Manual transmissions are hard to find. I believe it takes a special order to the dealer. Congrats on what maybe an exceptional car. The original owner cared enough to put in a special order if my info is correct.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
My thoughts are with you, Marc. I know your parents would wish you a speedy recovery from the loss. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I lurked without posting, or posting very little, for many years before actually buying my Boxster. Once registered, your computer remembers you and logs you on even for a short look at what's happening. Needless to say, I learned a lot about topics such as RMS and IMS in my visits.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

So very sorry to hear. Also about the job searching. That just adds to the load. Best wishes. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
When I was looking for my Boxster, I quickly realized that KBB and Edmunds were useless. The only way to go is to use autotrader.com and set the filters up so that the options you want are shown, and then keep track of what actually sells.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Quotefrogster QuoteJackintheBoxster…the Omega Speedmaster Pro, which was the watch they wore when they faked the Moon landing. from a technical (and very pedantic) standpoint, the astronauts weren't wearing speedmaster professionals when they landed on the moon as the watch was only called speedmaster at that time. Funny you should bring this up, as I'm now planning to buy my second Speedmaster Pro. My current Speedmaster Pro is a pre-moonwatch version I bought in 1965 in Zurich. It no longer functions the way it should, and I'm not going to throw money at it to get it restored. It has about 2000 flying hours on it, and I feel good when I wear it. The attachment of pilots to watches is well known, and iby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I tracked down my problem with a voltmeter directly across the battery terminals when it was misbehaving.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I remember it's Meridith in Atlanta that has a similar car.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Please keep us informed. I have a similar Boxster and have had no problems so far. The car is out of warranty, but hopefully they will replace that valve at no cost when I have the oil changed next April when my car comes out of hibernation as long as there is a recall on it. Some years ago I had a Pontiac van that would have an intermittent starting problem. It turned out to be an intermittent internal connection in the battery. Sadly, the only way to rule out the battery is to replace it with a new one.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
As an owner of a 2008 Corvette, I'm not surprised at your report, though I haven't been following the forum lately. It always takes GM a couple of years (at least) to get things right. The point of my original comment is that I think that we are now at a critical point for Porsche owners. The people on this board are not average Boxster owners. The true value of the 9A1 engine is not appreciaby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
With the past record of new Porsche engine reliability and possible lack of low end torque with a turbo 4, I meant looking at a Boxster with the upcoming power plant.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I looked long and hard to find my 987.2. I may buy another Boxster someday, but I am in no hurry. I would suggest anyone without the 9A1 engine do some serious thinking about selling their current vehicle and going after a 987.2 or later car until this whole thing settles out.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
In addition to the Boxster, I have a 2008 Corvette coupe with the Z51 performance package and manual transmission. I've had no problems with dealer service. Not every Chevy dealer is qualified, to service the Corvette. I belong to a local Corvette club and there would certainly be immediate damage to a dealer's reputation if anything like occurred.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Seriously, there are times when a person has to go fast with a plate attached. I purchased my Boxster in Scottsdale and drove it home to Minneapolis. The car was under warranty and I took it up to 130 on a 2 lane road in the desert on an Indian reservation just to test it out. That is one of the few occasions that come to mind where a high speed run with a plate attached is necessary.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Just wanted to give the data for anyone keeping track.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I had a cable break while the car was still under warranty. There was basically no shift pattern. I reported it on the board, and nobody had heard of it happening before. I wouldn't worry about it happening again.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Quite a kick reading my post from October 2012. The 9A1 engine introduced in 2009 corrected a bunch of issues, not just the IMS, which caused engine failure.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
A couple of points I picked up from forums in my BMW Z3 days which might apply here. The plug is purposely designed to self destruct if over tightened to avoid stripping threads in the pan. The right way to tighten the plug is by feel. There is a compression washer which will slowly compress as the plug is tightened. When it stops compressing, it's time to stop tightening the plug. A quick google shows that Lujack Porsche is in Davenport Iowa, and proudly advertises that they are the only Porsche dealer in Iowa. I would guess that's a big part of the problem.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Your car is at the point where there is a strong likelihood that you will be putting money into it on a regular basis. I personally wouldn't want to take a long cross country trip far from Porsche dealer service with your car after it has been fixed, but that's your call. As for a new Boxster, there is a lot to be said in favor of that before they change over from the 9A1 engine with a proven rby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I would guess there would be stored error codes. I would take it to the dealer unless you have a trusted independent.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
As far as I can tell with the computer generated pseudo dipstick, my oil consumption is zero. Ordinarily one doesn't report good news, but I thought I would throw that out.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
You're right. I don't get out much anymore, just hang around here reasonably confident any real issue will surface here sooner or later. I did a lot of internet searching before purchasing my Boxster since I wanted to know what I might run into keeping the car out of warranty. Interestingly the only major problem (under warranty, thankfully) was a broken shift linkage cable which seems to be aby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
This whole thread is as good a summary of the IMS issue as I have seen. What's missing is a discussion of failure possibility in 986 and early 987 engines not due to IMS issues. We too often regard ourselves as typical Porsche owners, but Pedro's comments bring us back to reality. We're probably a very small enthusiast subset of Boxster owners. Some of you may remember that last April I inquired about a coolant leakage issue on my car just before it went out of warranty. The advise was to replace the coolant cap and check coolant level periodically. I am happy to report that after I installed the new cap provided by the dealer that there is no noticeable drop in coolant level after 1300 miles. Thanks all for the help. I like to gamble when I have a feeling for the odds and the rewards are great. Thus, my 987.2 out of warranty is my kind of gamble. I have a good feeling for the odds by hanging out here. I wonder where you might find such a forum for the Panamera?by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The two main factors at play here are government regulation and changes in society, as you point out. Think of how ugly the MGB became when it had to be fitted with huge rubber bumpers. As for changes in society, it really strikes me as odd that there is a waiting list for the Macan. We have people in Florida and California that can't wait to get their hands on a SUV that will never see anythiby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
