Clean examples of the '986' are common. The cost of a proper inspection along with shipping the car is substantial enough that you are better off continuing your search closer to home.by silverbox03 - Main Forum
I have no qualms about a 4 cyl engine. I'm not that enthused about turbos, though. I've never cared for the "on or off" power nature of turbos, and then there's the issue of reliability and complexity. But turbos will be finding their way into more and more cars. So we'd better get used to the idea. Pleased to think Porsche is considering a return to their philosophy of simplicity, purity, and lby silverbox03 - Main Forum
Correction, it IS illegal to drive at the speed limit, below the speed limit, or above the speed limit in the left hand(passing lane) if you are impeding traffic behind you unneccessarily. And while i can't condone the actions of this particular state trooper for giving the Honda driver a little wake up in such a manner, he was addressing an unsafe practice that is too common on our multi-lane eby silverbox03 - Main Forum
My thought is this looks to be stupidly complicated. I imagine a manually removable roof panel wouldn't fit anywhere in the car.by silverbox03 - Main Forum
I've been driving for over 40 years, and this has only gotten worse. The violators know what their doing.by silverbox03 - Main Forum
Yep, I got one, but seldom use it. I believe it goes to 200# or so. I went without one for so many years that I still tighten things by "feel".by silverbox03 - Main Forum
You can have your car repaired at the shop of your choice, if I'm not mistaken. I live in Wisconsin, and that's the way it is here. I believe it's a federal law, though. So-called "preferred shops" should be avoided. They work with adjusters to make the repair as economical as possible for the insurance company. And State Farm is one of the biggest abusers through their "preferred shops". They haby silverbox03 - Main Forum
Left lane abusers, at least 99% of them, know exactly what they're doing, it's deliberate. Many states have laws against occupying the left lane for the wrong purpose, but they are not enforced.by silverbox03 - Main Forum
Ramps, I agree. Putting a car in the air in order to get underneath it for repairs or service should be taken very seriously. If I can add one more suggestion, if it is at all possible have another person there with you. A friend of mine was working under a car a few years ago when his car rolled off of its supports and killed him. It was said that if someone would have been there, they could haby silverbox03 - Main Forum
Veyron is an amazing car with some pretty wild capabilities, although even with that said, the cost of it just makes it a lot less amazing since for that kind of money, no major feat. Am I the only one who thinks that(with or without the gold wrap)it's not an attractive car?by silverbox03 - Main Forum
paulwdenton, you are correct, sir. This could be all good. As a matter of fact, all the better without the turbo. I've owned a number of higher output 4cyl. cars over the years and kicked plenty of 8 cyl. butts.by silverbox03 - Main Forum
In recent years, I've been buying our cars used. About half of them from dealers, the other half from private owners with great success. Cars are crappy investments, and new ones are the worst. I sold two Boxsters, one in 2007, and one last year. In my experience, the phone doesn't exactly ring off the wall for these cars. And you can screen potential shoppers to the extent that face to face encoby silverbox03 - Main Forum
I agree, it's neat!! There was a time when I didn't care for these hues, but maybe an acquired taste? Turquoise(or similar)wound up on some of my favorite cars--Lotus Elan, Porsche 356, early Boxsters and Mazda MX5's, to name a few.by silverbox03 - Main Forum
I agree w/paulwdenton. The 981 is probably a wonderful car, one that can do almost everything better than the 986 or 987. But it is garish when compared to the early cars. One kinda weird thing for me is that it looks better in pictures than in the flesh. It looks huge to me when seen in person and I know it is not that much bigger than the 986. I don't care for the extra size and complexity thaby silverbox03 - Main Forum
This is an odd comparison. I could never be interested in something as big and heavy as the M6, it's not very sports car like. BMW has lost me. They were selling something like 45,000 cars a year in the U.S. when I bought my first one. Nobody knew what a BMW was back then. It was a lot of fun to own one then and they were great cars. Today they don't interest me for the direction that they've takby silverbox03 - Main Forum
