This is just to hopefully save someone from the frustration I just went through for the last hour and a half. In short, one should just ignore the manual bit about flashing daylight running lights in the setup for Homelink for garage door openers. Maybe it's my opener, a new Liftmaster, but I was never able to see the flashing DRL signal that the car had learned the transmitter code. After ignby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
When I unscrewed the cap today, with the engine completely cold after sitting for a couple of days, there was the slightest hiss indicating a pressure equalization. I therefore doubt the cap is leaking. I will mention the issue when I bring the car in to the dealer and request that they inspect the cooling system carefully especially the water pump seals.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I'm getting the car ready to drive. We're supposed to have thunderstorms here tomorrow which should take care of the salt on the roads. I'm taking the car in to the dealer a week from Monday for the major 4 year 40K mile check. The Boxster has 21K on it now. This will be an important check, because the warranty expires on April 28. I topped the coolant up last May after driving back from Ariby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Two thirds the number of pistons. Two thirds the number of connecting rods. Two thirds the number of associated bearings. I haven't heard of that many problems associated with modern turbos, but I confess I haven't spent a lot of time looking.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
My first experience with Porsche was as a fan watching the RSK Spyder driven by the Rodriguez brothers and Roger Penske at Meadowdale Raceway west of Chicago in the late 1950's. I was smitten, and never had a problem with the way the cars sounded. I would be much more concerned about possible reliability problems. I was an occasional lurker on PPBB for years and read enough about engine probby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I have yet to try out the Universal Audio Interface installed on the Boxster I bought last April. The warranty expires at the end of the month, so I'd better check it out. I have an order going in to Amazon, and I'm wondering if I can add the necessary cable to the order.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I would definitely tell them to leave the clutch alone. If there is a problem that might get worse, you can deal with it later. The only "wear and tear" part should be the clutch surface and that would show up as slipping. I'm not satisfied that your electrical problem is fixed. Your car sat outside in cold temperatures during the snow storm, and you started it no problem. You might have anby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Wife and I are off to Hawaii (Big Island) for a week starting tomorrow morning. The winter here in Minneapolis is as bad as any I have ever seen, though I didn't realize how bad it was going to be when I made reservations last December. My daughter just returned from the same location, and convinced us to upgrade to a convertible rental car. It wasn't a hard decision to make.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I've given this a bit more thought. Mer is correct. The responsibility is Volvo's, whether they admit it or not. If this car is involved in an accident in the future I just hope a lawyer gets involved who is smart enough to investigate the history of the car. Volvo could be hit with a big judgment if it can be shown they were aware of the problem.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
You might think of contacting your US House representative and use this reference as backup. Explain that the NHTSB can collect reports, but in cases such as yours where there is a rare but known defect which leaves no trace of evidence that there is no mechanism to remove the car from service.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I would tell the story to an investigative reporter, TV or print. Stress that this car needs to be taken off the road because it is a hazard to public safety. If Volvo buys the car back and sells it to someone else, it would only be a matter of time before there is an accident resulting is possible injury or death to an innocent party.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I saw the news out of Atlanta on the TV this morning and I immediately thought of you. Thanks for the report. Even winter tires are no good on ice, and from the reports that seems to be the major issue. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The targa is a 2008 Corvette coupe. The coupe is in fact a targa with a removable roof panel. I have not capitalized "targa" so as not to confuse the issue. The roadster is the Boxster, of course. Other roadsters I have owned are the BMW Z3 and my first car, an MGTD. Nothing compares with the open feeling of a roadster. It's strictly a personal opinion, but I really don't see the point of aby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I was very interested in what he had to say regarding the new electrically assisted steering. After reading, I just had to put on my coat and go out to the garage and sit in the Boxster for a few minutes. More snow today. Steveby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

If there were a change in the throttle opening at around 4000 RPM, I would expect to see a kink in the curve, a slope change. The curve published in the sales brochure looks fairly smooth.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

The staff at C&D prefer the Boxster to the 911. There have been comments in other articles that reinforce this. This is not the way Porsche would have us think. I was an observer of the Porsche scene, primarily through PPBB for many years before I actually became a Porsche owner. Now, after reading several issues of Panorama and attending a 50th anniversary of the 911 event at the Porscheby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
The latest issue of Car and Driver has been sitting on the table for a couple of days now. I've been to busy to even look at it. I just opened it up and looked at their annual "10 Best" article. The Boxster/Cayman is the winner hands down. One noteworth quote: "If you're looking for more sports-car fun beyond the Boxstert/Cayman, you're only doing it to be noticed".by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum

First of all, I love this car. Originally I thought I might take it out in the winter on nice days, but my wife said no way! She also loves the car. We have a 2008 Corvette and a Honda Pilot, so we'll be down to one car for the winter. It works because my wife's office is 3 miles from home and I'm retired so she's happy to let me drive her to work and pick her up. They salted the roads hereby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
If you haven't heard of it, Pedro, then it really is weird. I have to say the Porsche dealer handled it as just a routine matter. I'm just very glad it happened where it did and when it did. There has been a lot of discussion on the board in the past about extended warranties, but given the lack of any problem reports on the engine in the 987.2, I'm going to go without a warranty when the factby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Just a week ago I encountered a problem I haven't seen mentioned on the board. I was going to meet my wife for dinner, and about a block away from the restaurant there was a loud CLUNK as I shifted from first to second. As I let the clutch up, the car behaved as if it were in neutral. I depressed the clutch again and found that the shift pattern was gone. I could move the shift lever easily fby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Nobody in this fun thread answered your question regarding the 987.2. It's the version MY2009 and later which has a completely new engine design (no IMS).by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
I completely agree, Bruce. I would add that the members of this forum represent a small subset of Porsche customers. I thank PPBB and now Pedro's Board for educating me on the possibilities of engine failure on 986 and early 987 Boxsters. I waited until I could buy a car with the new engine before making a purchase. There have been reports of failures unrelated to IMS on the earlier motors, sby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Pedro, You didn't mention if the remanufactured engine that you would provide would have a new IMS bearing and DOF. If so, that would be really no worries and would substantially add to the resale value of the car.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
This might be a good time to ask if there are any differences between the MY 2013 and 2014 cars.by SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
Great photos. This year makes a big difference for me as well. A year ago I was without a Boxster. My wife and I were vacationing in Bruges, Belgium when a 981 drove by. My wife ran down the narrow street to get a better look while she was asking "What is that car?" The Porsche, silver with top down, pulled into a parking spot and she got a good chance to admire the car and speak with the owby SteveJ (2010 987 base, manual trans) - Main Forum
