I taught my sister in a Volvo PV544 stick. Trauma to me and the clutch/gearbox. When it came time to teach my kids, I figured one less thing to worry about with an auto. And times had changed and it wasn't lightly used roads like I learned on but crowded roads where defensive driving was a constant need. My constant query was "where is your escape route, where is the danger liable to be coming frby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
35 and 40 have never driven a stick shift. My wife hasn't for 40+ years. By the time the kids got to driving, the city had become so congested I no longer drove one and so they learned on autos. I know of no one their age who has a stick. And just a few old timers who have toy cars that still do.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
we called it "infant mortality". A certain number of failures would occur early, then a long period of stability until the end of life failures started occurring. Not seen when the sample size is small but get the sample size up and you see the pattern.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
is the finale to the PBS production on the Capital grounds on the fourth off July. Played by the National Symphony Orchestra. The cannons firing as the fireworks start. (The secret was to go down the night before for a full dress rehearsal. Full production without the hundreds of thousands the fireworks brought. but my car was generally parked in a garage, under a Noah cover, etc overnight or in hibernation. Most of the trip stops the top was down (isn't that why we buy these things). RaggTop held up perfectly for me as I washed at least once every two weeks with whatever brand of car wash was at a discount or handy. And get the bird stuff off as soon as you see it. Acid can eat the car's finish. My wby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
a spare drain plug and would hand it along with a filter, crush washer, bottles of oil etc to the mechanic and got back a filter and drain plug after watching the oil fill. Not that my oil was ever that dirty, I guess I just wanted the drain plug to be clean and oil free when used. I'd clean it myself, inspect the filter and then bag it for use the next time. A 5 year old list but the good ones stay in business and thrive. The local PCA newsletter would be a good place to start too. http://sites.google.com/site/mikefocke2/northernvirginiarepairshops Any DC area folk want to help me update that list?by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
for 5 years. Never had any problems at all. 30 minutes for about 12-15 miles. Wonderfully reliable. Since I was in the DC area I had another car for the snow but once the road was sorta clear it was the Boxster again. Like you I had covered parking at work. Any one rags you about the car, point out how old it is. Most will have newer cars. Few better. Do respect the temperature and the kind ofby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

will also be used by VW to produce their own version I suspect. Speaking of Europe, just got back from a 2 week trip and was struck by how few Porsches I saw in in 6 countries (including a day in Germany). By far the largest number were Cayannes (including Taxis), one Pana GTS, 3 Turbos, 2 911s. No Boxsters, no Caymans. Only one is 8 hours in Berlin and it was a Yellow Turbo being driven vigoroby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

you loved each of the 4 Alfas? I had 2, a Giulietta Veloce 1.3 I bought just out of school from a Rambler dealer in Chicago and a Giulia 1.6 I bought in DC. Neither lasted more then 3 years. The only worse cars in my life were a 914 and a Plymouth Horizon. Well OK, my wife's Falcon and a Volvo PV544. They both rusted. They blew head gaskets. Fun while they lasted but I had to be paying the lby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
the lawyer hands the assistant DA a stack of paper (they deal in volume) and the DA gets enough time to handle the really tough cases. I'd do it just for the insurance impact. Not to mention the potential impact of another situation where points get added to points and now you risk your license for a while.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
recall on that same road telling the officer I was doing an Italian tuneup on my father's '65 Rambler. This was before the beltway existed and you went up the parkway and back down. By the back down part and his stop I had slowed to legal speed so he really had no proof but he knew from seeing me go up the other side.... is a personal decision. How much can you spend, what are the consequences of not spending, what are the liabilities if you don't, can you live with yourself if you don't? Did they say they wouldn't do it or just didn't recommend it? I can see why, with so many other things that can and do (but infrequently) go wrong in a 150+k car, they may not want to have their work associated with the probabby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
As many times as I washed my Boxster (or sometimes even deliberately drove it through a storm including hurricanes), no water ever intruded. Something is wrong but the good news is you don't have to be anything but observant to figure out where it is coming from. Lots of water on the outside and someone watching and feeling on the inside. For now, get a fan blowing into the interior with the wby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

I'm curious as I now own a car that, because it is a hybrid, doesn't run the engine all the time. Yet the engine is well known for 300k+ miles in that application. Think long commute or taxi. Most of those reports are from very intensive use per unit of time cars through....like 100k per year! The oil change interval is not significantly different than the Boxster's though the viscosity is. Likewby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Had any trouble with your top mechanism? There is a foam edged area under the clamshell that sometimes loses its ability to direct water because a part of the top mechanism fails and hits it and the damage allows an overflow to dump in the wrong place.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
I just happened to read your post after reading another UOA thread on Renntech. Your Aluminum is ~3x the 3 tests there, your iron is ~2.5x. Neither owner mentions the use the car gets though one is a low miles but 17 months between changes car from the dates and miles differences between his two tests.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Fortunately he was talking about the electronic gadget companies (Google, Apple, etc) and what to invest in. Not the mechanicals of our cars. More toys in our cars were where the market is going he felt because we have so much time in our cars with so little to do. Oh good, more distracted drivers. The contrast he was making was to in-a-house gadget makers. You can just wander over and punch theby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
Given a similar age/mileage, I choose to use the "most service items" routine service (which for me was 90k) as a starting point. My cars were wonderfully reliable. Never know if that had anything to do with it.by mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum
my interactions with some leads me to think lawyers go after the low hanging fruit in class actions. They like already proven causes with identified plaintiffs and already identified expert witnesses. Since they have to invest money to fund the case and collect nothing if they lose, they like to improve their odds. Notice they didn't expand the class of "injured parties" to include the first geneby mikefocke, '01S Sanford, NC - Main Forum

you can buy an extended warranty backed by a Porsche entity above the dealer level. It is a decision of the local Porsche distributor. Does/did he feel that it was needed to sell his allotment.
