This must be the information that was to come about Pedro's solution. If I read it correctly, it offers a means to add lubrication for the 987 IMS (that is not replaceable w/o MAJOR engine work). What is involved in doing this? Time, cost, required expertise at an indie shop? Pedro, I assume that you will post this on your garage site. Thanks, Bobby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Jeff, if you are on your 4th Boxster, then maybe you haven't owned one long enough for the fabric top to start looking old. I had my first Boxster for 10 years and treated the top with the Porsche recommended stuff (I still haven't gone with the crowd to ragtop) every other summer. When I traded it in the salesman commented on the condition of the top. It looked close to new. Admittedly, thatby Bobtesa - Main Forum
I wouldn't worry about what others think, do what is right - two hands are always better than one. Certainly for the track. I haven't seen too many F1, NASCAR, or other racers using the 1-handed hi method. There is no problem using that method as long as NOTHING BAD HAPPENS. How much less control do you have with one hand hi during a front tire blow out? Doing an emergency avoidance move?by Bobtesa - Main Forum
If I understand this correctly, "old" bolts with previous specs of 96 pounds should now be 100 pounds. Why the change? And, "new" bolts should be 118 pounds. It sounds as if the new bolts are different than the old bolts. So they can take more torque? But, what does it mean to have different torque for essentially the same car and wheels? It sounds like it has something to do with the compoby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Using rental cars over the years while traveling, I have noticed the steady improvements. I have rented a Ford Focus a few times and it is fine for a small car. Interesting op-ed in the WSJ this a.m. about how we will soon be seeing/driving GM cars made in China. I wonder if they will ever make a Corvette in China for import to the US? Will Porsche make a Boxster in China and ship it to the Uby Bobtesa - Main Forum
If 4 billion beats per life time is the limit, and gets you to 108, then every time I turn the key and feel my heart rate rise a little, I am shortening my life span. But it's quality, not quantity, so I'll keep turning the key.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
Good guess, my recollection is that the road was $2.4 billion. And it does look like it - nice road. It started with a 55 mph limit which was a joke because it is not highly used and visibility is excellent everywhere. The limit is now 65, but it could easily be 75. For sure, no way will it every be a high speed road.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
This link (hope it works) in the Washington Post this a.m. proposes making a local (to me) toll road in Maryland into an autobahn. Nice logic, good idea, my heart is racing.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
I washed my car a few days ago only to find, no surprise, that it was painted with pollen a day or two later. I didn't want to wash it again (a rather detailed, no pun intended, ritual for me), so I used a quick detailer only to end up if a clean car that had a green tinged roof. Hmmm, what do do? I thought of using my lint roller which works great on the top, but decided to try vacuuming it oby Bobtesa - Main Forum
And, for a guy who very nicely integrates how avoiding tickets is in some ways conducive to safe driving, notice how often he has NO hands on the steering wheel (while driving on wet roads!). Sure, I do that too on occasion, but I don't represent C&D.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
Does anyone have any idea what the upholsterer sprayed onto the leather seats? I use Lexol cleaner and treatment, but they didn't "wash" the seats, they just used a liquid to get them back to snuff.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
I also moved up the hp range going from a 1999 at 200 hp to a 2008S at 300 hp. It adds a certain fun factor. With the extra power though, I wish it could have remained a 5-speed. My 1999 with less power and fewer gears was a bit more engaging (for those of us who like that sort of thing).by Bobtesa - Main Forum
Ditto what Roger said about road surface quality. I have PASM in my 2008 and had MO30 in my 1999. I don't know what the 981 options are. PASM allows the driver two settings, one for better handling and one for cruising or on rough roads. MO30 was built into the suspension and could not be altered (my wife hated it she called it the 'bumpy option"). I'd suggest two things. 1, if you are notby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Bruce, Very nice! Thanks for the pics. My guess is that most people here have seen Ruby Red. But, if not and they want to compare it with Guards Red (no cost option, so common red) they can look at your car's color compared with the red brake calipers. Bruce, if it is not too much trouble, if you post a pick of just 1 panel with the wheel in the pic so the calipers are larger then in your picby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Right, I don't think the tpms is accurate enough. Mine seems to be off by 2-3 pounds. In most cars the tpms, required now by law, serves to let you know when the pressure is too low for safety. So, as in my Subaru, a red warning light comes on if the pressure goes too far below some minimum value. But, with my Boxster I want to be as accurate as possible. It may be that these systems can beby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Had new tires put on with TPMS and balancing. Now it seems penny wise and pound foolish not to have a very good tire pressure gauge. I was happy with my Porsche digital gauge, but lost it and now have a gauge from a local auto store, but I am not convinced that it is all that accurate. I'd appreciate suggestions about types of gauges and makers that folks have had good experience with. I canby Bobtesa - Main Forum
