And still no CEL. After stting unused since Thursday night this AM when I went to use the car at the cold start and during the subsequent cold idle the engine felt smoother. Once under way I noitced low end response better. My usual route after a cold start at home has me often stopped at a stop light on an incline. I have to start the car moving from a dead stop up an incline and then upshift wby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteBlackbird Pedro, When tire tread depth is measured on a Pirelli Pzero 265/35 ZR20 which has 4 circumferential grooves, is the outside groove which has no tread wear indicator considered to be part of the measurement? Said another way-----Do you only consider the 3 grooves with wear indicators and if the wear on any of those 3 is under 4mm (the CPO standard), does the tire need to be replaceby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteBarryL Last month, I reported a surging issue at low speeds and low rpms, and some grinding noise my local indy heard when he was replacing the AOS. I was going to have him address these issues when he got back from vacation. But the surging seems to have lessened and I have been busy so I havent followed up. Last week I called my indy and left a message and again this week and no call backby MarcW - Main Forum
and definitely the engine is running better. Better throttle response. Better pick up when I give it some whip. Because it was still a bit warm and I drove through town and in traffic -- just to get the engine plenty hot and the MAF too which is when it seems the P1128 is more likely to appear -- the radiator fans would come on. And before the MAF change when the radiator fans came on the engineby MarcW - Main Forum
Today I worked on my Boxster. Replaced the MAF. Decided to throw a new MAF at that pesky rather persistent P1128 error. Picked up the new MAF the other day and on the way in the CEL came on and I just *know* it is that P1128 error. (Actually I chickened out and checked and it is the P1128. But just my luck if I hadn't it would have been something different.) Decided to do this at work. Gatheredby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteDanV Hey guys.... I’ve just returned from my first long drive following a repair – about 18 miles. As I arrived near my home, I notice that the front cooling system blowers were running long and hard (this rarely happens but on the hottest summer days). The temperature gauge was running a little hot which struck me as odd, because again — I’ve only seen it rise on peak summer days hby MarcW - Main Forum
Quotephatryd Thank you all! Filling in some of the details... 77Kmi, no recent service, I read codes last night and there weren't any stored. As for the 'not fully starting,' if I release the key a split second too soon when I'm starting it up, it will start but just barely -- it runs really rough and sounds terrible. I guess I'm not sure the difference between the sound of the starter and the soby MarcW - Main Forum
You have received some good replies regarding the electrical symptoms. There are at least two problems. A low battery low due to lack of use, well, proper use. Starting the engine is just half of proper use a battery gets. After each start ideally the engine should be run long enough, the car driven long enough the battery gets recharged. If the car has sat a while since last used the battery noby MarcW - Main Forum
Quotephatryd Hoping someone can help... have a knot in my stomach. I started up my '01 986 this afternoon and it fired up but did not sound like it was fully starting so I turned the key back to off before it got running. I then tried to turn the key to start it again (this has worked without issue in past) and all I get is the normal sound of the starter but the engine does not start. I removedby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteTony in Whittier I installed an in-dash switch to manually control an oil cooler fan on my 88 911. It is a simple on and off switch wired to a fuse block and a relay before the fan. The switch and fan have worked great (for 24 months or so) when the car is cool and the engine is off. But lately, when I press the switch and the engine is starting to get hot (driving in stop and go traffic), tby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteJC Costarakis So I have been changing my oil with Motul 5w-40 x-cess 8100. Reason why is because all the local PCAR Cayman racers are using it. I have read that I should use an oil with a 80,000 psi or better and a high ZDDP rating. And I have not found any technical specifications listing Motul 8100. Anything better or stick with it? You are smart to seek out tech specs on an oilby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteJMstamford,ct Looks like new O2 sensor. This is the second display of the same code in a year. I suspect the sensor is dying, but not dead. I think I will replace the two initial O2 sensors. Keep them tracking together. Thoughts? And what is the current thinking about the best source for these? I am going to buy from a reputable source and a name brand item. QuoteJohn from MN should not be any signs of wetness." Are you saying a little white residue is normal, or is that cause for concern? I have seen white residue on occasion, but never a lot - and when I topped off the resevior today, it was down only about 1.5 quarts. I also ordered a new cap that should be here by Thursday. QuoteMikenOH The Penske dealership near Cleveland sent out an email about "big" discounts on 2017 models, one of which was a Cayman S model. Gorgeous car--white/grey or blue interior, 20" wheels, PDK and a lot of other stuff with a sticker of $88k knocked down to $84K. Not exactly blowing them out the door, as they say. As nice as the 718 CS is supposed to be, $80K+ for a 1 year old model