1997 Boxster. Fixed the honking horn problem I posted about previously. Today when I started the car I noticed the right side high beam headlight was on. Checked my light switch and it was in the off position. No blue indicator lamp on the cluster gauge Played around with the light switch and the head light stayed on. Ran some errands and the head light is behaving. What gives? Second issue. Seby patrick - Main Forum
QuoteBoxsterBob - San Carlos I traded in my '99 with 140k miles and picked up a '14 S with 10k miles. Lovin' every minute! Was this the infamous 99 blue Boxster used as a get away car in Bay Area robberies?by patrick - Main Forum
Quotejlegelis We live in blessed times if you are a fan of internal combustion, either with or without forced induction. With Britain, France, and many other countries and and major carmakers vowing to ban or shift completely to zero-emissions cars by 2040 or before, it won't be long before we'll need to explain to our grand kids what a 'gas tank' was, while paying extra for insurance if I wanby patrick - Main Forum
The 928 did not have a long run either and it was an eight cylinder. The 924/944 actually had a long run from 1975-1988 with 150,000 units sold . The 914-6 was actually a better short track car then it's sibling the 911 was at the time. It was expensive to produce and too close in price to the 911. As someone pointed out the 912 was an entry level and gap car for Porsche and not intended to be aby patrick - Main Forum
Well we had a whole list of characters back then, "The Trent", Cecil I think had the best stories. There were also cool road trip stories back then as well.by patrick - Main Forum
Marc, You live in the same area as I do. The roads are not swept or maintained. I also have three cars with cracked windshields too from rock damage from the deteriorating roads.. I can't get more than 3-5,000 on a set of rear tires because my car is a nail magnet. Just put on another set a few weeks ago Only got 2,000 miles out of the previous set. Hi folks. Haven't posted here in ages. Good to see many of the old names still on the board. Still driving my silver/red 97 Boxster. Hard to believe that I will have owned it for 20 years as of next week. It has developed a strange problem. The horn goes off when I brake especially if I brake hard to a stop. I also noticed that the horn will go off if I lightly touch the center of the steering wby patrick - Main Forum

QuoteTony in Whittier For a used one. Not that far from you. I bet they offer some sort of warranty on the purchase. Thanks Tony. I'll check them out.by patrick - Main Forum
QuoteLawdevil & CURVN8R Just wondering, if a used 5 speed is that much cheaper, is it practical to switch a Tip car to a manual tranny? I looked into putting a 5 speed in my car. Dealer said the wiring harness, steering wheel, instrument cluster, electronics, ECU all different. It is possible but not practical. The Tip is a totally different animalby patrick - Main Forum
QuoteTrygve (Oakland, CA) Pedro is right on. I don't know about Tiptronics, but a used manual 5-speed can be had for $700-$800. If you don't have the inclination / friends / tools + information to swap it at home, it should only be a few hours labor for a mechanic, so I would think you'd be out less than $2000 at most. So I'd say find a low mileage used transmission and have someone throw it in,by patrick - Main Forum
Quote986rgt Sounds like you got a very rare failure, happens to many car makes. To put the blame on Porsche for this failure is unfair I would say, not their fault something in the outsourced transmission failed. As you said, the Tiptronics have a reputation for being bulletproof, so I say follow Pedros advice, source a used unit from a dismantler. Not sure how good of a shade tree mechanic you aby patrick - Main Forum
QuotePedro (Weston, FL) ... los miles tranny from a reputable source such as Parts Heaven, Oklahoma Foreign or LA Dismantlers. They will sell you the transmission with a 30 or 60 day warranty. Just put a new filter and fresh fluid (full synthetic) and you should be ready to go for not much dough. Happy Boxstering Pedro Thanks Pedro. Geez I wish I lived near you. Have not been here in a while.Still have my 1997 Boxster that I ordered in January 1997 and took delivery of in August 1997. My Tiptronic which I thought was pretty bullet proof started slipping between 3rd to 4th and 4th to 5th gears at 63K. Could see the tach rise and feel lack of power and slipping.. Continued to get worse as it started to really slip and chatter between shifts. Took it to tby patrick - Main Forum

I have not heard a newer Bose system in a car recently and I think an expensive sound system in an environment like an open cabin sports car with a motor behind the seat like a Boxster is a challenge anyway. The Bose option is pretty expensive IMO. My 1993 Mercedes S class had the Bose upgrade option with a ridiculous number of speakers and amp power for a car. Could make a track car if the right person with skills could pick it up at close to that price.by patrick - Main Forum
I sent this to my service adviser. He was not aware that Porsche had settled an IMS lawsuit. The customer who had the IMS fail in his 550 SE was going to replace the motor out of his own pocket. Hopefully, he is covered now under this settlement.by patrick - Main Forum
Right after posting the pretty pictures of your car. If you are concerned about frame damage check to see if the body shop you are considering uses Celette jigs. Cook's Collision in Dublin, CA works on severely damaged high end cars like Porsche Turbos and Vipers and uses Celette. The car is set in a jig and the frame is realigned and rebuilt on the jig back to factory specifications. The shop sby patrick - Main Forum
My neighbor got one of the first 996 cars from the factory in the summer of 1998. When it arrived at the port, the RMS was leaking and it was held. The car had 17 miles on it and was two weeks old. The car was delayed for weeks until Porsche installed a new motor at the port and released it. My neighbor who also owned a 1997 993 was very concerned about being the first to own one of the new wateby patrick - Main Forum

A manufacturing defect is when something is produced or assembled in the factory outside of specifications or tolerances during the manufacturing process. The designs in the shaft covers and RMS led to the grease packed IMS bearing becoming contaminated by oil and other liquids that washed out the grease packed in the race causing the bearing to overheat and fail under some circumstances which arby patrick - Main Forum

In the case of the 550SE in the shop it was not a supposed IMS failure. Motor failure was diagnosed by the Master Tech and attributed to the IMS. I'll find out today if the settlement covers a new motor for the owner from Porsche and how much he will be out of pocket. The Tech remark about driving the car was not about that particular car, the 550SE, the Tech's point was it is much better to drby patrick - Main Forum
Guess I've been off the board for a long time. Porsche is finally settling IMS claims even after warranty? I pick up my car tomorrow and will ask who is going to foot the bill. Didn't that Dennis guy from Pa have a 550SE that went through two IMS failures? Wonder if the settlement is retroactive.by patrick - Main Forum
Dropped my car off at the dealer for its 60,000 service today. There was a 2004 550 SE with 14,000 miles and the owner was told the bad news, the IMS failed. The motor is toast. My mechanic and service adviser both told me that these cars need to be driven on a regular basis. Probably not a good day for that owner as it is well out of warranty and he is on his own with the blown motor to the tuby patrick - Main Forum
I don't know how solid a Porsche Boxster is with nearly 200,000 miles on the suspension and other mechanical parts. I've seen the endless money pit that MarcW has with his 200K Boxster and how much money he has put into that car. Major mechanical and electrical components wear out and do not last forever. The OP does not do the work himself so repairs can get expensive real fast on these cars. Iby patrick - Main Forum
