If you can give up the back seat, Miata's are pretty solid cars right out of the box. The family just added a new Subaru Outback as the bad weather car to the stable, but it is not a convertible. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
You might check the following: -major vacuum leak(intake, aos, oil filler cap, etc.) -fuel pump fuse, along with replacement of the filter if it has not been done in 30k, check fuel pressures(rest/running) -ignition switch(doubt it is this, but weirder things have happened when they go) regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
The earlier versions seemed to be worse then the later, but It has been my experience that they have a limited life and the warning signs are not totally transparent(partially due to location). If you have that many miles on it, then good for you. Personally, it is not worth risking the family getting stuck out here where service is not easy. In my view, the life of these coolant tanks dependsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Thought I might tackle this on the weekend, or there abouts. Was not looking forward to removing the hardtop and putting the top in "service position" , but there is no time like the present. The tank has 10 years and almost 60k on it which is enough service life out of it for me to replace it with the newer version(see pic). We are probably lucky to get what we have out of the old tank. You might see if any of the original hardware is lying around there. I find it usually gets stuck in any number of places before hitting the pavement. Otherwise, you might check any local suppliers. It's worth checking the drive train mounts on the car. We used to have this issue until I changed them out a while back. If your buying the hardware oem, you might try a discounting dealer (Suncoast,by por911(bc) - Main Forum
I've had my fair share of turning wrenches, so I do all of the work on our families cars(sans tires & alignments). I use only factory Porsche parts and torque pretty much everything to factory spec(aviation certed torque wrenches). For us, it keeps the cars to the standards we would like without fuss or issue. We tend to like the cars kept to a very high standard which would be tough througby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I don't know where you are, but here in the PNW , I find the combo of salt air and fur needles can do a number on the chassis of your car. It is probably worth washing and waxing the car a bit more often. The debris seems to fill up in the rear drains a bit more often then I would like. Easy to clean out while your flushing the brake fluid, som not really a big deal. The cover will definitelyby por911(bc) - Main Forum
You might watch your speed coming up, the cops are especially bad in through Bellingham/Ferndale. If your wanting winter, or a more colder climate minded tire, you might check out True-Line in Bellevue. Best of luck with the new ride, many happy and safe miles to you. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I had, or found a similar experience with our families cars. I've used Castrol Syntec(10w-40, ACEA performance rated) for a few years now with great results. I was having too much rough running, coking issues, and oil consumption with the M1. It was also getting hard to find the ACEA performance rated M1. Whereas, the Castrol Syntec is easy to find around us and costs less. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
You've got a ZF tip gearbox on a base MY00. If you look at the side trans, I forget which one, there is the POrsche indicators on it with a ZF stamping. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I personally like either, Pentosin, or the VW/Audi AG factory product (pt#G052162A2) for the ZF manufactured transmissions. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
OK, I would do the following: 1) clean sensor and connector ends 2) clean grounds at firewall and fuse box 3) check harness for mouse damage, IE chewing through protective shielding I love Audi's, but, there attention to detail when it comes to electronics leaves something to be desired. My guess is, there is a bad ground , and/or higher then normal resistance(IE dirt/debris, pinch, mouse damby por911(bc) - Main Forum
The car still needs an alignment, but that will be done in a couple days. Lets get down to the brass tax, the tires have an increased comfort level over the PS2's, reduced noise level, and seemingly better road feel which is pleasantly surprising. Having said that, these are not track, or high speed tires, IE driving the car at 9/10ths of it's ability. For the occasional spirited drive and commby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Yes, support the car from the jack points and let the suspension hang. Otherwise, you'll alter the settings. Don't quote me, but I believe the torque spec for the cross members was 48 ft lbs. It is also worth checking to see if the car is level, so the amount of fluid in the gearbox is correct. The base gearbox gets set a a certain amount (11mm) below the fill port. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
It was time to attack the car again. It amazes me how much debris fills up in the drains for these cars. Those out there that have not done it in a while, might consider doing so in the near future. The brake fluid was not bad, but you can definitely feel the difference with the new/fresh fluid in there. I have to hand it to Tirerack, quick delivery. It will be interesting how these Contiby por911(bc) - Main Forum
You might check the fuel injector o-ring seals for leaks. They can cause a whole host of gremlin CEL's that are tough to trace down. I replaced both the upper and lower on our 01 base at 42k, and could immediately tell the difference. It is probably worth looking at the fuel filter(change every 30k) and AOS(change every 60k). You can always ohm out the MAF to see if it is in spec. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Thought about it, but the way the car gets driven(spring and fall), it is the lower temps that have been a concern. It gets very low miles annually due to it being a pleasure vehicle and others get poor weather duty. If it was a main driver, then yes, I would have just got another set of rims as there are loads around. Wear is not an issue either as we've gotten almost 30k out of our current seby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I suspect these tires will be fine for us. The car is not driven agressively, or much on an annual basis(1-2k or less a year). It would be nice to drive in temps under 50 or 60 degrees and have the tires not be as hard as marbles. In the PNW, it is like that a lot. The PS2's with age and miles on them are getting very loud and are tending to flat spot at a greater rate of frequency. Here, it tby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Thanks though. Ordered a set of Conti Extreme Contact DWS All Seasons, so , we'll see how it goes. They are about $200 less then the Michelins and get better feedback. I'll post a review after we get some miles on them. regardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Since the temps year round in the PNW are mildly cooler, I thought of going to all seasons this time round. There is so much of the year where the PS2's are as hard as marbles here. I was looking at the new Conti DMS A/S and the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. Does anybody here have experience with either of these. I had put a set of the Michelins on my unk's old A4 and thought well of them, but on thby por911(bc) - Main Forum
Just finished changing the gearbox oil. I'm getting slower in my old age, things seemed to be dragging on. The old oil was in there for a tade less then 30k and you could notice the difference in shifting afterwards. Sorry for the tilted pic, I was lying on my fat old belly. Getting the car positioned to remove the cross braces was mildly taxing. Cross members removed and cleaned afterwardsby por911(bc) - Main Forum
I cross the boarder, probably more then once a month and the wait times depend greatly on how/when one travels across. The questioning seems to vary greatly. Since I'm probably a statistical anomaly(disabled), my experiences might be skewed but they like explanations for what's in front of them, or things get tense/terse quickly. The best situation, is seemingly to cross on "off" times when theby por911(bc) - Main Forum