seemby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteJohn from MN obviously that has to be addressed. Which is fairly odd because I have no fluid on the garage floor. Also, I had driven it the previous day and put over 100 miles on - and the temp was consistent with where it always runs - and the light never came on. The light only flashed when I first started it up yesterday. The coolant tank is very low, nearly empty. I did check theby MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteJohn from MN flashing today and the reserve tank is quite low. The dealer is closed and won't open until Monday - but it's like 90 degrees today and 83 tomorrow (which in MN in Sept is super awesome). Can I just go up the local Napa and get some coolant? And if so, what is the recommended brand/type and it's a 50:50 mix, right? There is a concern of mixing the "wrong" anti-freezes and tby MarcW - Main Forum
Picked up the car Friday morning before work. Had the car in for new front brakes. Brake and clutch fluid flush and bleed. Oil/filter service. New cabin air filter. Tech said the cabin filter really needed changing. I bet. The engine air filter was full of trash and the pleats of filter paper full of mostly black dust, rubber dust would be my guess. My Boxster has been the best car ever and honestly everything I thought it would be given the name Porsche on the car. The car is still a very good car and gives every indication -- f/x -- of running forever. Believe it or not I still get a thrill every time I get in the car. Even though I'm using the Turbo for my work commute while the Boxster is in the shop I look forward to getting the Boxsby MarcW - Main Forum
Time for the Boxster's 315K mile oil/filter service. Brake wear warning light has been coming on now every once in a while for a while. Dropped the car off this AM and asked the brakes be done. The front brakes. These were done at around 276K miles -- SM looked it up for me on the service department computer -- so that works out to around 51K miles of brake life. Sorry. I misread your post. You can disconnect the rear trunk lid light just to be sure. i've never heard of this being the cause of a dead battery but I know the techs pop the front trunk lid light out and disconnect it first thing many times when I bring my cars in for service. Be sure you have no parasitic electrical loads in the car. I'm thinking of a phone charger plugged in. I "killed" myby MarcW - Main Forum
No mystery. Do not leave the key in the ignition. Turn the ignition off and remove the key and it is best to then lock the car. This puts the car's electronics into their lowest power state the soonest. The security system consumes a bit of power but because it is active when the car is otherwises inactive it is designed to use little power. I've left my Boxster parked for up to just short of 4 wby MarcW - Main Forum
Quotejohnstof I know there are a lot of posts about the problematic ignition switch. Unfortunately, I have not found one that addresses my particular issue. My switch started acting up about a week ago. The key was difficult to turn and when fully turned clockwise to start the car it seemed to stick there. Car was running but no lights nor wipers. So I had to turn the key very, very slightlyby MarcW - Main Forum
The CEL went dark because the DME didn't detect the error condition again after so many engine warm up cycles. This is just another sign the error condition is intermittent. I've got no more news on my P1128. It came back on a milder day just after I thought it was only a hot day only problem. It hasn't come back in a while and I've done nothing different. Quotemarty I've made the re-set and it works as before. However, half way up it makes a slight noise, like it's sticking or something is catching. Do I aim my spanners at the motor, or the glass lift mechanism...? Once the panel is off my WAG is you'll find the glass lift mechanism bad. regions of WA state. Denver CO and other areas of CO also have emissions testing and will fail if any of the factory installed emissions equipment is not functioning properly. At work and it is too noisy to get much out of the clip. This may be of some value: My 2002 Boxster manifested low volume rumble sound shortly after cold start. This at around 172K miles. Because the noise was not very loud it was impossible for me to know where exactly it was coming from and fearing the worse I suspected from inside the engine. obtaining any and all codes the Porsche diagnostic system is capable of then there were no codes logged. This suggests some kind of a software "glitch". If this is the case the next time it happens try turning off the car for a bit. QuoteJoeU ontheriver in VA I have a 2014 Boxster S, PDK with Sport Crono option. In the last month twice when I put the car into Sport mode the PDK continued to operate in normal mode. It would upshift etc. in the normal mode all the way to 7th at low speeds instead of holding at 6th. After 5-10 minutes of driving the car returned to operating in sport mode I think. The long term/short term fuel trims were even "worse" than before. This time LTFTs 1 and 2 were -12.5% and -8.6%. STFTs 1 and 2 were -2.3% and -2.3%. The DME was still trying to remove fuel even with the long term fuel trims in negative territory. I'm tempted to throw a new MAF at my car's behavior. The MAF is original but had an approx. 100K mile "break" but still it has worked for nearly 200by MarcW - Main Forum
QuoteBarryL After performing the E-GAS Calibration, seemed like the car ran smoother and shuttering was reduced somewhat. It is hard to describe the shuttering/hesitation...but at low speeds accelerating and more noticeably when going up an incline, the hesitation, shuttering seems to fluctulate, but the real shuttering occurs when I go over a roughness in the road or bump while accelerating, Kinby MarcW - Main Forum
