The P1128 error came back. Difference this time -- vs. the time before -- is the error data appears to indicate some kind of intake air leak. The long term fuel trims show "big" positive numbers which is the DME *adding* fuel. After I got the car back after the tech found leaves in the air box and up against the plastic screen just ahead of the MAF the car was running better. And the P1128 stayeby MarcW - Main Forum

Quotedb997S I know indies are cheaper, but none are as convenient as my dealer. It would take a bunch of coordination to get it all worked out. Yeah, I know, the price savings might have made it worthwhile, but I thought I had plenty of tread left on my tires. Like I said, the wear was on the extreme inside maybe half-inch. The tech put the car on the lift and showed my how bad they were. Myby MarcW - Main Forum
Quotedb997S On top of the "major service" fee (plugs and filters changed), front pads/rotors/sensors need to be replaced, need new tires (extreme inside edge of rears were gone), I decided to replace tire pressure monitors at same time (8 years old), and an alignment. Think the tab is going to be around $8K, but not final. Hope to get a nice PCA member discount, though. Now, just have to breby MarcW - Main Forum
to be unable to properly align my 2006 GTO. The front tires were shot in hardly any time. I can only imagine (and shudder) at the outcome had I taken my Boxster there. If one doesn't want to have the algnment done at the dealer an indy tire shop might be ok but it has to be one that comes highly recommended by other Porsche owners who have had good results.by MarcW - Main Forum
assembly. Early on they could replace just the electrical portion but there were too many bring backs and Porsche stopped supporting replacing just the electrical portion. Somewhere I have the old switch out of my Boxster but I can't put my hands on it. My memory of when I looked this old switch over -- right after it was replaced -- is there is a lot of hardware between the key and the electricby MarcW - Main Forum
Quotebb1 Hello fellow Boxster owners I have a 2000 Boxster w/ the 2nd top on it (replaced about 2005). There is a small crack on the edge of the window - probably 1" in length total. Pretty minor. It's so close to the edge it's hardly noticeable. I want to repair it myself if possible using some kit - just to avoid rain getting in/etc. Sure others have gone thru this and hoping you can shareby MarcW - Main Forum

QuoteBoxsterra The MAF and throttle body are both upstream of the AOS. Yes, the subject is intended to be a double-entendre. You're welcome. Don't get the double-entendre but that's not important I guess. The MAF is quite a ways from the AOS and was not affected by the AOS's failure. Might mention the old MAF was not dirty. The AOS connects to the intake directly after (downstream) of the thrby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteBoxsterra You're willing to assign credibility to automakers that recently required a government bailout to avoid bankruptcy? Tesla is on the way up. Ford, GM, etc. are on the way down. Stock price is not a reflection of the current value but the perceived future value. GM took (and needed) fed bail out money. Ford if I recall didn't need or want any bailout but was forced to take it. FWIby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteBoxsterra Resource allocation is always tricky business. Tesla's model for order fulfillment has not been to hire more people but to develop better process automation. That's why when a supplier missed out on delivering a piece of automation hardware the factory's output tanked by 100x. Flagships are good for a brand. Yes, but in this case they had my help in getting where they didn't belong. Another reason I miss my Cayman S. The air box was redesigned and the air filter was huge and while I never changed it -- obviously didn't have the car long enough -- the tech when he was removing the baffle at the fitler intake told me the new Cayman air filter was much easier to change. *not* an intake or vacuum hose leak. Tech reports the smoke test was negative for any intake and vacuum hoses. That's a relief. Tech removed the air filter and found leaves in the intake air box and in the tube that runs from the air box to the MAF and beyond. Loaned me his mirror on a stick and helped me aim it I too was able to see the leaves. When I changed the air filter I couldn't help butby MarcW - Main Forum