Thanks for sharing. That is truly "it". A great road on a great day in a great car. Pushing it just enough to get it working. I guess we're partial, but to me, there is nothing like this in a Boxster. Any of 'em, whether 986, 987, or 981. Almost spiritual. What other production car can offer such experience. You can almost feel each individual wheel for what it is doing. The engine borders on theby silverbox03 - Main Forum
Holy crap!! Over 600 lbs. difference?? No wonder. There are mid-size sedans out there that don't weigh as much as that Z4. Sorry BMW, I can't even consider the Z4 to be a "sports car".by silverbox03 - Main Forum
Reduced road feel in the steering seems to be a trend for many modern cars. Our daily drivers have been Hondas for almost 30 years. The Accord of the 1990's had the best steering of anything in its class at the time. But with every new generation, that has deteriorated. I am going to a '981' intro tomorrow evening and I'm hoping to get some "wheel time". One of the qualities of Boxsters and 911'sby silverbox03 - Main Forum
911's, Boxsters, Caymans, all just wonderful in their own unique way. I'm just happy to be able to hang on to my 986, as the last few years have been tough. All of us should consider ourselves fortunate to have the means to enjoy these cars. I do think the 986 will always be iconic. It's the original. Porsche bringing a new design out with a nod to the past, ie, 550, RS60, etc. The 987 was somby silverbox03 - Main Forum
I'm currently looking at used cars, since I have to replace my daily driver. It sure is annoying when the seller insists on including equipment in the ad that one knows to be STANDARD equipment anyway. What is up with that?by silverbox03 - Main Forum
I like the fact that the '06 'S' has lower miles per year, and you are smart to consider cars with a few miles on them since the ultra-low mileage cars will depreciate at a higher rate, but the '08 is really a bit high in miles. I agree that the standard Boxster is 99% as satisfying as the 'S'. I've had both and I miss some of the qualities I enjoyed in my '99. Unless you demand higher performanby silverbox03 - Main Forum
I agree with Mark. If you have oil consumption, it will not be affected by adding in a quart(or any higher number)of heavier oil. Remember, 0w is the weight on a cold start, and the viscosity changes, as needed, as the engine reaches temp. Again, there is nothing wrong with moderate oil consumption on any engine. I have had many cars in the last 40 years, and I remember at least a couple of thoseby silverbox03 - Main Forum
Another good brand is Schumacher. I have one of their larger chargers that will charge or maintain, as well as a feature that will start a car with a dead battery. It's about 25 years old and has never let me down. I also have one of their small maintainers that is 15 years old and has been reliable.by silverbox03 - Main Forum
Kinda late to this thread, so not much to add. I think your questions have been answered. I autocrossed for a while years ago and, in my experience, the largest wheels with ultra low-profile tires are not always the best performing. I think 18's are a practical choice. The rubber you choose will be more important in finding a balance in ride, handling, wear, etc. I have run Pirelli P-zero for thby silverbox03 - Main Forum
I gotta respect this Harris guy for some nice controlled drifting and his interpretation of this car, believable, since this is simply "more" of what the previous Box was, eg. "balance" ," the perfect sports car"," what more car do you need?", etc. Those who apply gender to certain cars, especially relevant very good cars, are idiots who must have some self-image issues. 991? I don't like SUV's. I have less problem with the new crossovers and the smaller SUV's. I think there are a substantial number of drivers out there that can justify one of the big honkers because they are sportsman who frequent the backwoods or pull trailors, etc. It is "wasteful" that even more of these vehicles seldom see no more severe duty than jumping a curb at the mall. And it is an excercisby silverbox03 - Main Forum
Well, that writer is ignorant. I cannot count the number of articles I have read over the years that praise the 986/987 chassis as being the best of Porsche. And, as has been said on this very forum, Porsche deliberately holds the Boxster/Cayman back in order to prevent canibalizing the sales of the 911. The car is that good. If I couldn't have a Boxster, I would probably look to the Elise or thby silverbox03 - Main Forum
