BMW, but generic question
JackintheBoxster - Sunday, 12 June, 2011, at 9:06:42 pm
My wife's BMW 3 series had trouble starting this evening -- car turned over and caught, but died on several tries, revs wouldn't stay up even if I pumped the gas. Any thoughts on why? This is a high-mileage car, just shy of 170k miles. My guess is throttle adjustment or a bad sensor, anyone have any other ideas?

Thanks.
Fuel filter or fuel pump?

I think the fuel filter was changed recently, I don't think we've ever replaced the fuel pump.
inject extra fuel.

The fuel pump has been mentioned and that's a good idea.

But I believe a bad fuel pump would have just died so I suspect a bad coolant sensor or air intake temp sensor that is signaling too high a temp over actual and the engine controller thinking the engine is warmer than it actually is is not adding enough fuel to keep the cold engine running.

Does the engien start and run ok when warmed up?

Sincerely,

MarcW.

Was a bad fuel pump, had it replaced by indie guy here in town. Thanks to all for your advice and counsel.