Got the Boxster in for this the other day, last Thursday actually, but then Thursday night at the office the 996 failed to start. I had the car flat bedded to the dealer and I left it there and picked up the Boxster. Got the 996 fixed: New fuel pump. The old one failed just short of 160K miles if anyone is interested. Anyhow, picked up the 996 this AM and left the Boxster. Again. SA emailed meby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteBarryL Hi Grant, Thanks so much for your comments. The belt had been replaced when the alternator was replaced last year. I am hesitant to put money into the valve cover leak now. Pointed thoughts on the wiring...hmmm..sure hope it was the battery as loosing power and engine shutoff or worry that it could happen at any time is not a comfortable position. Thanks again, Grant! Quotegrant If so, I never had any visible particles in my oil (cant really tell now), and I don't have the aftermarket IMS-B anymore, nor do i have an oil filter I can (easily) cut open any more :-) PArt of moving to the oiled journal bearing is an adapter that requries a spin-on metal can OF. If you are going to cut open the filter element you probably should capture a sample of oil to have analyzed. Also, you should dump the oil filter housing oil into a *clean* drain pan. You want to see what was caught by the filter but not captured/held in the filter elements. What you are looking for is are the bits of metal just pieces of debris that that got dislodged due to the g-forces of trby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteJohn from MN I love learning about how our cars are different. I'm at the service department today getting ready to store the car for the winter.... very sad day indeed. The rotors can be turned -- although Porsche may have something to say about this in the factory service manual (I don't recall seeing anything but that doesn't mean it isn't in there) -- but the presence of the holes --by MarcW - Main Forum
IIRC intake leak is at the top of the list of possible causes. I fell prey to the tendency to blame the MAF. The leaves and dirt the tech told me are things he and his co-workers have encountered over the years. It wasn't a hard diagnosis just something to check. I was aware of stuff falling off the filter into the air box when the filter is removed. I've changed the filter enough times and thiby MarcW - Main Forum
Remember that new tires are kind of "greasy" and it can take a hundred miles or so of use to work the greasiness out of the tires. This is approx. a couple of days of work commute for me at 60 miles a day.by MarcW - Main Forum
While 1% doesn't seem like much of an error who knows what the threshold is? Safety critical systems like ABS, traction control, stability management; can have much tighter thresholds, tighter operating tolerances, because property/life is at risk if something goes wrong. Even with a 1% difference this is probably still well within the margin of safety Porsche, or the companies that manufacture/sby MarcW - Main Forum
Not the dipstick. Tech checked it today and saId it is not loose, the o-ring's intact, and he's never seen one leak. To recap most of the the time the tech told me the cause of a P1128 error is a dirty MAF, dirty because of a failure of the air filter -- the early Boxster air filter element is notoriously a difficult item to replace and often it gets torn/damaged when installed. QuoteAnker 21 MPG is really low. I only see that with all city driving. As soon as I get out on open roads it will go up to between 25 and 27 MPG. Also, if you can't remove the oil filler cap when the engine is idling you have a bad AOS. The vacuum is way too high. The best way to test the AOS is to have a spare cap with a vacuum gauge attached. I don't remember the exact crank vacuum that you sby MarcW - Main Forum
The CEL with the P1128 error code. I'm now 1 for 3 when it comes to correctly diagnosing a CEL/engine symptom as being due to a bad MAF. Frankly and honestly I was a bit surprised the CEL came back. It was not my imagination the engine perked up from the new MAF. And since the new MAF was installed the engine has continued to show marked improvement. It wasn't just a flash in the pan. Quotegrant n/t Good question. Not being in Porsche's confidence I'm not exposed to Porsche's thinking on this subject. All I have to go by is the rule. While the rule doesn't explicitly mention circumference, which is what I believe I stated in my post above (though perhaps I could have made this clearer), of course the circumference is affected by even a 30% difference in tread depth. Quoteimtonyd As I live in Southern Ontario Canada I store my 07 Boxster during the winter months. For the past 3 years, immediately after the initial engine start in the spring, oil leaks from the Rear Main engine seal. This is an expensive repair that I do not wish to have done every year. I believe that because the engine is not being run for 3-4 months the RMS is dry and without lubrication.by MarcW - Main Forum
Seems prettty simple to me. Here's what my factory reference has to say: • When replacing a tyre on an axle, make sure that the tread depth of the new tyre does not differ from that of the other tyre by more than 30 %! There is no mention of radius, circumference, etc. Just the caution the tire tread depths can't differ by more than 30%. What is almost always the case at least in my experiby MarcW - Main Forum
Here's a pic from Porsche's site showing a "tech" measuring the tread depth and he's at the outside groove. (Click on the plus sign at the left rear tire and it takes you to the picture I mention.) Below is a link to the CPO checklist and in the section about tires and if the tread depath is less 4mm the tire must be replaced. Doesn't say anything about which grooves to measure or avoid.
