Again and again, and again yesterday, I thank the fates that I have a reputable independent mechanic. Walking into the service area of a dealership, with their oh-so-elegant furnishings and oh-so-precious curated organic water dispensers is like walking down the wrong street with a wallet full of big bills hanging out of your back pocket. These are expensive cars, even used, and repairs are notby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum

Got a new plastic rear window yesterday, it's like a new car being able to see out the back. I think that when this one fogs up, I'll go ahead and get a new roof with a glass window, but that wasn't in the cards this time around. For those in the Washington area, I used Key's auto upholstery in Alexandria, very nice guy, seems to have done an excellent job, was recommended to me by Euro Importsby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
The ubiquitous relatively affordable sports cars of my youth (the 60s and 70s) -- MGs, Triumphs, Alpines, Austin Healys are all gone. Porsche and Mazda are, I think, the only companies filling that niche and if Porsche needs to build a station wagon so it can produce a Boxster/Cayman for those of us who prefer them or who are not in the luxo-911 market, I say go ahead.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Anyone dealt with this shop for replacement of plastic window in a 986?by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Well, I have to say, in fairness, that there is still little in the way of apparent competition for the Boxster. I don't mean this in the sort of blind Porsche cheerleader sense. There is nothing else out there that offers in a (relatively) affordable package a compact sportscar that handles exceptionally well and is comfortable for long trips -- with some storage space for luggage. You might be right. I was at a dealership last week and passed by a couple of new Caymans and was struck that they look like serious sports coupes, compared to the Boxster.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I think it looks better than the Boxster.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Not counting the cost -- financial and in time -- of the car flooding because of a leak you didn't see, causing the control module to freak out; the lost time when the window cracks and you have to take it in; etc., yes 50 cents day.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
It just strikes me that $1,500 for a new top is too damn much. My car is now 16 years old and shows it; I'm not complaining, I love it and I still think it's a great-driving car. However, if I can swing it, I expect I'll replace it in the next couple of years and I think that the much-cheaper option of replacing the window if I can do that will be what I do. I also have to say that although Iby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
During the repair process for a fried control unit, I had the key for my 2001 986 replaced by the dealer. It seemed to work only for some functions (front but not back trunk), then the light stopped working on it when I pressed the button (meaning, I assume a dead battery, although I'm surprised even a dealer would screw me on a battery). I am now locking and unlocking the door manually until Iby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Right, I guess I did miss that. However, having looked at the cracked window stitching and I'm going to see if I can get the window replaced again, which will be cheaper and more appropriate for a car that is more than 15 years old at the moment. I've also bought and just started using a CalCarCover (whatever), which I think you recommended, and which I hope will head off any leak problems fromby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
This is in line with what I suspect -- I haven't actually been into the shop yet. Given the age of my car, I'm not sure I'd spring for a glass window, particularly given its disadvantages. The cost of a top sounds right to me, as it happens, I've been told that the replacement top for a 911 in the same shop was $11,000. At $3,200 for a 986 top, I'd rather just start using the cover I recentlyby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I've got to replace my rear window on my 986. I did this about five or 10 years ago, as I recall it was pretty quick, about $600, is this in line with others' experience? Since this is an '01, it has a plastic window, I'm wondering what the board thinks about swapping in a glass window.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Just saw a mockup online of the 718 coupe; I have to say, I may like it better than the convertible.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Is anyone but me watching to see what the planned BMW Z5 actually emerges as? When I was shopping for my Boxster, I drove a Z3 and would have liked it had I not just driven a Boxster -- the Porsche seemed to have a better, more race-car, feel to it than the BMW, which felt like a 1960s sports car (nothing wrong with that, though). I've since seen the Z3s and Z4s trashed as not worth the money,by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Security module, replaced by a trusted indy Porsche specialist because of water damage, area 90 percent dry. Battery may be low, that was my guess.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Was by the dealer yesterday and saw a new Cayman in black. Very nice. I have no objections at all to the new versions of the 911, but they do seem to have gotten bloated. Old guy that I am, when I think of Porsches, even though I love my 986, I think of 356s and old 911 coupes first. Am I the only one who thinks the Cayman is more reminiscint of those two cars than is the current 911?by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Just had my master control unit replaced, now getting a whirring noise just behind the gas tank cap, behind the axle on the right side, when I lock the car. Any thoughts? Also some other electrical gremlins seem to have creeped in -- windows don['t partially open or close when the top is latched or unlatched, back trunk won't open even using the manual release, radio won't take the access code,by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I'm just looking for something to keep the rain out having just gone through a painful repair process because of a shorted out control unit. My next car will be a coupe.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
I want to get a cover for my 986 so that I don't have to deal with leakage anymore -- any advice would be appreciated.by JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Welcome to our group. Here is the slightly updated version of my periodic post on being on this board: 1. All things Porsche are inherently better than any other car brand. We all know that we’d rather have a clapped-out, barely running ’97 Boxster than a pristine Aston Martin or Ferrari because, well, it’s a Porsche. 2. Boxsters are really the only true Porsche, with their mid-engine, oby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
Well, on this exact topic, I think the tragedy, if there is one, in this 718 is that we won't have the stripped-down 718 many of us thought we would have a year or so ago. I can't tell from the pictures whether this car will look too gimicky or not, but some of that body sculpting reminds me of BMWs (an otherwise fine car in my opinion other than the Zs) and how difficult they bodywork looked toby JackintheBoxster - Main Forum