"As the 2006-08 3rd generation IMS design has seemingly been doing lots better than the prior generations, the odds seem better at this time remembering that it was only later did we realize that there were statistically frequent problems with the first two generations." While I wish everyone with pre-06 Boxsters (I had a 1999 for 10 years) good odds with their IMSs, hopefully the "fix" that Porby Bobtesa - Main Forum
This is related to the recent discussion about Jake's (LN's?) development of a non-bearing replacement for an IMS. From what I understand pre-2006 engines can have either of LNs replacement IMS (bearing or non-bearing model) done along with a clutch change or as preventive maintenance for a reasonable cost. It sounds very reasonable if you do in fact need to replace a clutch. On the other hanby Bobtesa - Main Forum
I have found the same thing - waving is more effective than a flash. And I also think this is due to owners unknowledgable about historic customs. I'm not sure how this relates, but it does somehow to Porsche putting "Porsche" on the rear of every model. I don't have a problem with Porsche making SUVs, sedans, etc., as long at it keeps the company in business and they keep making cars thatby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Ditto. I was, still am, disappointed with the horn in my 08 which seems to have a similar design. With both hands on the wheel, it requires one hand to move from the perimeter to the center rather than just pressing a thumb. Worse if your hand has to move from the shifter to the horn. When first driving the car 4 years ago I was sure the horn worked with the chrome extensions where my thumb cby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Personally, I am looking forward to driving a Google self-driving Boxster. The excitement of taking a clover leaf at the recommended speed; seeing my pdk tranny automatically shift every time with stunning precision at 2,500; never changing lanes; and enjoying my cd player like never before because there is nothing else to do. Hmmm. Maybe I'll take the bus.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
I asked for advice a few days ago about tire choices. I made a selection, Michelin Super Sport, thanks for the input. In another thread, Steve asked about tpms, I had forgotten about that, thanks. I guess the only thing left to consider is the need/or not, for a wheel alignment. I have had my 08 Boxster for 4 years, put on 19K miles, and the car still tracks like new. I know this has been discussed many times, but it's more relevant when one (me now) is actually making a decision and purchase that will last 4-5 years. My shop recommends Michelin first, then Continental, then Sumatomo tires. I looked at tire rack (I'll buy there) and there is a considerable price difference between Mich P2 (about 1,500), Mich Super Sport(1,100) and Continental Extreme Contactby Bobtesa - Main Forum
My Boxster is under a carport and I drive it about every 2-3 days throughout the winter, not a daily driver so only on dry pavement days. This means that I have to wash it occasionally in cold weather. I have always had proper rubber boots, pants and top, but my hands get pretty cold. My wife and I snorkel (not divers), and we did some cold water snorkeling about two years ago. For this we boby Bobtesa - Main Forum
I'll stick with the only Porsche that has the "roof or no roof" as standard.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
There have been plenty of discussions here about various aspect of oils for Porsches. I'm not trying to open a Pandora's box again, but looking for an answer to a simple question. (Is that possible about oil?) Folks have posted lists of acceptable oils by manufactures, etc, but I can remember it all. Is Motul an ok oil to use in a Boxster? I hope it's a simple yes or no. Thanksby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Good pics for comparison. I can't measure anything form them, but a look-see seems to show that the trunk opening and lid on the 981 are more "tear dropped" then the 987. That means, without the clamshell there could actually be more space in the 981 trunk, but with size of the opening reduced it still will not accommodate a full set of clubs. I think that I could put my whole carry bag with lby Bobtesa - Main Forum
Nice wheels. It's a new car, so I don't imagine there would be problems with Porsche factory wheels unless they really screwed up. Did you get these after market for a second set of tires for the winter? If not, what did you do with the original wheels? Maybe I missed something in your post or an earlier post.by Bobtesa - Main Forum
