, returning from the Parade, check engine light came on. I replaced a used exhaust gasket with a new one and reset the codes. All was well. At a DE last Saturday, just finished a 20 minute session with car idling in the garage, check engine light came on. Same codes. Drove 1 hour home. Next day, reset the codes. In the "old" days with narrow tires, wear in center of the tread indicated the pressure was too high. Not so with modern wide tires. They need higher pressures to force the sidewalls out and flatten the tread. Assuming alignment is correct in both cases. Ed Bby Ed B - Main Forum

My wife's Audi A3 Quattro has all season tires, My Audi S4 Quattro has snow tires. My F250 Diesel pick up has M + S tires. We can get any of them stuck in the right conditions. It all depends on the nut behind the wheel. Pick the tire for the conditions you will be driving in. Four wheel drive just lets you get further off the road before you get stuck.
